Gaza, February 7 /Xinhua/ — The number of Palestinians killed in Israeli airstrikes since the outbreak of hostilities on October 7, 2023, has reached 72,027, while 171,651 have been wounded, the Gaza-based health ministry reported.

The ministry said in a press statement that 174 new deaths recorded between January 30 and February 6 were added to the official tally after approval by the relevant government committee.

The report added that since the ceasefire in Gaza came into effect on October 10 last year, 576 Palestinians have been killed and another 1,543 people have been injured.

A separate statement stressed that the remaining functioning hospitals in the Palestinian enclave, struggling to continue providing services, have effectively become waiting rooms for thousands of patients, with many of the wounded unsure what awaits them.

The war has made maintaining the healthcare system a daily struggle, seriously hampering the restoration and resumption of specialized medical services, the department noted.

The statement also warned that even basic painkillers have become a rare luxury due to shortages. It noted that 46 percent of essential medications, 66 percent of medical supplies, and 84 percent of laboratory and blood bank supplies have been completely depleted.

It is noted that areas such as cancer treatment, hematology, surgery, intensive care and primary health care have been hit hardest, and the limited resources available are far from being able to cover the existing demand. –0–

Beijing, February 7 (Xinhua) — China plays an important role in humanitarian efforts in the Middle East, and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) looks forward to deepening cooperation with China in this area in the future, a senior ICRC official said.

The ICRC's Regional Director for the Near and Middle East, Nicolas von Arx, made the statement in a recent interview with Xinhua in Beijing during his visit to China.

He said the situation in the region has been dire for some time now, with people forced to flee their homes and separate from their families, infrastructure destroyed, and access to basic services extremely limited.

N. von Arx said that he highly values China's role in humanitarian activities in the Middle East, noting that in recent years China has made an important contribution to providing humanitarian aid in both the Gaza Strip and Syria.

Last year, China provided $100 million in aid to Palestine to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and support recovery and reconstruction. Furthermore, following the powerful earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria in 2023, China also delivered humanitarian supplies to both countries.

N. von Arx expressed gratitude for China's support and cooperation with the ICRC and praised the country's respect for international humanitarian law. He recalled that in September 2024, China, five other countries, and the ICRC jointly launched a high-level global initiative to strengthen political commitment to international humanitarian law.

During his visit to China, N. von Arx held meetings with representatives of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and embassies, as well as with officials from various think tanks.

During a meeting with the Chinese government's special envoy to the Middle East, Zhai Jun, the two sides exchanged views on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, Syria, and Yemen.

N. von Arx also said the ICRC hopes to expand cooperation with China on humanitarian efforts in the Middle East. "I hope we can deepen this interaction," he said. "Whether through diplomatic missions, on the ground, or otherwise, I think this is a multi-layered relationship that we value and want to strengthen over time," the ICRC representative added.

BEIJING, February 7 (Xinhua) — The ratio of total social logistics expenditure to gross domestic product (GDP) in China fell to 13.9 percent, falling below 14 percent for the first time, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) reported on Saturday.

According to the agency, this indicator is 0.8 percentage points lower than the level at the end of the 13th five-year plan (2016-2020).

By 2027, China aims to reduce the ratio of social logistics costs to GDP to about 13.5 percent as part of efforts to improve overall economic efficiency.

TEHRAN, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Saturday that Iran's missile program "has never been and will never be a subject of negotiations" with the United States.

The Iranian Foreign Minister made the statement in an interview with Qatar's Al Jazeera television channel, excerpts of which were published in Persian on Saturday on its Telegram channel.

Commenting on the indirect talks between Iran and the United States held yesterday, which focused exclusively on the Iranian nuclear issue, A. Araghchi noted that they were a good "start," but that there is still a long way to go to build trust.

In recent months, the United States has called on Iran to curb its missile program, but Tehran has firmly rejected the demands.

"The missile program will never be negotiable, as it is a defense issue," the Iranian diplomat emphasized. "We hope to see this approach reflected in US policy," he added.

Recalling that the US and Israel failed to destroy Iran's nuclear potential even by bombing its nuclear facilities last June, A. Araghchi reaffirmed the country's "inalienable" right to continue enriching uranium on its own territory.

Speaking about the possibility of an attack by the United States, A. Araghchi noted that Iran is not capable of striking the territory of the United States, but it can target American bases in Western Asia.

The February 6 talks between US and Iranian delegations, led by US Special Presidential Envoy for the Middle East Steven Witkoff and A. Araghchi, marked a new diplomatic step amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington over the buildup of American military presence in the region.

Kyiv, February 7 (Xinhua) — The United States hopes to end the Russian-Ukrainian armed conflict by early summer. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made this statement, Ukrinform reported on Saturday, adding that Washington will likely pressure both sides to meet this deadline.

According to V. Zelensky, the United States wants to achieve peace by June, as Washington will have another priority in the summer: the congressional election campaign.

He also announced that Ukraine is proposing to the US a phased plan for the adoption of documents regarding the end of the armed conflict with Russia. This plan will allow everyone to understand "what the parties are agreeing to, at what point, and at what stages." –0–

Ski resorts in Moscow and the Moscow region: where to spend an active weekend

Winter is a great time to enjoy the outdoors, spend time actively with friends and family, and learn new sports. Moscow and the surrounding region offer numerous opportunities for skiing and snowboarding. Well-designed infrastructure, transportation accessibility, and extensive ski resort services make skiing enjoyable and comfortable.

Thanks to artificial snowmaking systems, the season lasts from December to March, depending on the weather. Elevation differences on the slopes range from 50 to 100 meters, and trail lengths range from 70 to 1,050 meters. This makes the ski resorts an excellent option for those just beginning to explore winter sports.

To access the ski lifts, you must pay a lift fee or purchase a special card called a ski pass. The cost of a ski pass depends on the size and popularity of the resort. At resorts in the Moscow region, prices start at 1,500 rubles and reach 4,000 rubles. Certain conditions apply: sometimes the ski pass is non-transferable, or there are restrictions on the number of lifts or time allowed.

The more lifts you purchase at once, the cheaper the price per lift. A day pass saves money for those who are ready to ski all day and take on multiple runs. A season pass is suitable for regular skiing at a chosen ski resort. If you plan to ski frequently at the same resort, purchasing a season pass is a very cost-effective solution. Beginner skiers, snowboarders, and those who prefer leisurely skiing with breaks at the café, without checking the clock, will find it more economical to purchase a number of lifts. For those with a high intensity of skiing, an hourly rate is more cost-effective.

"There are opportunities to ski for free. For example, a training slope might have a free lift. You can also hike up the mountain. Many snowboarders do this: their equipment is lighter and their boots are more comfortable than those of skiers," shared Marina Zhukova, professor at the Department of Management in International Business and Tourism Industry at the State University of Management.

Stepanovo Leonid Tyagachev Club Volen Yakhroma Tseleevo Sorochany

It's important to remember the rules of conduct on the slope, which will make your stay and the rest of those around you enjoyable, and most importantly, safe:

Your actions should not interfere with anyone. Choose a speed that is appropriate to your abilities, weather conditions, slope steepness, and congestion. Control your trajectory and remember: the one in front is right. Keep your distance when overtaking. Before starting or stopping, look up the slope. If you want to cross the slope, also look up. Choose a place to stop at the edge of the slope, gradually reducing speed. Do not stop on narrow sections of the slope, on its edge under a drop-off, behind a bend with visibility less than 15 meters, or other places where descending riders might not see you. If you need to go up a slope, do so only along its edge so that riders can see you and build a safe trajectory. Obey signs and trail markings. Provide all possible assistance to those in need.

We wish you a sharp edge and excellent glide!

Kyiv/Moscow, February 7 /Xinhua/ — On Saturday night, Russia launched another massive strike on Ukrainian energy facilities. First Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal announced this on Telegram.

He noted that the attack targeted 750 kV and 330 kV substations, which form the backbone of the Ukrainian power grid. Russia also shelled power generation facilities—the Burshtyn Thermal Power Plant and the Dobrotvir Thermal Power Plant in western Ukraine.

Across the country, 4.5-5 stages of emergency shutdown schedules have been applied, and in the eastern and northern regions, special emergency shutdown schedules have been applied.

The Ukrainian power grid operator, Ukrenergo, has requested emergency assistance from Poland.

As RIA Novosti reported on Saturday, citing the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Russian army launched a massive retaliatory strike, including with Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, against energy and transport infrastructure facilities used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as well as Ukrainian military-industrial complex enterprises.

“All designated targets have been hit,” the statement said. –0–

WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that U.S. talks with Russia and Ukraine are going "very well" and "something can happen" in resolving the nearly four-year-old conflict.

"We're doing very well in negotiations with Russia and Ukraine," Trump told reporters aboard his plane. "Something could happen."

The president did not provide further details.

The second round of US-brokered talks between Russia and Ukraine concluded Thursday in Abu Dhabi. The parties agreed on a large-scale prisoner exchange but failed to achieve significant progress on key issues such as territorial disputes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday that the next peace talks with US and Russian delegations will take place "in the near future, probably in the US." –0–
