CHANGCHUN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — Former Chinese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Tang Renjian was sentenced to death on Sunday with a two-year reprieve for accepting large-scale bribes.

According to the verdict handed down by the Intermediate People's Court of Changchun City, Jilin Province (northeast China), Tang Renjian, who also served as secretary of the Party Group of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, was deprived of his political rights for life. All his personal property, as well as any illegal income, will be confiscated and retained by the state.

Between 2007 and 2024, Tang Renjian, while holding various positions at both the central and local levels, was found to have abused his official position to assist relevant organizations and individuals in matters such as business operations, project contracting, and personnel reshuffles. In exchange, he received financial or material benefits totaling over 268 million yuan (approximately $38 million).

The court believes that Tang Renjian should be sentenced to death for his crimes, which caused serious harm to the interests of the state and the people. However, given his admission of guilt, the return of his illicit proceeds, and other mitigating circumstances, the court expressed leniency in its final decision.

The case was heard in court on July 25. During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence implicating the defendant in the crimes. The defendant and his lawyers reviewed the evidence, after which the parties held closing arguments. In his final statement, Tang Renjian admitted his guilt and expressed remorse for his actions.

BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — China's total length of offshore oil and gas pipelines has exceeded 10,000 kilometers, marking a comprehensive leap in the development of engineering technology and equipment manufacturing in the country's offshore sector, the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) said Sunday.

Since the implementation of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), more than 1,500 kilometers of offshore pipelines have been laid in the country, with the maximum operating depth reaching 1,542 meters. China has achieved a transition from shallow-water to ultra-deepwater operations in terms of oil and gas pipeline construction, CNOOC noted.

CNOOC, the country's largest offshore oil and gas producer, said it has collaborated with domestic universities, research institutes and enterprises across the industrial chain to develop original technological innovations since 2021.

Today, the diameters of offshore oil and gas pipelines range from 2 to 48 inches, placing China at the forefront of global pipeline technology and equipment.

In the future, CNOOC will continue to enhance its core technological capabilities for offshore pipeline projects, promote the application of domestically produced equipment, and accelerate the intelligent and digital transformation of the industry.

Bogota, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — Colombian President Gustavo Petro said on Saturday that the U.S. decision to revoke his visa underscores that New York may no longer be suitable for hosting the United Nations headquarters.

The US decision violated the principle of immunity that underlies the work of the UN, said G. Petro, while calling for respect for international law.

On Friday, G. Petro joined a pro-Palestinian demonstration outside the UN headquarters in New York, where he called on American soldiers not to turn their weapons against humanity.

"Don't obey Trump's orders! Obey the dictates of humanity!" he said.

In response, the US State Department announced on social media that same day that it was “revoking Petro’s visa due to his reckless and inflammatory actions.”

On Saturday, G. Petro announced on social media that he no longer had a US visa, adding: “I don’t care.”

“There is complete immunity for presidents who attend the UN General Assembly,” he wrote in X.

The Colombian president also criticized Washington for barring Palestinian representatives from the UN General Assembly and reiterated his call on the international community to stop the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
