Phnom Penh, January 7 (Xinhua) — Cambodia is committed to strictly and fully implementing the ceasefire agreement with Thailand to restore peace in both countries, Cambodian People's Party Chairman and Senate Speaker Hun Sen said on Wednesday.

Restoring peace between Cambodia and Thailand will also contribute to peace, security, stability and prosperity in the region, he added.

XI'AN, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) — A complex of 31 ancient tombs dating back nearly 3,000 years has been discovered in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, providing important materials for studying the political and social life of the period, archaeologists said Tuesday.

The discovered tombs are part of the Changchun Ruins and are located in Fuping County, Weinan City. Excavations began in August 2022 and are being conducted jointly by the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology, the Weinan City Museum, and the Fuping County Bureau of Culture and Tourism.

Archaeologists also discovered five burial pits containing carts and horses.

Li Yanfeng, a junior researcher at the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology, reported that the aforementioned tombs can be divided into four categories based on their morphological features. Among them, tombs numbered M1 and M2 are considered relatively high-quality burials. Excavations yielded over 300 artifacts, including copper, jade, stone, and shell objects, as well as lacquered ware. Particularly exquisite among these are jade pendants with human and dragon motifs, jade picks, and stone gongs.

The small tombs contained only single coffins and no bronze artifacts. Researchers found only clay vessels and shell jewelry, leading to the conclusion that the tomb owners were likely commoners.

According to Li Yanfeng, by comparing the shape characteristics of ceramic and bronze artifacts and examining human bones in M1 and M2 using carbon-14 dating, archaeologists determined that the remains in the excavation area may date back to the middle to late Western Zhou Dynasty (1046 BC – 771 BC). The owner of Tomb M2 is a man, and it is believed he was the ruler of the settlement, while Tomb M1 was the burial place of his wife.

BEIJING, January 7 (Xinhua) — An industrial demonstration project aimed at producing hydrogen and sulfur by decomposing the highly toxic gas hydrogen sulfide (H2S) was inspected in Beijing on Tuesday. It offers an innovative path to green transformation for traditional industries such as natural gas production, petrochemicals, and coal chemicals.

The project will process 100,000 cubic meters of H2S per year. It was developed by a team led by Academician Li Can from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). It is based on a technology that uses off-site electrocatalysis to completely decompose H2S into hydrogen and sulfur.

The project participants include Shandong Sunway Chemical Group Co., Ltd., the Yulin Institute of Clean Energy Innovation under the CSA, and Dalian Haoming Energy Technology Co., Ltd.

The H2S Emissions Problem

Global energy consumption remains dependent on natural gas, oil, and coal and faces environmental challenges associated with H2S emissions. This highly toxic compound can easily oxidize to sulfur dioxide, leading to acid rain and, consequently, environmental damage and serious health risks.

H2S is primarily generated as a byproduct or co-product of natural gas production, oil refining, and coal combustion. According to the China Sulfuric Acid Association, China requires the treatment of approximately 8 billion cubic meters of H2S annually, while the global total exceeds 70 billion cubic meters. The accumulated global volume of H2S is estimated at over 4 trillion cubic meters.

Given the widespread and hazardous nature of H2S, its complete elimination and disposal has always been a critical issue.

FROM LABORATORY TO FACTORY

Since 2003, Academician Li Can's team has been studying unconventional methods, such as using light and electricity to decompose H2S. Using innovative approaches, the team succeeded in producing sulfur and hydrogen in reactors spatially separated from the electrodes.

After more than 10 years of laboratory research, they succeeded in solving the problem of engineering scalability. More importantly, the innovative method fundamentally changed the reaction paradigm of traditional electrocatalytic systems, ensuring safety and reliability at the conceptual level.

The team then established collaboration with companies in the coal chemical industry to transfer the results from the laboratory to the plant for large-scale production.

GREEN TRANSFORMATION

The demonstration project utilizes H2S generated at the methanol plant of Henan Energy Chemical Group Co., Ltd. Operating data show that the H2S conversion rate at the plant exceeds 99.999%, and the purity of the sulfur and hydrogen products meets the highest commercial standards.

The team's technology offers a new way to completely eliminate and utilize hydrogen sulfide, providing both environmental and economic benefits.

If all 8 billion cubic meters of H2S that require processing annually were utilized using this technology using wind and solar energy, 730,000 tons of low-carbon hydrogen would be produced. -0-

BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) — The China Earthquake Administration has activated a Level 4 earthquake alert after a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region early Wednesday.

The earthquake occurred at 3:17 a.m. The epicenter was located at 37.58 degrees north latitude and 74.93 degrees east longitude. The hypocenter was located at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to data from the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
