BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — The cargo volume through Ceke Port on the China-Mongolia border reached 20.019 million tons as of Sept. 8, up 18.5 percent year on year. The port reached its target of over 20 million tons 49 days earlier than last year, the Neimenggu Ribao newspaper reported, citing data from the Ceke Port Economic Development District Administration.

Ceke Port is located in Ejing Province, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, North China. It is an important transportation hub, trade center, cargo distribution center and resource channel in northwest China, connecting China with foreign countries.

Since the beginning of this year, positive dynamics of development have been maintained in coal imports via the Tseke checkpoint. The administration of this checkpoint, focusing on building an important bridgehead for expanding openness in the northern direction, has been constantly simplifying customs clearance procedures, which has laid a solid foundation for the growth of cargo transportation volumes.

At the same time, Tseke checkpoint is actively working with local customs joint control services and relevant departments of Mongolia to establish a real-time information exchange mechanism, effectively manage traffic flows through the border crossing, and combine enhanced supervision with improved services to ensure the safety and efficiency of customs clearance. -0-

CAIRO, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — Egypt on Sunday sent another humanitarian aid convoy from the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing towards the Kerem Shalom crossing for inspection by Israeli authorities before entering the Gaza Strip, Egyptian state television reported.

This is the 36th humanitarian aid convoy sent from Egypt to Gaza since July 27, organized by the Egyptian Red Crescent Society.

According to reports, the convoy carrying food (rice, pasta, flour and baby food), medicine and medical supplies left at dawn.

The previous convoy, No. 35, was sent out on Thursday and included mobile toilets for the first time to improve living conditions for displaced Palestinians whose homes were destroyed or damaged by Israeli strikes.

The aid also includes donations raised by residents of Egypt's Sinai region in support of Palestinians in Gaza, the statement said. The Egyptian Red Crescent Society is also coordinating with countries wishing to send aid to Gaza via Egypt.

Israel's military campaign in Gaza has killed 64,871 Palestinians and injured 164,610, as well as caused massive damage to infrastructure and worsened humanitarian conditions, according to updated figures released by Gaza health authorities on Sunday.

The government also said hunger and malnutrition in Gaza had killed 422 people, including 145 children, since the conflict between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, 2023.

Egypt has provided more than 70 percent of the total aid delivered to Gaza since the conflict began, with more than 550,000 tons of humanitarian aid transported in thousands of trucks, while some 5,000 trucks continue to wait /for entry permission from Israel/ on the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing, Egypt's Foreign Ministry said in August. –0–

KINSHASA, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — Vaccination against the Ebola virus has begun in the Bulape health zone in central Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where an outbreak was declared earlier this month, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Sunday.

The current phase of vaccination targets frontline health workers and people in contact with confirmed cases, the WHO said in a statement.

An initial shipment of 400 doses of the Ervebo vaccine, which protects against the Zaire ebolavirus variants behind the current outbreak, has arrived in Bulapé, one of the epicenters of the outbreak in Kasai province. About 45,000 doses are expected to arrive in the coming days, according to the WHO.

The outbreak can be contained if measures are taken within the next two weeks, WHO programme spokesman Patrick Otim told a press briefing in Geneva on Friday. He said there were 1,500 more doses of vaccine available in the capital, Kinshasa, which would be used once the ultra-cold storage system was operational.

The country has at least 68 suspected cases, including 16 deaths, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, which gave an online briefing on Thursday. The WHO said on Friday that 25 cases had been confirmed.

The epicentre of the outbreak is located near Tshikapa, the capital of Kasai province, approximately 100-200 km from the border with Angola. The outbreak is currently confined to a remote rural area, but frequent population movements between Bulapé and Tshikapa increase the risk of wider spread.

This is the 16th Ebola outbreak recorded in the DRC since 1976. Kasai province previously reported Ebola outbreaks in 2007 and 2008, according to the WHO. –0–

Brazil's democracy and sovereignty 'non-negotiable': president

NEW YORK, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva spoke out against the Donald Trump administration's imposition of 50 percent tariffs on Brazilian goods and defended the country's democratic institutions and other policies in an op-ed published in the New York Times on Saturday.

While reaffirming Brazil's openness to negotiations "on everything that can bring mutual benefit," L.I. Lula da Silva stressed that "democracy and Brazil's sovereignty cannot be the subject of negotiations."

In an article titled “Brazilian Democracy and Sovereignty Are Not Negotiable,” the president wrote that while the United States has its own legitimate goals, such as reindustrialization, the use of unilateral tariffs is “misguided” and “illogical.”

L.I. Lula da Silva noted that over the past 15 years, Washington has recorded a positive balance in trade in goods and services with Brazil in the amount of 410 billion US dollars, with almost three quarters of its exports being imported duty-free to Brazil.

He accused the US government of “using tariffs and the Magnitsky Act to ensure impunity for former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro,” who was sentenced on Thursday to more than 27 years in prison for attempting a coup, arguing that the measures have “no economic justification” and are politically motivated.

The Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act allows Washington to impose sanctions, including asset freezes, credit card cancellations and travel bans, on foreign nationals accused of human rights abuses or corruption.

Addressing accusations of digital censorship, L.I. Lula da Silva noted that in Brazil, all platforms are subject to the same laws, and that these regulations are aimed at protecting Brazilians from fraud, disinformation, and hate speech. He also defended Brazil's instant payment system PIX, which he believes promotes financial inclusion.

Rebutting U.S. accusations that Brazil is not complying with environmental laws, the president noted that over the past two years, the Brazilian government has halved the rate of deforestation in the Amazon.

“There are no ideological differences that could prevent the two governments from working together in areas where they have common goals,” L.I. Lula da Silva said, adding that Brazil and the United States “are capable of respecting each other and cooperating for the benefit of Brazilians and Americans.” –0–
