JAKARTA, October 5 (Xinhua) — The death toll from the school building collapse in Indonesia's East Java province has risen to 45, a regional rescue official said on Sunday.

According to Nanang Sigit, head of the East Java Search and Rescue Agency, all the victims were taken to Bhayangkara Regional Police Hospital for identification.

"Procedural actions will be carried out after the rubble is cleared," said East Java Police Chief Nanang Awianto.

Part of the multi-story building of the Al-Khozini Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo County collapsed on September 29 during unauthorized renovation work, trapping dozens of students under the rubble.

On October 2, rescuers deployed heavy equipment after signs of life ceased to be detected at the collapse site. Previously, they had primarily relied on manual methods to clear the rubble due to concerns that using heavy equipment could cause further collapse.

BUDAPEST, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) — Hungarian Foreign and Trade Minister Peter Szijjarto on Sunday criticized the European Union's proposed seven-year budget for 2028-2034, calling it a "Ukraine budget" and warning that European taxpayers' money would be spent on Ukraine instead of strengthening the European economy.

Speaking on public radio station Kossuth Radio, P. Szijjártó noted that EU leaders plan to allocate citizens' money for arming and equipping the Ukrainian army and supporting the Ukrainian state.

“The Hungarian government will not allow Hungarian citizens to pay an even higher price for the war in Ukraine,” he emphasized.

Criticizing the rise of a long-term, war-oriented mentality in Brussels and throughout Western Europe, the Hungarian Foreign Minister declared a "severe war psychosis" among European political leaders. He acknowledged that the European economy faces serious challenges and expressed the view that EU funds should be used to restore competitiveness, not to finance Ukraine.

P. Szijjártó added that Hungary will not support such measures.

In July, the European Commission proposed a €2 trillion (US$2.33 trillion) budget for 2028-2034, which is subject to approval by the European Parliament and the Council before being finalized. It includes €131 billion for defense and space, five times more than in the current budget plan.

Tbilisi, October 5 (Xinhua) — Destabilization efforts in Georgia were orchestrated by forces acting on behalf of foreign intelligence services, President Mikheil Kavelashvili stated at a briefing on Sunday.

M. Kavelashvili assessed the events of October 4 that unfolded near the presidential residence.

According to him, government agencies will take strict measures against calls for the violent overthrow of the government. "Forces organized by foreign intelligence services attempted to destabilize the domestic situation," Kavelashvili noted.

The President of Georgia stated that in recent days, society has witnessed acts of vandalism and provocative actions aimed at undermining public order. In particular, parts of the city's historically valuable infrastructure, popular among local residents and tourists, were destroyed.

M. Kavelashvili emphasized that such actions are unacceptable, and the wise Georgian people will not allow anyone to change the country's government by force. He expressed confidence in the resilience of state institutions and called on the competent authorities to respond strictly to any attempts at destabilization.

On October 4, municipal elections were held in Georgia, during which mass unrest erupted near the presidential residence in the capital, Tbilisi. According to the Ministry of Health, 21 Interior Ministry employees and six demonstrators were hospitalized as a result of the clashes. Georgian Deputy Interior Minister Alexander Darakhvelidze reported on Sunday that Interior Ministry officers had detained several protest leaders.

Cairo, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) — Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar on Sunday issued a joint statement welcoming steps by the Palestinian Hamas movement towards the Gaza ceasefire plan put forward by US President Donald Trump.

According to the document, the foreign ministers of these eight countries welcomed “the steps taken by Hamas regarding Trump’s proposal to end the war in Gaza, release all hostages, living and dead, and immediately begin negotiations on implementation mechanisms.”

They also praised Hamas's statement of "readiness to hand over the governance of the Gaza Strip to a transitional Palestinian administrative committee composed of independent technocrats" and stressed the need to immediately begin negotiations to agree on mechanisms for implementing the American proposal and to consider all its aspects.

The foreign ministers also welcomed Donald Trump's call for Israel to "immediately cease bombing and begin implementing the exchange agreement." They expressed gratitude to the American president for his commitment to establishing peace in the region.

The Foreign Ministers stated that this development of events represents “a real opportunity to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire and resolve the critical humanitarian situation facing the residents of the Gaza Strip.”

The diplomats reaffirmed their joint commitment to supporting efforts to implement the American proposal, end the war in Gaza, and achieve a “comprehensive agreement” that ensures unimpeded humanitarian access, prevents forced displacement of Palestinians, and protects civilians.

In addition, they called for the return of the Palestinian National Authority to the Gaza Strip, the unification of Gaza and the West Bank, the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops, the reconstruction of Gaza, and the achievement of a just peace based on a two-state solution.

A day earlier, Egypt announced that it would host delegations from Israel and Hamas on September 6 to discuss the terms and details of an exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners as part of Donald Trump's ceasefire proposal.

According to an updated report from the Gaza Health Authority, since October 7, 2023, Israel's military campaign in the enclave, in addition to infrastructure destruction and starvation, has resulted in the deaths of more than 67,000 Palestinians and the injury of approximately 170,000 others. –0–

Tehran, October 5 (Xinhua) — The recent agreement to resume cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) can no longer serve as the basis for bilateral cooperation, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated at a press conference.

He noted that the snapback mechanism had "changed the circumstances," according to the Iranian Student News Agency (ISNA), adding, "We are facing a new situation."

In September, Iran and the IAEA reached an agreement in Cairo on a new framework for cooperation. The agreement followed Tehran's suspension of cooperation with the IAEA in late June following Israeli-American strikes on its nuclear facilities and the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists. According to the agreement, any IAEA inspections were to be approved by Iran's Supreme National Security Council.

“The Cairo Agreement can no longer serve as the basis for our cooperation with the agency,” A. Araghchi emphasized.

He said there were no "justifiable" reasons for using the snapback mechanism and warned that it would only complicate negotiations and hinder diplomatic efforts.

He also noted that Iran has proven in practice that it does not seek to develop nuclear weapons, does not seek conflict, and does not want to escalate tensions, reiterating that diplomacy remains the only viable way to resolve the nuclear issue.

In August, the EU3 countries (the UK, France, and Germany) activated the snapback mechanism, which led to the reimposition of UN sanctions after the Security Council failed to extend the sanctions relief regime in September. –0–

SHANGHAI, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) — In exactly one month, the eastern Chinese metropolis of Shanghai will once again step onto the global stage with the China International Import Expo (CIIE), underscoring China's commitment to further opening up to the outside world and sharing development opportunities with the rest of the world.

The CIIE, first held in 2018, opened a new chapter in the history of global trade. Since then, the expo has consistently expanded its scope and improved its effectiveness.

As the world's first national-level import-focused expo, the CIIE has showcased nearly 3,000 new products, technologies and services over the past seven years, with the transaction volume of IOUs for goods and services exceeding US$500 billion during the year.

Against the backdrop of growing instability and uncertainty in the global economy and trade, holding the 8th CIIE is of particular significance, said Wu Zhengping, Deputy Director-General of the CIIE Bureau.

GLOBAL MEETING

Dozens of countries and international organizations have confirmed their participation in the upcoming event's comprehensive national exhibitions, with Kyrgyzstan joining for the first time. More than 3,200 enterprises from over 110 countries and regions have signed up to participate in the business event, which covers 360,000 square meters of exhibition space.

Preparations for the exhibition are in full swing. The first batch of exhibits, comprising 279 items from Germany, arrived in Shanghai on September 26, including many debutants on both a global and regional scale. In addition, cargoes from New Zealand and the South Pacific island nations, such as dairy products and coconut oil, are also heading to Shanghai.

Theland Asia Pacific Region General Manager Sheng Wenhao noted that over the past eight years, CIIE has not only witnessed but also facilitated the company's development, enabling it to establish partnerships with dozens of professional buyers and expand its reach to more than 5,000 retail outlets in 25 provincial-level regions in China.

Despite growing global uncertainty, the CIIE continues to serve as a bridge, enabling everyone to access development opportunities and enabling countries in the Global South and least developed countries to access new markets and expand trade links.

For the first time, this year's CIIE will set aside a special exhibition area for products from least developed countries that have established diplomatic relations with China, to help their enterprises fully utilize the zero-tariff policy and tap into China's vast market.

OPPORTUNITIES ON THE BIG STAGE

Innovation will be a key highlight of the exhibition, as leading companies and enterprises will showcase their latest products, confirming CIIE's status as a showcase for the world's most advanced technologies.

German healthcare and agribusiness giant Bayer, a regular participant at CIIE, will showcase its products in two 800-square-meter sections. Bayer will showcase 25 exhibits, five of which will be unveiled globally, ten will be making their Chinese debut, and ten will be debuting at CIIE.

“We will continue to invest in China, accelerate investment, and work hand in hand with industry partners to grow together and share China’s development opportunities,” said Antia Zhang, vice president of public affairs for Bayer Group Greater China.

Siemens Mobility Greater China CEO Jürgen Model said the company will present its integrated digital solutions platform and digital maintenance solution for rail vehicles, focusing on innovative artificial intelligence applications in the field of intelligent maintenance and lifecycle management of railway signaling systems and rail vehicles.

“For Siemens Mobility, the China International Import Expo has become an invaluable platform for showcasing our latest innovations and identifying new opportunities to collaborate with our partners to create solutions that meet the specific needs of the Chinese market,” Yu Model told Xinhua News Agency.

This year, the exhibition also provides small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from around the world with the opportunity to shine on the big stage. More than 80 international business associations from over 50 countries and regions will be representing over 1,500 SMEs at the CIIE.

Dorothy Tembo, Deputy Executive Director of the International Trade Centre, explained that in recent years, SMEs from Africa, Asia, and Latin America have brought a wide variety of products to the exhibition—from Ethiopian coffee and Rwandan chili peppers to Nepalese cashmere. Thanks to their participation, many of these products have now become favorites among Chinese consumers, she noted.

“We look forward to seeing this same magic in action at CIIE 2025, and the excitement won’t stop there,” added D. Tembo. -0-
