With the support of Rosneft, 4 enclosures for polar bears with a total area of about 2.5 thousand square meters were equipped in the new complex of the Perm Zoo. Arctic predators named Seriku, Mila and Parma were transported from the old territory of the zoo to the modern enclosures.

Since 2013, Rosneft has been caring for all polar bears in Russian zoos – today there are 35 polar bears in 16 zoos in the country. The Company provides for the maintenance of the animals, their feeding, veterinary support, and also finances the renovation of the enclosures. With the support of the Company, special toys have been developed to increase the physical activity of the animals. In addition, Rosneft is implementing a program to rescue and rehabilitate young polar bears left in the wild without a mother. Since 2016, with the active support of the Company, six orphaned polar bear cubs have been rescued in the Russian sector of the Arctic.

The enclosures at the Perm Zoo for bears are equipped with air conditioners and pools in which polar bears can swim all year round. In addition, there is provision for heating water in winter and cooling it in summer, as well as generators for producing snow in the warm season.

The new territory of the zoo was opened on August 7 and is a modern complex that meets international standards for keeping wild animals. The total area of the natural landscape park is 25 hectares, which is 16 times larger than the area of the old zoo.

The male Seriku was rescued on Bely Island in Yamal, and the female bear Mila was born in the Kazan Zoo and then came to the Perm Zoo. At the end of 2024, Mila and Seriku had their first offspring – a female that Perm residents named Parma.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — Security guarantees for Kyiv could be formulated within the next 10 days, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday after talks with U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders in Washington.

“Our partners will probably ‘unpack’ security guarantees, and more and more details will emerge,” he said at a press briefing after meetings at the White House. Detailed agreements are expected to be formally set out in documents in the next seven to 10 days, Zelensky added.

“It is important that the United States sends a clear signal that it will be among the countries helping to coordinate actions and will also take part in security guarantees for Ukraine,” he noted.

On Monday, Trump told Zelensky that the United States would play a role in ensuring Ukraine's security as part of any agreement to end the conflict with Russia. He gave no other details.

Europe is the “first line of defense,” but “we are going to help them,” the White House chief noted.

According to the Ukrainian president, the guarantees include a package of American weapons. “Indeed, there is a package with our proposals in the amount of 90 billion US dollars,” he said. –0–

MEXICO CITY, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday that her government is exploring ways to increase energy independence and reduce dependence on the United States.

Speaking at a daily news conference, the president said Mexico relies heavily on "very cheap" natural gas from the United States and must move toward energy independence.

However, she warned that import contracts, some of which last up to 20 years, could not be breached.

K. Sheinbaum added that state oil company Petroleos Mexicanos has formed a working group, coordinated by the Mexican Petroleum Institute, to study less environmentally harmful options “to understand how we can strengthen energy self-sufficiency.”

Any final decisions should be “submitted to public scrutiny,” she said, adding that alternative methane sources, such as landfills and biomass, are also being explored to diversify national production. –0–

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — United Nations humanitarian agencies on Monday welcomed Israel's decision to lift a ban on asylum in the Gaza Strip, but warned that plans to step up military operations could seriously harm people already deprived of basic means of survival.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said the planned expansion of military operations in Gaza City would again displace several thousand people to a crowded area in the south of the Strip that is virtually devoid of basic infrastructure, including water, food and health care.

OCHA said there had been more than 780,000 new displacements since early March, when Israel's asylum ban came into effect. Existing shelters had fallen into disrepair or were abandoned due to repeated displacement orders.

Humanitarian partners estimate that at least 1.35 million people require urgent shelter and about 1.4 million require basic necessities.

“The situation in the Gaza Strip is beyond catastrophic. More deaths are being recorded every day amid ongoing fighting and acute hunger,” OCHA stressed.

The World Food Programme (WFP) said it was doing everything it could to provide food to the enclave's population, but supplies remained well below needs. Organized distribution, WFP-supported hot meals and bakeries would require a significant increase in humanitarian aid coming into Gaza.

“Unimpeded humanitarian access is essential throughout Gaza, including community-based distribution of aid and large-scale delivery of supplies through all possible crossings and land routes,” OCHA stressed. –0–

SHENZHEN, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — South China's Guangdong Province's foreign trade volume reached 2.58 trillion yuan (about 361.7 billion U.S. dollars) in the first seven months of 2025, ranking first among inland cities, local customs said Tuesday.

In July this year, Shenzhen's total import and export volume reached 415.94 billion yuan, up 6.2 percent year on year. In particular, exports totaled 255.62 billion yuan, setting a new record for monthly exports since the beginning of this year, up 4.7 percent year on year, while imports rose 8.8 percent to 160.32 billion yuan.

Shenzhen's export growth was driven by strong competitiveness in both traditional electronics and emerging strategic industries. In the first seven months, the export of electromechanical products reached 1.17 trillion yuan, accounting for 74.7 percent of Shenzhen's total exports.

Shenzhen's strategic emerging industries have shown strong growth. In January-July, the city's exports of lithium batteries and all-electric passenger vehicles rose 37.9 percent and 21.7 percent, respectively, while integrated circuit exports rose 40.9 percent.

In the first seven months of this year, Shenzhen's imports of electromechanical products grew 14.7 percent year-on-year, accounting for 82.1 percent of the city's total imports, with the total value reaching 836.56 billion yuan.

Private enterprises have played an important role in the development of Shenzhen's foreign trade. From January to July, their foreign trade turnover was 1.8 trillion yuan, or 69.8 percent of the city's total foreign trade. -0-
