Netanyahu at UN: Israel 'must finish what it started', Iranian threat eliminated, but struggle continues

At the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a long and emotional speech that focused on the October 7 attacks, the military operation in Gaza, and a call for world leaders to maintain pressure on Iran and its allies.

Victory over the "axis of terror"

The Israeli prime minister said his country had dealt a crushing blow over the past year to groups linked to Tehran, from Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon to the Houthis in Yemen and the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.

"We have destroyed Iran's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs… We have removed the existential threat to Israel and the civilized world," Netanyahu said, thanking US President Donald Trump for his "decisive action" in the joint operation to destroy Iran's uranium enrichment facilities.

He stressed that Iran's enriched uranium stockpiles must be destroyed and Security Council sanctions against Tehran must be reinstated to prevent the restoration of its nuclear potential.

We remember October 7th

Netanyahu devoted much of his speech to the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, calling it "the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust."

"1,200 people were killed, 40 Americans and citizens of dozens of countries. They chopped off heads, raped women, burned children alive… Hamas took more than 250 people hostage, including Holocaust survivors and their grandchildren," he said.

According to him, Israel has returned 107 hostages, but 48 remain in Gaza. The prime minister addressed them directly from the General Assembly podium in Hebrew and English, assuring them: "We will not give up and we will not give up until we bring you all home." Netanyahu said his speech at the General Assembly can be heard in Gaza today. The prime minister also added that Hamas leaders will receive his address on their mobile phones thanks to the efforts of Israeli intelligence.

Response to critics and accusations

The Israeli leader rejected accusations of genocide and deliberate starvation of Gazan civilians: "We have sent more than two million tons of food to Gaza—three thousand calories a day for every person. If people are starving, it's only because Hamas is stealing food and selling it to finance the war."

He emphasized that the Israeli military had warned civilians in advance of the offensive and was "doing everything to minimize civilian casualties, something no one has ever done in the history of urban warfare."

Against recognition of a Palestinian state

Netanyahu sharply criticized several Western countries for recognizing Palestinian statehood, saying the move "rewards terrorists" and only escalates violence.

"The Palestinians never believed in a two-state solution. They want a state not next to Israel, but instead of Israel," he said, adding that 99 of the 120 Knesset members voted against imposing a Palestinian state on Israel.

A chance for peace with neighbors

At the end of his speech, the prime minister noted that Israel's victory over Hamas and Iran's allies opens up prospects for peace negotiations with Syria and Lebanon and the expansion of the Abraham Accords with Arab countries.

"Our victory will mean that tomorrow many of those fighting against us will simply be gone, replaced by peacekeepers. This will happen in Iran too," he said.

Netanyahu's speech was accompanied by a QR code displaying footage of the October 7 attacks, and was met with thunderous applause from some delegations and demonstrative walking out of the hall by others.

Tbilisi, September 26 (Xinhua) — A scientific conference in honor of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War was held at Tbilisi State University on Thursday. Around 100 representatives from Georgian universities, think tanks, and media outlets participated in the conference.

The academic conference was jointly organized by the Chinese Embassy in Georgia, the Center for China and Southeast Asian Studies, and Tbilisi State University. Chinese Ambassador to Georgia Zhou Qian, Rector of Tbilisi State University Jaba Samushia, and Director of the Center for China and Southeast Asian Studies Beka Natsvlishvili attended the event and delivered remarks.

In his speech, Chinese Ambassador to Georgia Zhou Qian comprehensively covered the enormous sacrifices and historic contribution of the Chinese people to the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War. He emphasized that the Global Governance Initiative, proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, has contributed Chinese wisdom and approaches to improving global governance.

According to him, China intends to join Georgia and other countries in upholding the results of World War II, international justice and equality, and jointly building a community with a shared future for humanity.

Tbilisi State University Rector Jaba Samushia stated at the conference that the Japanese "Unit 731" committed atrocities in China, causing enormous suffering to the civilian population. Today, China has freed itself from aggression and oppression and has achieved internationally recognized success in socio-economic development and scientific and technological innovation. Georgia is ready to learn from China's development experience.

Beka Natsvlishvili, Director of the Center for China and Southeast Asian Studies, noted that China made a significant contribution to the resistance against the Japanese fascist invasion and to achieving final victory in World War II. Research on the history of World War II should not be limited to the European theater of war; more attention should be paid to the Eastern Front, China's sacrifices, and its contribution.

Tbilisi State University also hosted a photo exhibition dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. –0–

Jerusalem, September 26 (Xinhua) — Around 700,000 Palestinians have fled Gaza City amid Israeli ground and air strikes on the enclave's largest urban center, the Israeli military announced Thursday.

Israeli army spokesman Efi Defrin told reporters that "around 700,000 residents have been evacuated" since mid-August, when Israel launched a new attack on Gaza City. He said they have relocated to the so-called "humanitarian zone" in the southern Gaza Strip, without specifying the source of the data.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Thursday that some 388,400 displacements were recorded between August 14 and September 23, mostly from Gaza City towards Khan Younis and Deir el-Balah, areas projected to face famine by the end of September, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).

According to E. Devrin, five ground operations divisions are active throughout the Gaza Strip, three of which are striking Gaza City and "strengthening control." Since mid-August, Israeli forces have carried out more than 2,000 strikes on "terrorist targets" in the area, he said, adding that the Air Force is carrying out approximately 200 strikes per day using fighter jets, drones, and helicopters.

Meanwhile, E. Defrin noted that the Israeli Navy is preparing to block the Global Sumud Flotilla, a group of approximately 50 vessels scheduled to reach Gaza. He accused the flotilla of being organized and financed by Hamas, stating that Israel has "unequivocal evidence," but did not provide any.

Baku, September 26 /Xinhua/ — Relations between Azerbaijan and China have entered a qualitatively new stage of development, and bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation holds great prospects. This was stated by Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev on Thursday at a reception organized by the Chinese Embassy in Azerbaijan in honor of the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

In his speech, he stated that the bilateral relations agenda is quite broad and cooperation is developing successfully in economic and trade, transport and logistics, energy, agriculture, digital, humanitarian, tourism, and other areas.

"China is one of Azerbaijan's main economic and trade partners. At the same time, Azerbaijan is China's largest trading partner in the South Caucasus. In the first seven months of this year, trade between our countries increased by 26 percent," he said.

Sh. Mustafayev noted that bilateral investment cooperation is also expanding. From 1995 to the first half of 2025, direct investment from China to Azerbaijan amounted to $942.3 million, while Azerbaijan invested a total of $2.1 billion in China.

At the reception, Chinese Ambassador to Azerbaijan Lu Mei stated that under the strategic leadership of the two heads of state, China and Azerbaijan have established a comprehensive strategic partnership, and Chinese-Azerbaijani relations have reached a new level, becoming an example of mutual trust, equality, and friendly cooperation between the countries.

According to her, practical cooperation is a solid foundation of relations between China and Azerbaijan, and both countries have made due contributions to maintaining the stability of global production and supply chains.

“In the first seven months of this year, trade and investment between China and Azerbaijan reached a record level, and a new record is expected to be set by the end of 2025,” she said.

Bilateral cooperation within the Belt and Road Initiative has also yielded fruitful results. By the end of this year, the number of China-Europe trans-Caspian container train departures transiting through Azerbaijan is expected to double compared to last year, she added.

Vilnius, September 26 (Xinhua) — The Seimas (parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania approved the composition of the 20th government on Thursday. The coalition government was formed by the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (SDPL), the Dawn over the Nemunas party, the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union (LFGU), and the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Christian Families Union.

The new cabinet's program was adopted by 80 votes in favor, 40 against, and two abstentions.

Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė and the ministers took the oath of office shortly after the vote and immediately assumed their duties.

"With this government program, we clearly state that we want to strengthen the public sector, listen to public opinion, promote social dialogue, and solve problems through dialogue," I. Ruginienė stated in the Saeima. "We want to increase defense investments, which we have already demonstrated and will continue to do. We want to create a solid social foundation for every citizen of the country. We want wages to grow, for our seniors to live with dignity, and for vulnerable groups to have a much better life."

The program calls for increasing defense spending to 5% of GDP and promises no new taxes for the duration of the program, with the exception of a planned financial stability levy on banks, the details of which are still being discussed. It also includes a freeze on excise taxes on diesel fuel, while excise taxes on tobacco, e-cigarettes, and alcohol will increase at a faster rate.

The new ruling coalition, which controls 82 of the 141 seats in the Seimas, was formed in August following the resignation of former Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas. –0–
