ULAN BATOR, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — At a construction site near Green Lake in Mongolia's capital Sukhbaatar district, 60-year-old shepherdess Tsogtsetseg stands on tiptoe and looks hopefully at a nearly completed residential building, clutching a floor plan tightly in her hands.

“They say it will be possible to move in soon,” she says. “I come to look every few days.” With a gleam in her eyes, she points to the balcony on the apartment plan: “I’ll plant flowers here, my grandson will run around on the grass in the yard.”

The residential complex “1008 apartments near the Green Lake,” where Tsogtsetseg dreams of moving, is being built with the support of China. This project, scheduled for completion in August of this year, brings 1,008 families closer to the dream of their own apartment.

In June 2022, a project to reconstruct ger districts was launched with the support of China. It is being carried out by China Second Metallurgy Group Co., Ltd. The project aims to improve the living conditions of the population of Ulaanbaatar and solve the problem of housing shortage for residents of ger districts.

"The project is aimed at the real needs of residents of the ger districts of Ulaanbaatar. In addition to residential buildings, basic infrastructure facilities are being built at the same time – water supply, electricity supply, as well as social facilities, including a service center, a kindergarten, small green areas. Thus, both living conditions and everyday comfort are improved," said Li Haofei, a representative of the contractor.

"I saw that our Chinese friends build houses with special care. I especially liked the showroom, exactly the same as my new apartment will be: a bright living room, a clean bathroom, hot water around the clock – it will be comfortable and cozy to live there," Tsogtsetseg says enthusiastically.

The 1,008 social housing project is one of many Chinese aid projects in Mongolia. In recent years, China has built a highway to the new Ulaanbaatar International Airport, a rehabilitation center for children with disabilities, and several schools in Mongolia, thereby providing comprehensive support for the country's development.

The China-built Rehabilitation Center for Children with Disabilities regularly treats patients. The center's director, Uganetsetseg, noted that over the six years of its operation, more than 40,000 children have been treated here. China also continues to provide materials and train personnel, which helps improve the health of children.

Mongolians highly value medical care from China. A month ago, 68-year-old Dorjsureng from Ulaanbaatar underwent free cataract surgery at the People's Hospital in Erenhot, China. His vision has improved significantly: he can watch TV and read newspapers again.

"I am truly grateful to the Red Cross Society of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The operation was successful, and I can now see very clearly with this eye. When I fully recover, I will definitely go to China and see more cities," he says.

From May 21 to 23 this year, within the framework of the Belt and Road – Bright Journey project, a campaign to examine patients with cataracts was held in Ulaanbaatar. As a result, 120 residents of Mongolia were operated for free at the Erenhot People's Hospital in late June.

The Bright Journey Project, a cross-border humanitarian project of the Inner Mongolia Red Cross Society and the Mongolian Red Cross Society, has been running since 2019 and has helped 645 Mongolian patients restore their vision, helping to strengthen the ties between the peoples of China and Mongolia. –0–

GAZA, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — Israeli shelling and shooting across Gaza killed at least 83 Palestinians on Tuesday, the Gaza Civil Defense said.

Mahmoud Basal, a civil defense spokesman, told Xinhua that the dead included 58 people who were waiting for aid in northern, central and southern Gaza.

He added that dozens of people were admitted to Gaza hospitals with various injuries sustained as a result of Israeli attacks.

The Israeli army did not immediately comment on the incidents.

Meanwhile, the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the militant wing of the Hamas movement, said in a statement that they “together with the al-Quds Brigades and the Nasser Brigades, fired mortars at several Israeli soldiers and vehicles north of the city of Khan Younis, south of the Gaza Strip.”

At least 9,519 Palestinians have been killed and 38,630 wounded since Israel resumed intensive strikes on Gaza on March 18, bringing the total number of deaths since October 2023 to 61,020 and the number of wounded to 150,671, Gaza health authorities said on Tuesday.

Eight new deaths from hunger and malnutrition were recorded in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths from these causes since October 2023 to 188, including 94 children, authorities said.

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — Two to three typhoons are expected to make landfall in China or impact the country in August, according to a briefing jointly held by the Office of the National Disaster Prevention and Relief Commission and the Ministry of Emergency Management on Tuesday.

One of these typhoons is expected to affect areas north of the Yangtze River, the event noted.

In August, all seven major river basins in China entered flood season, while some rivers in the Haihe, Songhuajiang (Sungari) and Liaohe River basins are at risk of relatively major flooding.

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — China plans to abolish fees for care and tuition of children in public kindergartens for the last year before entering primary school starting from the fall semester of 2025, according to guidelines released by the State Council on Tuesday.

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — There were 16.1 million electric vehicle charging infrastructure facilities in China as of the end of June 2025, the Jingji Cancaobao newspaper reported, citing data from the National Administration of Energy (SAE).

BUCHAREST, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — Former Romanian President Ion Iliescu died on Tuesday at the age of 95, the Romanian government said.

According to health authorities, since early June 2025, I. Iliescu had been undergoing treatment in a hospital in Bucharest, where he was later diagnosed with lung cancer. In the last days of his life, his condition deteriorated sharply.

I. Iliescu served as President of Romania from 1990 to 1996 and from 2000 to 2004.

Tbilisi, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili has signed a decree scheduling local government elections in the country for October 4, 2025, the presidential administration reported on Tuesday.
