Novosibirsk, November 5, 2025: Researchers at the Novosibirsk State University Center for Artificial Intelligence (NSU CAI) have developed a voice assistant for smart home systems that can operate completely autonomously—without an internet connection. The new device, dubbed "Commander," enhances security and privacy, allowing users to control their devices with their voice without fear of hacking or personal data leakage.

"The key feature of the Commander is that no voice travels beyond the device—everything happens locally, without accessing external servers. This significantly reduces the risk of hacking and data leakage," said Evgeny Pavlovsky, a leading researcher at the NSU Center for Information Security. "This solution is, of course, more expensive, but it's essential for those who are particularly concerned about information security and don't want a microphone in the home eavesdropping and sending recordings to the cloud."

The development was completed by Ahsan Shakur, a master's student in the English-language master's program "Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Analytics" at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at NSU, under the supervision of specialists from the NSU Center for Information Technologies. In its current version, "Commander" can recognize commands such as "turn on the light," "turn off the fan," or "turn on the lamp in three minutes." But this is just the beginning—the system already supports several AI models and, in the future, will be able to analyze user habits, predicting their actions.

"We're testing the system so it can respond not only to direct commands but also to context. For example, if a person says, 'It's dark,' the device will automatically understand that the light needs to be turned on. All the data stays internal—nothing is transmitted externally," explains Evgeny Pavlovsky.

The device's operation is based on three artificial intelligence models. The first converts speech into text, the second understands the meaning of what is said, and the third executes commands. All of these models run locally, without connecting to cloud services. NSU notes that controlling household appliances doesn't require high computing power: the system can even run on a Raspberry Pi minicomputer.

In the future, "Commander" will be able to control any device that supports standard smart home protocols—HTTP, ZigBee, and LoRaWAN. This means users won't need to install additional software or search for special gadgets—the assistant is compatible with most smart plugs, lamps, and household appliances.

Developers believe that in the age of ubiquitous digitalization, security issues are becoming especially pressing. According to Evgeny Pavlovsky, most modern voice assistants, including well-known commercial solutions, continuously record and send data to external servers. This makes them vulnerable to both leaks and hacker attacks.

"Our idea is different: to create a system that 'hears' but doesn't 'transmit.' It understands commands and controls the home, but remains completely under the user's control. This is the right ideology for smart homes, and the market for such solutions is already emerging," the scientist emphasized.

The NSU Center for Information Systems Research team is currently continuing to refine the technology. The next step will be to integrate all three models into a single system capable of learning and adapting to the owner's habits. The researchers are confident that such autonomous solutions will be an important step toward creating safe and truly "smart" homes of the future.

To protect users from internal system errors, Evgeny Pavlovsky and his colleagues intend to use their Kappa framework for managing datasets and artificial intelligence models, which is designed to create a trusted artificial intelligence management environment.

The eighth China International Import Expo will be held in Shanghai from November 5 to 10. The arrival of exhibits from various countries is currently at a peak. On October 21, the ship "COSCO Felixstowe," which delivered exhibits for the CIIE by sea, safely arrived at Waigaoqiao Port after a month-long voyage. The cargo included such distinctive exhibits as dairy products, coconut oil, handicrafts, and others.

To date, more than 3,200 companies from over 110 countries and regions have confirmed their participation in the exhibition. The reserved exhibition space exceeds 360,000 square meters.

On October 22, Shanghai police held a press conference to present 20 measures in five areas aimed at simplifying procedures related to the CIIE. These included optimizing and improving entry and exit services, streamlining traffic management, improving ease of movement within the National Exhibition and Convention Center, streamlining registration and pass management, and other aspects.

Specifically, in the area of registration and pass management, in addition to expanding the reusability of passes, the registration deadline for the exhibition has been extended until October 31, and a "green corridor" for temporary registration has been opened.

To improve convenience, the number of electronic security checkpoints has been increased within the National Exhibition and Convention Center, reducing waiting times at the entrance. Additionally, the number of parking spaces has been increased by 5%, and arrangements have been made with nearby shopping centers to reserve parking spaces for exhibition participants.

For the first time, an electronic visa on arrival will be introduced for foreign participants at the exhibition. Companies and organizations will be able to apply for an electronic visa for invited foreign specialists. Foreign participants will be able to enter the country with an "Electronic Visa Confirmation on Arrival," enjoying benefits such as fully online application and eliminating the need for paper documents.

The 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) will be held from November 5 to 10 in Shanghai. From innovations in cosmetics technology to breakthroughs in home appliances, from promoting healthy lifestyles to embracing the concept of inclusiveness and common good, the expo continues to provide significant opportunities for global companies to showcase their innovative achievements and explore the Chinese market. It is also becoming an important window into emerging trends in China's consumer market.

At this year's CIIE, "premiere" will once again be the buzzword. Major companies will present innovative products debuting on the global or Chinese market, showcasing the latest technological advances in various industries.

L'Oréal, participating in the exhibition for the eighth consecutive year, is presenting its largest lineup of debut new products to date. It will include three new brands debuting in Asia, four beauty technology solutions debuting in the global and Chinese markets, and 19 new products.

"There's no other event in the world that L'Oréal enjoys such deep engagement and dedication," said Fabrice Megarbane, President of L'Oréal North Asia and CEO of L'Oréal China. "CIIE consistently focuses on the world's most cutting-edge trends, brings together talented innovators, inspires innovative ideas, and builds bridges for cross-industry collaboration."

Panasonic Corporation, a regular participant in CIIE for all eight years, will not only present a number of products this year—global innovations and new products being showcased in China for the first time—but will also announce the launch of its AI strategy for China for the first time at the exhibition. Tetsuro Homma, Global Vice President of Panasonic Holdings Co., Ltd., noted that China is not only a major manufacturing and consumer powerhouse, but also a great nation of innovation and engineers. "Many innovative products we developed in China are already being delivered to the global market, and I am confident this process will only accelerate. The scope of research and development in China across the Panasonic Group will continue to expand."

Every year, the "innovation concentration" at CIIE premieres remains exceptionally high. This energy is driven by the powerful gravitational pull of the Chinese market, reflecting rapidly changing consumer trends in China.

The 8th CIIE will place special emphasis on new themes, formats, and consumer trends. Specifically, the medical exhibition area will shift focus to the so-called "silver economy," featuring rehabilitation aids, products for the elderly, and sleep-improving technologies. The consumer goods exhibition area will feature a first-ever pet-themed demonstration area, showcasing high-quality global products in the "pet economy" using real-life scenes.

"In China, people are increasingly seeking to participate in fitness programs, sports, and social activities that help balance their bodies and minds and boost their energy," noted Calvin McDonald, CEO of active lifestyle brand Lululemon, speaking about the growing potential of sports consumption in the Chinese market. "We have always been confident in the long-term potential of the Chinese market and are committed to growing alongside it, helping create a healthier China and a happier future."

The importance of the CIIE as a global public good accessible to all is becoming increasingly clear. Wu Zhengping, Deputy Director of the CIIE Bureau, announced that, in addition to the existing support of free exhibition space, the current exhibition has established for the first time a special zone for products from least developed countries. This will help companies and products from these countries, which have established diplomatic relations with China, as well as from 53 African partner countries, fully leverage the benefits of the zero-tariff regime and share in the development opportunities offered by the vast Chinese market.

As the 8th China International Import Expo approaches, the world's attention is once again focused on Shanghai. On this platform, founded on openness and collaboration, companies from around the world will showcase their latest achievements, share development opportunities, and look forward to unlocking the vast potential and boundless possibilities of the Chinese market.

UN humanitarian agencies have delivered one million food parcels to Gaza.

November 4, 2025 Humanitarian aid

Food is gradually returning to Gaza's shelves, but remains in short supply, UN officials said on Tuesday, renewing calls for increased humanitarian access and continued financial support for aid agencies.

According to Abeer Etefa, a spokesperson for the UN World Food Programme (WFP), hundreds of thousands of people returned to northern Gaza last month, where famine was declared in late August. Their access to food remains limited.

Many of those who returned found their homes destroyed, while those displaced in the south "often live in tents, without access to food or basic services," added Etefa, who works for the WFP in Cairo.

Etefa noted that three and a half weeks after the ceasefire began, WFP has delivered food parcels to approximately one million people in Gaza. In total, 1.6 million people are expected to receive them.

“Supplies are still limited, so each family is receiving a reduced ration – one food package, designed to last for ten days,” she explained.

To scale up humanitarian operations to the level needed, WFP says it needs "more open border crossings and… the ability to use key roads inside Gaza."

All border crossings must be opened

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), no food convoys have reached the north of the Strip directly through border crossings since September 12.

“Only two border crossings remain operational: Kerem Shalom in the south of the enclave and Kissufim in central Gaza,” Etefa emphasized.

"This seriously limits the amount of assistance that WFP and other agencies can deliver to stabilize the market and meet the needs of the population," she added.

She noted that the lack of access through the northern crossings forces humanitarian convoys to take a "slow and difficult route from the south."

According to WFP, approximately 700,000 people receive fresh bread daily through 17 agency-supported bakeries – nine in the south and center and eight in the north. The goal is to increase the number of bakeries serving the population to 25.

"This help is really important."

WFP worker Noor Hammad, who is currently in Gaza, said she is seeing "apocalyptic scenes" across the enclave, with people's faces showing both joy and fear.

According to her, Gazans compare the destruction in the Strip "to the aftermath of an earthquake."

"At every distribution point I've visited in recent days, people say one thing: this aid is truly important," she said. After months of "stretching one meal out over several days," they are finally receiving fresh bread, food parcels, and cash transfers.

“This is where the road to recovery begins,” Hammad emphasized.

Currently, 200,000 Gazans are receiving digital cash transfers, allowing them to supplement their food aid with fresh produce from local markets. However, prices there remain very high.

"Food is gradually returning to the shelves, but prices are still unaffordable for most families," she explained. "After all, people exhausted all resources trying to survive two years of war. Today, for example, I buy an apple for the price that used to be equivalent to a kilogram."

The fragility of the ceasefire and the instability of aid flows, she said, remain the main sources of anxiety for Gazans. Hammad told the story of a displaced mother she met in the enclave: although the family receives humanitarian aid, the woman forbids her children from eating all the food at once because "she's not sure if there will be food tomorrow."

Yerevan, November 4 (Xinhua) — The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan can be considered politically resolved, but its consequences continue to be felt at the socio-psychological level. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this on Tuesday, speaking at the Orbeli 2025 international forum in Yerevan.

"Politically, the conflict has been exhausted and resolved, but the socio-psychological aspect is not something that can be stopped by simply slamming on the brakes. We must find the right formulas to overcome these phenomena," the Prime Minister noted. He added that the transition to peaceful coexistence between Armenia and Azerbaijan requires the will of political leadership.

N. Pashinyan emphasized that practical results have been achieved in recent years in the process of normalizing relations between the two countries. He mentioned the border delimitation, which began in 2024, and the signing of the regulation on the joint activities of delimitation commissions, which became the first international document between Armenia and Azerbaijan. According to him, the principle of delimitation was the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration, which enshrines the mutual recognition of territorial integrity.

The Prime Minister also recalled the "peace summit" held in Washington on August 8, 2025, which resulted in the initialing of an agreement on the establishment of peace and interstate relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. "Thus, peace has been established between the Republic of Armenia and Azerbaijan," Pashinyan stated.

The international forum "Orbeli 2025: Building Peace and Multilateral Cooperation" opened in Yerevan on November 4. Organized by the Armenian think tank Orbeli, the event brought together politicians, diplomats, and experts from more than 10 countries. The forum focused on peace and security in the South Caucasus, regional connectivity, and prospects for cooperation in transport and trade.

Beijing, November 4 (Xinhua) — Strengthening cohesion and cooperation with Africa remains a priority for China's foreign policy, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday.

Wang Yi, also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, made the announcement in Beijing during a meeting with the newly appointed Permanent Representative of the African Union (AU) to China, Alhaji Mohamed Sarjo Bah.

Noting that the 21st century should be a century of accelerated development and growth for both China and Africa, Wang Yi stressed that China highly values Africa's support for the global initiatives it has put forward.

The Chinese Foreign Minister stated that China is ready to work with Africa to implement the outcomes of the Beijing summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and implement measures to introduce zero tariffs on 100 percent of goods from all African countries with diplomatic relations with China. China also hopes to work with African countries to advance modernization and build an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future in the new era, the Chinese diplomat added.

A. M. Sarjo Bah, for his part, stated that the AU supports China's vision of a community with a shared future for humanity, as well as a number of major initiatives, including the Global Development Initiative. He added that the AU is ready to promote new fruitful results in bilateral cooperation for the benefit of the people of the African continent.
