UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) — The U.N. Security Council on Friday failed to adopt a resolution seeking to extend the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), for six months to allow time for diplomacy.

The draft resolution, introduced by China and Russia, received four votes in favor and nine against, with two abstentions, falling short of the required nine votes for approval.

If passed, the resolution would extend the nuclear deal between Iran and the six countries (the UK, Germany, China, Russia, France and the US), as well as Security Council Resolution 2231, which approved the agreement, for another six months, preventing the automatic renewal of UN sanctions against Iran under the snapback mechanism.

The results of Friday's vote exactly matched those of September 19, when a similar draft resolution introduced by the Republic of Korea in its capacity as UN Security Council president was rejected.

On Friday, the document was supported by Algeria, China, Pakistan, and Russia. Guyana and the Republic of Korea abstained. The remaining nine Security Council members voted against.

The United Kingdom, France, and Germany—the three European countries participating in the JCPOA—announced that they had triggered the sanctions snapback mechanism on August 28, notifying the Security Council of Tehran's "non-compliance." UN, September 27 /Xinhua/ — Iran's cooperation agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will be invalidated if UN sanctions are reinstated, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced on Friday.

XI'AN, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) — All three workers trapped in a coal mine accident were found dead early Saturday in Zhenping County, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, the local emergency response headquarters said.

A section of an underground roadway at a coal mine in Zhenping County, Ankang, collapsed on Thursday, trapping three people. At the time of the accident, eight workers were performing repairs to restore coal production. According to Zhenping County authorities, five of them were safely rescued.

As of 1:20 a.m. on September 27, three trapped workers had been rescued, but medical personnel said all three were confirmed dead after on-site examination.

The mine, built in 1998, has been undergoing safety improvements in coal mining since March 2024.

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) — Many delegates walked out of the United Nations General Assembly hall on Friday in protest during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech.

In his speech at the general debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, he criticized the countries that recently announced their recognition of the State of Palestine. JIUQUAN, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) — China successfully launched the Fengyun-3 08 satellite into space from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China on Saturday.

The Fengyun-3 08 satellite was launched by the Long March-4C carrier rocket at 3:28 a.m. Beijing time and successfully entered its planned orbit.

The satellite, equipped with nine remote sensing instruments, including a medium-resolution imaging spectrometer and a microwave imager, will primarily be used for monitoring and research activities in the fields of weather forecasting, atmospheric chemistry and climate change, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA).
