Starting in 2026, the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Urban Management at the Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering will begin accepting applicants for a new program, "Environmental Management and Engineering Protection of Territories," within the framework of the 20.03.02 "Environmental Management and Water Management" program. This program is aimed at training specialists capable of addressing key issues related to ensuring the safety of territories, engineering infrastructure, and citizens.

Dmitry Ulrikh, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Urban Management at SPbGASU, Professor of the Department of Water Management and Ecology, Doctor of Engineering Sciences, and Associate Professor, discussed the specifics and significance of the new program. He stated that by launching this program, the university is contributing to the achievement of the national development goals of the Russian Federation, as stipulated by Presidential Decree No. 309 of May 7, 2024. The decision to launch the program was the result of an analysis of industry needs and the current challenges facing cities and regions.

"If we talk about the key task, it is, first and foremost, the engineering protection of territories. Every year, we face flooding, erosion processes, and the risk of infrastructure destruction. All these problems require practical, not theoretical, engineering solutions," noted Dmitry Ulrikh.

Engineering solutions instead of declarations

The new program focuses not on abstract discussions of territorial protection, but on the development and implementation of specific engineering measures. The educational program focuses on the design, construction, and operation of protective structures that ensure the safe and sustainable use of territories.

"As part of our program, we focus on the technologies for creating engineering barriers, dams, retaining and reinforcing structures, and methods for stabilizing banks and slopes from erosion. We will train students in the design of systems that protect territories and infrastructure and prevent negative natural processes such as flooding, landslides, erosion, and floods," explained the dean.

This approach will develop in future specialists an engineering mindset focused on results and responsibility for the decisions they make.

Interdisciplinarity as a competitive advantage

One of the key features of the new program is its interdisciplinary nature.

"The combination of engineering knowledge with practical skills in developing and implementing engineering measures for landscaping, as well as designing protective and fortifying structures, will make our graduates highly sought after in the relevant field," explained Dmitry Vladimirovich.

This approach allows us to train specialists capable of working at the intersection of design, construction, and operation of engineering facilities.

Practical training and work with real objects

The training of specialists in this new field is primarily focused on practical experience. The university builds its educational process in close collaboration with industrial partners.

During their studies, students will have the opportunity to:

Complete internships at leading industry organizations; solve real-world engineering problems; and complete coursework and final theses based on materials from partner companies.

"We introduce our students to their partners from their first year so they understand the challenges they will face in their professional careers," the dean explained.

The courses will be taught by practicing specialists with practical experience in the field of engineering protection of territories and hydraulic engineering.

Labor market-oriented competencies

Graduates of the "Environmental Management and Engineering Protection of Territories" program will possess a broad range of professional competencies. They will be able to work as engineers specializing in hydraulic structures, environmental management, engineering protection of territories, land reclamation, monitoring and operation of protective systems, and more.

"Market analysis shows that specialists in this field are always in demand. It's a profession with clear career prospects and opportunities for growth," noted Dmitry Vladimirovich.

In addition, the program develops skills in risk assessment and engineering systems management, which is especially important in the face of increasing natural and man-made threats.

A profession with high social significance

Engineering protection of territories involves not only design and calculations, but also responsibility for the safety of people, the sustainability of the urban environment, and the preservation of infrastructure.

"Working in this field is a contribution to the safety of thousands of people and to the reliable operation of communications, transport, and energy facilities," says Dmitry Ulrikh. He believes the new training profile rightfully aligns with the motto "Create a safe future and protect the country's infrastructure!"

Beijing, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) — With the approach of the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year, the traditional Chinese Lunar New Year), aquatic products imported from Russia are experiencing a boom in popularity in the Sino-Russian border trade zone located at the Tongjiang River Port in the city of the same name (Heilongjiang Province, northeast China).

According to Zhongguo Xinwenshe news agency correspondents, a long line of local residents formed at the store to buy these products. Many locals appreciate high-quality Russian frozen fish for its tender meat and wide selection.

To facilitate purchasing goods in the border trade zone, its administration launched an online trading platform that provides information and accepts online payments. Consumers can obtain advance information on product availability and complete some of the purchasing procedures. Each shipment of aquaculture products is accompanied by a QR code for tracking, containing information on the origin, transportation, and quarantine status of the products. On-site purchases can be completed in just five minutes.

An "intelligent declaration terminal" has been fully implemented in the border trade zone's sales area, allowing residents of border areas to complete the entire purchasing, payment, and invoicing process with a simple face scan. At the same time, trade between residents of border areas is becoming more convenient and active as a result of the continued expansion of Russian aquatic product imports and the rapid availability of high-quality goods.

Since the beginning of this year, the Tongjiang Border Trade Zone has imported more than 70 tons of Russian aquatic products, including lenok, Chinese scaly-bellied carp, common carp, bighead carp, and other fish popular with Chinese consumers, ensuring a rich selection at the fish market during the Spring Festival.

BEIJING, January 23 (Xinhua) — On Wednesday, the third New Year's Goods Festival opened in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, following the arrival of a freight train loaded with grain, oil, honey, and other Kazakh agricultural products from Kazakhstan on the international China-Europe freight route in Xi'an, Northwest China. The event is dedicated to the upcoming Spring Festival (Chinese New Year, the traditional Chinese Lunar New Year), according to the official website of the Zhongguo Xinwenshe News Agency.

Among the New Year's products on display at this festival were new food products such as dry noodles made in Kazakhstan, said Liu Dongmeng, secretary of the party committee of Xi'an Aiju Grain and Oil Industrial Group, adding that the train, which departed from Aiju's overseas production park in North Kazakhstan, entered Aiju's factory in Xi'an via a special railway line after arriving at Xi'an International Port Station using a door-to-door system.

At the festival, visitors are offered not only signature products such as beer and snacks from Kazakhstan and red wine from Georgia, but also delicacies with local flavor, such as authentic Shaanxi desserts and pepper oil.

This year's festival will run until February 14. In addition to traditional products from Belt and Road Initiative countries and renowned Shaanxi enterprises, a specially created "Chinese New Year" cultural interaction zone and an area where visitors can prepare traditional Shaanxi dishes themselves have been created.

Capitalizing on the speed and convenience of China-Europe trains, special trains carrying New Year's goods, serviced by Xi'an International Port, have been operating for many years. Not only do they add variety to the delicacies on holiday tables, but they also help businesses reduce costs and improve efficiency, and facilitate closer and more effective trade and economic exchanges between Shaanxi Province and Central Asia.

Minsk, January 23 (Xinhua) — Friendship with China allows Belarus to live in a safer world. This was stated by Sergei Rachkov, Chairman of the Standing Committee on International Affairs of the House of Representatives (lower house) of Belarus, on the Belarus-1 television channel's "Economic Environment" program, dedicated to the 34th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Belarus and China.

"Friendship with China allows Belarus to live in a safer world. I believe that having such a strong friend, practically a superpower, allows Belarus to feel more secure and implement the plans put forward, including by the All-Belarusian People's Assembly, for 2026-2030," said Sergei Rachkov.

He noted that China has always provided political support to Belarus. Belarus, in turn, always stands with China on all international platforms. "Interparliamentary cooperation between the two countries not only complements but also expands interstate dialogue," explained Sergei Rachkov.

According to him, significant changes in interparliamentary cooperation between the countries have occurred since 2023: the National Assembly of Belarus and the National People's Congress of China signed an agreement on interparliamentary cooperation.

"We've established a new mechanism that helps us raise the level of this cooperation. This is a high-level cooperation commission. Two meetings of this commission have already taken place, both in China and Belarus. Within its framework, we're addressing issues of exchanging legislative experience and public administration. We're reviewing the two countries' positions on the international stage and, naturally, discussing where we can and should support each other even more," S. Rachkov concluded.
