Thousands of displaced people in northern Syria have been affected by a snowstorm, while layoffs continuehumanitarian fundingare limiting the ability to provide them with assistance, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Tuesday.

Last week, on December 31, a snowstorm hit 90 IDP sites in Aleppo, Idlib, and Hasakah provinces, affecting over 150,000 people.

Two babies have died due to extreme cold in the Harim area of northern Idlib, according to humanitarian organizations.

Around 5,000 shelters were completely destroyed or partially damaged, leaving thousands of people stranded outdoors in sub-zero temperatures. This significantly increases the risk of hypothermia and respiratory illnesses.

Accommodation centres in the city of Al-Hasakah, as well as collective shelters in Ar-Raqqa, have completely run out of fuel: previous support was stopped in December due to a lack of funds.

Following the snowstorm, humanitarian organizations provided stoves and fuel to more than 10,000 displaced people.

The UN and its partners require $112 million to provide assistance between September 2025 and March 2026. To date, only $29 million has been received – a funding gap of 74 percent.

Addis Ababa, January 7 (Xinhua) — At least 22 migrants were killed and about 65 others were injured in a road accident in Ethiopia's northeastern Afar region on Tuesday, the regional government's press service reported.

The truck carrying migrants overturned at dawn, the statement said. The victims are currently receiving treatment at nearby medical facilities, many of whom are in critical condition.

"The truck was overcrowded with migrants who had been deceived by illegal brokers and did not understand the dangers associated with the route," the press service stated.

In recent years, desperate Ethiopian migrants have frequently attempted to cross the Red Sea from Djibouti to reach the Middle East via Yemen. Many of them are hoping to find work in Saudi Arabia.

Paris, January 7 (Xinhua) — "Several thousand" French soldiers may be sent to Ukraine to maintain peace after the ceasefire, French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview with France 2 television on Tuesday.

According to him, "France will take part in operations" monitoring the Russian-Ukrainian border after the signing of the ceasefire agreement. HARBIN, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) — Harbin, known as the "Ice Capital of China," and Russia's Murmansk celebrated the 10th anniversary of their sister-city relationship by unveiling a jointly created ice sculpture called "Inspiration."

The unveiling ceremony for the memorial sculpture took place on Tuesday, January 6, in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province, northeast China. It was attended by Harbin Deputy Mayor Li Mian, Murmansk Deputy Mayor Andrei Kostin, Murmansk City Council Chairman of the Committee for Economic Development and Tourism Andrei Varich, and representatives of other relevant government agencies from both cities.

BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) — No casualties have been reported so far from the 5.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), the earthquake occurred at 3:17 a.m. Wednesday. The epicenter was located at 37.58 degrees north latitude and 74.93 degrees east longitude. The hypocenter was located at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Local authorities and emergency response agencies told Xinhua that there have been no reports of material damage. The earthquake did not damage local transportation infrastructure, power supply, or communications facilities, and normal life and work were not disrupted in the disaster area.
