Tbilisi, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — Georgia has announced an international tender to supervise the construction of an 11.3-km highway that will connect the country with Turkey, the main section of which will be a 7.6-km tunnel, the Georgian Roads Department said on Friday.

The project includes the construction of a traffic interchange, three bridges and a two-lane tunnel. After the tunnel, the route will connect to the existing international highway E70 at the Georgian-Turkish border, where the roadway will also be widened.

The tender announced by the Georgian side envisages supervision of construction works for 48 months. The estimated cost of supervision services is 14 million dollars.

The Georgian Roads Department noted that the implementation of the project will contribute to the improvement of cross-border logistics, increased road safety, and further strengthening of economic ties between Georgia and Turkey. –0–

JERUSALEM, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — Israel's prime minister's office on Friday rejected a UN-backed report confirming a famine in Gaza, saying it was an "outright lie."

"Israel does not have a policy of famine. Israel has a policy of preventing famine," Netanyahu's office said in a statement.

The document notes that since the start of the war in October 2023, Israel has allowed about 2 million tons of humanitarian aid into Gaza, which is approximately 1 ton per person.

The statement added that many aid trucks were looted before they reached distribution points, and Israel accused Hamas of stealing humanitarian aid to fund its military activities.

The office added that temporary supply disruptions were addressed through airdrops, sea shipments, secure transport routes and distribution centers operated by U.S. companies.

Meanwhile, famine has been confirmed in Gaza Governorate, which includes Gaza City, where more than half a million people are facing malnutrition, poverty and death in conditions of famine, according to a report released on Friday by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a multilateral initiative involving UN agencies and international non-governmental organizations. The report noted that the famine, first recorded in Gaza City, has now spread as far south as Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis.

IPC estimates that by the end of September, more than 640,000 people, or nearly a third of Gaza's population, will be in a catastrophic situation, with another 1.14 million facing extreme food insecurity.

According to Gaza health officials on Friday, 273 people, including 112 children, have died from hunger and malnutrition in the enclave since the war began. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — China urges the United States to immediately end the blockade and sanctions against Cuba under any pretext and do more to improve relations with the Cuban side and promote regional peace and stability, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a ministry press briefing on Friday.

As one of the journalists pointed out, the US State Department recently announced the introduction of visa restrictions on officials from African countries, Brazil, Cuba, Grenada, former officials of the Pan American Health Organization and their family members participating in the Cuban government’s medical missions abroad. It is noted that the United States intends to put an end to Cuban medical missions abroad as an exploitative practice of forced labor, and warns countries cooperating with Cuba to “think twice.”

Commenting on this information, Mao Ning noted that, according to Cuban government statistics, over the past 60 years, Cuba has sent over 600,000 medical workers to more than 60 countries, who have provided medical services to over 230 million people and performed over 17 million operations and surgical interventions, thereby saving the lives of over 12 million people.

She noted that Cuba's international medical cooperation plays an important role in the health systems of Latin American and Caribbean countries, as well as African countries, and is welcomed by both the governments and peoples of the respective countries.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said the so-called “forced labor” has become a false pretext and a hegemonic tool for the United States to suppress other countries, and the U.S. measures represent a continuation and strengthening of the more than 60-year-old unpopular sanctions and blockade against Cuba. –0–

The meeting, chaired by Premier of the State Council Li Qiang, heard reports on the progress of the above-mentioned programs and emphasized the need to further strengthen fiscal, tax and financial support policies, create innovative consumption and investment scenarios, improve conditions for them and take comprehensive measures to unlock the potential of domestic demand.

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — China resolutely protests to the U.S. side and calls on it to investigate and correct its mistakes in unreasonable interrogations, squalid treatment and deportation of Chinese students upon their entry into the United States, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Friday.

At a regular briefing for reporters, Mao Ning said China has made stern representations to the US side on every such case and promised to continue to take resolute measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of its citizens traveling to the US.

The United States has recently engaged in discriminatory, politically motivated and selective law enforcement measures against Chinese students arriving in the country, the spokeswoman said. Students have been subjected to unfair treatment and placed in small, isolated rooms for lengthy interrogations, she added.

Mao Ning noted that some students even had their visas cancelled and were denied entry after being told they “may pose a threat to national security.”

“The actions of the American side seriously violate the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens, hinder the movement of people between the two countries, and complicate Chinese-American humanitarian exchanges,” she stressed.

“We urge the United States to face this issue squarely, take China’s concerns seriously, act in accordance with the American leader’s statement on its readiness to welcome Chinese students and stop unreasonable interrogations, harassment and deportation of them,” Mao Ning concluded. –0–

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — China's gross early rice output will reach 28.52 million tonnes in 2025, up 340,000 tonnes or 1.2 percent from the previous year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Friday.

The average yield of early rice reached 400.8 kg per mu (about 0.067 hectares), exceeding the 400 kg mark for the first time, the department said. This marked a year-on-year increase of 1.5 percent, despite a slight decline in the total sown area of 0.3 percent.

NBS official Wei Fenghua attributed the growth to favorable weather conditions, a low incidence of natural disasters and effective policy support, including an increase in the minimum purchase price for early long-grain rice and incentives for major grain-producing counties.

The stable harvest of spring grains and increased production of early rice in China this year have laid a solid foundation for ensuring food security throughout the year and provided strong support for maintaining economic growth amid a complex and unfavorable international environment, the spokesperson said. –0–
