CHANGCHUN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — China opened a new high-speed railway on Sunday that will significantly cut travel time from Beijing to the famous Changbai Mountain in northeast China's Jilin Province, boosting winter sports and ice and snow tourism in the country.

This line connects Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province, with Changbaishan Station in Antu County, Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, Jilin Province. UN, September 28 /Xinhua/ – The snapback mechanism is a trap for Iran, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Saturday.

This mechanism was included in UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which approved the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, following direct negotiations between the Iranian Foreign Minister and the then US Secretary of State, Lavrov told reporters.

In essence, the mechanism allowed any country to put a resolution to a vote to maintain the sanctions-lifting regime, he noted, adding that even a single member of the UN Security Council with veto power could block such a resolution, which would mean there would be no extension of the sanctions lifting.

Iran agreed to it because it did not expect the US to withdraw from the deal in 2018, noted Sergei Lavrov, who took part in the negotiations on the deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

After the US withdrawal from the JCPOA, Europe, instead of demanding Washington return to its obligations, also began to shirk its commitments under the deal. Now, the Europeans are selectively taking only what benefits them from Resolution 2231, said Sergey Lavrov.

According to him, the mechanism was created as a trap for Iran and is further evidence that Tehran had no intention of violating its obligations under the nuclear deal.

On Friday, the UN Security Council failed to adopt a resolution drafted by China and Russia that would have extended the JCPOA and Resolution 2231.

S. Lavrov warned against initiating the process of reinstating sanctions against Iran, noting that this would deal a serious blow to the authority and credibility of the UN.

According to him, Iran has recently held talks with the European troika. However, their results only confirmed that the Europeans had been trying to find any excuse to reinstate sanctions from the very beginning.

JINAN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — Qufu, the hometown of Confucius in east China's Shandong Province, held events Sunday to commemorate the 2,576th anniversary of the birth of the ancient Chinese philosopher.

The Confucius worship ceremony began around 9:00 a.m. Participants, wearing yellow ribbons, laid baskets of flowers at the statue of Confucius. Shandong Provincial People's Government Chairman Zhou Naixiang delivered a eulogy, and everyone present bowed before the statue. The ceremony lasted about an hour.

CHANGCHUN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — Former Chinese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Tang Renjian was sentenced to death on Sunday with a two-year reprieve for accepting large-scale bribes.

According to the verdict handed down by the Intermediate People's Court of Changchun City, Jilin Province (northeast China), Tang Renjian, who also served as secretary of the Party Group of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, was deprived of his political rights for life. All his personal property, as well as any illegal income, will be confiscated and retained by the state.

Between 2007 and 2024, Tang Renjian, while holding various positions at both the central and local levels, was found to have abused his official position to assist relevant organizations and individuals in matters such as business operations, project contracting, and personnel reshuffles. BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — China's total length of offshore oil and gas pipelines has exceeded 10,000 kilometers, marking a comprehensive leap in the development of engineering technology and equipment manufacturing in the country's offshore sector, the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) said Sunday.

Since the implementation of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), more than 1,500 kilometers of offshore pipelines have been laid in the country, with the maximum operating depth reaching 1,542 meters. BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — The first batch of flood relief supplies provided by the Chinese government to Pakistan was dispatched from Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province, on Sunday, according to the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).

Supplies including tents and blankets were delivered by two PLA Air Force Y-20 aircraft to Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan.
