Baku, December 14 /Xinhua/ — "What a magnificent performance! I loved every number! This is my first time watching Chinese acrobatics, and I am deeply moved by the artists' skill. Thank you to the Chinese acrobatic troupe for such a miracle," Elnara, a spectator, shared her emotions with a Xinhua correspondent after the Liaocheng City Acrobatic Troupe's performance in Baku, Shandong Province, eastern China.

The Chinese acrobatic troupe gave its first performance on December 13 at the Sea Breeze Circus in Azerbaijan's capital. The 1,000-seat auditorium filled to capacity to see traditional Chinese acrobatics, including lion dances, aerial silk dances, and dragon dances on benches.

In the lion dance, the performers demonstrated virtuoso body control and exceptional coordination, following the rhythm of the music. They embodied the lion with majestic strength and good-natured humor. From the menacing roar and twitching mane to the playful wink, every movement reflected the sophistication of Eastern aesthetics and symbolized a wish for happiness.

In the aerial silk dance, the dancers twirled through the air, displaying power and grace. The acrobats' exquisite skill blended perfectly with the melody of a Chinese song.

"My children and I made a special trip from Mingachevir to Baku. The Chinese artists' performance was breathtaking, especially the aerial silk duet—it was simply incredible and impressive," said Gultekin Magomedova.

The atmosphere in the hall changed when the performers began performing a dragon dance on benches. Everyone in attendance held their breath, fearing that the long dragon, constructed from more than 20 benches, might fall off the acrobat's head.

The performers' calm and composure, as well as their astonishing ability to balance the complex structure on their heads, delighted the audience. When the performance concluded, the hall erupted in prolonged applause.

In 2006, Liaocheng Acrobatic Art was inscribed on China's first Intangible Cultural Heritage List. The Liaocheng Acrobatic Troupe's tour of Azerbaijan will continue until January 11, 2026.

Allahverdi Israfilov, the organizer of the performances and director of the Azerbaijani Circus Sea Breeze, is a former aerialist himself. He worked for a long time in various Chinese circuses and received an award at the China International Circus Festival. According to him, Chinese acrobatic art is evolving with the times and demonstrates a powerful vitality.

This year, he decided to invite a Chinese acrobatic troupe to Azerbaijan to help Azerbaijanis learn more about China. "We were delighted to invite the Chinese circus to our New Year's program to showcase the skills of talented Chinese artists. Today, China is a leader not only in economics and innovation, but also in circus arts," he noted.

A. Israfilov emphasized that against the backdrop of the continuous development of Azerbaijani-Chinese relations, especially within the framework of the Belt and Road initiative, Azerbaijanis' interest in Chinese culture is growing.

"Chinese artists are very friendly and easy to collaborate with. I believe this opens up great prospects for collaboration in the circus industry," added the director of the Azerbaijani circus.

Kyiv, December 14 (Xinhua) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the US-proposed compromise on creating a demilitarized economic zone in Donbas unfair. This was reported on Sunday by the Ukrinform news agency.

Given that official Kyiv refused to give up its territory, the US proposed a compromise: creating an economic zone in a certain part of Donbas, withdrawing the Ukrainian army from there and prohibiting Russian troops from entering, noted V. Zelensky.

Meanwhile, in his opinion, the American proposal is unfair, as it remains unclear who will control this zone. Furthermore, if Washington demands that the Ukrainian Armed Forces withdraw 5-10 kilometers, then the Russian army should take a similar step, the Ukrainian leader emphasized.

V. Zelenskyy compared resolving the armed conflict with Russia to a long-distance sprint. He noted that if peace cannot be established soon, then it will be necessary to "pull ourselves together, find another path, and do everything again to end this war."

Kyiv, December 14 (Xinhua) – Ukraine will agree to security guarantees from its international partners, modeled on Article 5 of the NATO Charter. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told reporters this, the Ukrinform news agency reported on Sunday.

V. Zelenskyy recalled that Ukraine wanted to join the North Atlantic Alliance to receive real security guarantees, but the United States and some European countries did not support its aspirations. As a compromise, Kyiv could agree to a number of bilateral security guarantees, modeled on Article 5 of the NATO Charter, from the United States, European states, Japan, and Canada.

At the same time, the Ukrainian president noted that he is not yet ready to share specific details of the security guarantees with the press and will do so later.

December 14, 2025 Culture and education

On December 15, the international community will celebrate the World Day of Turkic Languages for the first time. The decision was made at the UNESCO General Conference held in Samarkand in November. The organization considers this an important step toward recognizing linguistic diversity, which enriches our common human heritage.

The choice of date is symbolic and deeply meaningful. On December 15, 1983, Danish linguist Wilhelm Thomsen announced the successful decipherment of the Orkhon inscriptions, one of the oldest known written sources. The inscriptions were created by ancient Turks in the Orkhon Valley, in what is now Mongolia, in the 8th century CE and discovered in 1889.

Thomsen's achievement provided invaluable insight into the linguistic tradition that today links dozens of communities across Eurasia.

A language family that is spread across different continents

UNESCO emphasizes that languages belonging to the Turkic language family, such as Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Turkish, Turkmen and Uzbek, among others, are native to more than 200 million people in an area of approximately 12 million square kilometers.

A rich documentary heritage in Turkic languages, as well as vibrant oral traditions, is shared by more than 10 states.

Promoting multilingualism and cultural dialogue

The initiative to celebrate World Day was put forward by Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Türkiye, and Uzbekistan. It was supported by 21 countries.

By declaring December 15 as World Day of Turkic Languages, UNESCO emphasizes the importance of linguistic cooperation, cultural rapprochement and dialogue among civilizations.

The initiative aims to strengthen international cooperation in linguistic research, education, and cultural exchange. UNESCO notes that this day will facilitate large-scale scientific research and promote global dialogue aimed at preserving Turkic languages.

Starting in 2025, World Turkic Language Day will feature a variety of cultural and academic events, including exhibitions dedicated to linguistic heritage, lectures and public discussions, and literary and poetry evenings.

Russian experts: China's publication of Russian archives on Unit 731 is a powerful act of solidarity in the fight to preserve historical memory

Beijing, December 14 (Xinhua) — China's release of evidence received from Russia related to Japan's infamous "Unit 731" is not just a practice of information exchange, but a powerful act of solidarity between the two countries in the fight to preserve historical memory, which has significant implications for the present and future. Russian experts stated this in a written interview with Xinhua.

On Saturday, the 12th National Remembrance Day for the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre, the Central Archives of China released a package of declassified archives provided by the Russian side, covering the period from May 11, 1939 to December 25, 1950, containing trial transcripts of Unit 731 members, investigation reports into the unit's crimes, and internal official correspondence of the Soviet Union's authorities.

"This event, timed to coincide with a memorable date, is profoundly significant for the joint defense of historical truth and the fight against the growing trend of historical nihilism," said Artem Semenov, advisor to the Governor of the Moscow Region and member of the Rossotrudnichestvo Public Council.

He noted that Unit 731, infamous for its inhumane human experiments, is one of the darkest symbols of Japanese militarism. These crimes remained in the shadows for a long time, and attempts to cover them up or distort them, unfortunately, continue.

According to the Central Archives of China, archival materials provided by Russia reveal for the first time the Soviet Union's investigative process during the preliminary stages of the 1949 Khabarovsk Trials, which identified more than 200 people linked to Unit 731 crimes and ultimately selected 12 war criminals for public trials.

Those brought to trial fully confessed to their crimes related to violations of international conventions and the preparation and conduct of bacteriological warfare.

"Russian archives containing evidence of Unit 731's activities represent a valuable source of information. Their publication will supplement and confirm existing data, making the picture of the Japanese militarists' crimes even more complete and indisputable. This will deal a serious blow to any attempts to deny or downplay the scale of these atrocities," said A. Semenov.

According to Marina Dmitrieva, Deputy Director for Science and Innovation at the Far Eastern Federal University's Institute of Oriental Studies, the publication of the archives draws the world's attention to the scale and brutality of Unit 731's crimes.

"The documents serve as a reminder of the importance of the principles enshrined in the Charters of the Nuremberg and Tokyo Tribunals and serve as a warning about the consequences of violating humanity, which is crucial for maintaining the modern international legal order," she said. "Their publication is a practical step toward protecting the post-war world order based on the UN Charter and historical justice."

Experts believe that China and Russia's collaboration in publishing these archives demonstrates that countries that have experienced the horrors of war are willing to join forces to protect the truth and prevent a recurrence of tragedies. This will allow for a broader public understanding of these tragic pages of history, a reminder of the suffering of the victims, and the need to learn from the past.

"China and Russia, as the main victorious countries in World War II and permanent members of the UN Security Council, bear a special responsibility for preserving the historical memory and protecting the results of that war. Their joint actions in this direction have profound symbolic and practical significance," A. Semenov emphasized.

"Chinese-Russian cooperation in this area serves as an example of how countries can and should work together to combat the falsification of history, using diplomatic, academic, and public channels. This strengthens strategic mutual trust and the moral authority of both countries," stated M. Dmitrieva.

"In 2026-2027, Russia and China will hold cross-years of education. This is an excellent opportunity for universities to contribute to the preservation of history. Conferences, roundtables, and exhibitions of historical documents dedicated to shared history will help preserve memory among the youth of both countries," the expert concluded.

During World War II, the Japanese invaders established a network of biological and chemical weapons in many Asian countries, and the base of Unit 731, a secret unit of the Japanese army engaged in the research and development of biological and chemical weapons, was established in Harbin (Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China) and served as the main center of militaristic Japan for conducting bacteriological warfare and human experiments.

At least 3,000 people from China, the USSR, and other countries and regions became victims of bacteriological experiments on humans conducted by Unit 731. -0-

Tehran, December 14 (Xinhua) — Iran's Foreign Ministry on Sunday rejected accusations by Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raji that Tehran is interfering in Beirut's internal affairs, describing diplomatic relations between the countries as "centuries-old" and strong.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baghaei commented on the tensions during his weekly press conference. Earlier, Raji publicly alleged Iranian "interference," and media reports surfaced that he was blocking the inauguration of Iran's new ambassador to Beirut.

E. Baghaei emphasized that the exchange of ambassadors is proceeding as usual, adding that the new Lebanese envoy recently assumed his duties in Tehran. Regarding the Iranian ambassador in Beirut, he reported that Iran "has submitted the relevant requests and completed the necessary procedures." The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson expressed hope that the process "will proceed naturally."

Responding to Y. Raja's accusations, E. Baghaei stated that Iran refuses to engage in discussions that distract from Lebanon's national interests. He stated that the priority should be "defending Lebanon from Israel's ongoing crimes" and preserving its sovereignty. The Iranian diplomat called on Lebanese factions to prioritize dialogue to counter "Israeli domination."

Tensions between Iran and Lebanon erupted last month after Y. Raji posted on the social media site X, citing alleged warnings from Iranian officials about the consequences of disarming Hezbollah, which he viewed as foreign interference. Y. Raji reiterated his accusations in a recent interview with the Lebanese television channel MTV and invited his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, to meet in a third country.

A. Araghchi denied allegations of Iranian interference in Lebanon's internal affairs. He declined to meet in a third country, but welcomed dialogue to strengthen bilateral relations and invited Y. Raji to visit Iran. However, on December 10, the Lebanese Foreign Minister declined the invitation, continuing to insist on a neutral venue. On December 11, A. Araghchi wrote in X that his colleague's refusal to visit "raises confusion."
