BEIJING, November 4 (Xinhua) — China's National Health Commission, along with four other government agencies, called for the broader application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the national healthcare sector in the coming years, according to a joint document released on Tuesday.

The document states that by 2030, the use of AI in diagnostic and treatment assistance should be widely implemented in all primary health care institutions in China, including community and rural health centers.

At the same time, hospitals ranked at Level 2 and above under China's three-tier classification of medical institutions should widely implement AI technologies such as intelligent diagnosis based on medical imaging and AI-assisted clinical decision-making.

The document also proposes to expand the use of AI in patient care, enabling hospitals to offer integrated intelligent services throughout the entire treatment process, including accurate appointment scheduling, care prioritization, pre-diagnosis, and follow-up care.

In addition, according to the document, China plans to upgrade its intelligent epidemic monitoring and early warning systems to provide targeted, real-time support for decision-making on the prevention and control of infectious diseases. –0–

Chengdu, November 4 (Xinhua) — China has opened a new giant panda base in southwest China's Sichuan Province to boost panda conservation and breeding efforts, as well as research and international cooperation. This brings the total number of bases operated by the China Center for the Protection and Research of the Giant Panda to five.

As part of China's broader efforts to protect ecosystems and biodiversity, a new base began trial operations after 13 pandas were transferred there on Tuesday. The base, which covers approximately 120 hectares in Mianyang City, is expected to open to visitors next year once the animals have adapted to their new home.

"The pandas are a little tense in their new environment, but overall, they're doing well," noted Huang Zhi, who leads the management and operations subgroup of the Mianyang base's preparatory work group. To help the giant pandas adapt safely to their new surroundings, the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas has dispatched experienced caretakers and veterinarians to the base.

According to the fourth national survey of giant pandas, Mianyang is home to 418 wild pandas, accounting for 22.4 percent of the country's total wild panda population. Mianyang has the highest number of wild pandas among all urban areas in China.

Since the 1980s, the China Giant Panda Conservation and Research Center has successfully addressed key issues with captive breeding, allowing the panda population to increase from 6 individuals in 1983 to more than 380 today. –0–

Participants in the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference, currently taking place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, adopted a resolution establishing World Day of Turkic Languages. It will be celebrated on December 15.

As stated in the document, the proclamation of a World Day of Turkic Languages will contribute to the implementation of UNESCO's priorities in the areas of linguistic and cultural diversity, regional and global cooperation, and the preservation and development of oral traditions and forms of expression.

The Turkic languages item was included on the agenda at the request of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, and Uzbekistan, with the support of 21 member states. The choice of December 15 was no coincidence: on this day in 1893, Danish scholar Wilhelm Thomsen announced the decipherment of the Orkhon alphabet, one of the oldest written documents attesting to the origins of the Turkic language family, which gave rise to, among others, Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Turkish, Turkmen, and Uzbek.

Within the framework of the World Day, various cultural presentations and events will be held, such as exhibitions, lectures, literary evenings, art performances, in order to demonstrate the cultural and social value of this language family as an object of cultural diversity of Turkic-speaking states, and to raise awareness of the Turkic language family and its contribution to the development of humanity.

Turkic languages are the mother tongue of more than 200 million people living in an area of approximately 12 million square kilometers in several UNESCO Member States.

General Conference

The General Conference, whose 43rd session is being held in Uzbekistan and will last until November 13, determines the direction and overall policies of UNESCO. Its responsibilities include determining the Organization's programs and budget. It also elects the members of the Executive Board and, every four years, appoints the Director-General.

The General Conference comprises representatives of all UNESCO Member States. It meets every two years and is attended by Member States and Associate Members, as well as observers from non-Member States, intergovernmental organizations, and non-governmental organizations. Each Member State has one vote at the General Conference, regardless of its population size or the size of its contribution to the budget.
