TEHRAN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — Iran's Foreign Ministry said Sunday it considers the actions of France, Britain and Germany, known as the E3 group, and the United States to reinstate UN Security Council sanctions resolutions against Tehran "illegal and unjustified."

The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced this in a statement made several hours after UN sanctions against Iran came back into force 10 years after they were lifted under the 2015 deal on Iran's nuclear program, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), concluded between Iran and world powers.

The statement said Iran “rejects the E3 and the United States’ claims of reinstating previous resolutions that were terminated by resolution 2231 (which supported the JCPOA) in 2015, and emphasizes that UN member states, including Iran, have no obligations under the provisions and mechanisms of the abrogated resolutions.”

The Iranian Foreign Ministry also called on all countries to refrain from recognizing the “illegal situation that is contrary to UN Security Council Resolution 2231” and accused the EU3 and the US of “abusing” the dispute resolution mechanism under the JCPOA and Resolution 2231.

According to the statement, Iran will firmly defend its rights and national interests, and any steps aimed at undermining these interests “will meet an adequate and decisive response.”

Last month, the E3 formally launched a snapback mechanism that allows UN sanctions to be reinstated within 30 days if Iran is found to be in violation of the JCPOA.

On September 19, the UN Security Council rejected a resolution that would have extended Iran's sanctions waiver under the JCPOA. A subsequent resolution, which would have extended both the JCPOA and Resolution 2231 for six months, was also rejected by the UN Security Council on September 26. On the evening of September 27, sanctions were reimposed against Iran.

Gaza, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — Palestinian Hamas on Sunday denied receiving new proposals from mediators for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

In its press release, Hamas said ceasefire talks had stalled after “the failed assassination attempt on September 9 in the Qatari capital,” referring to the Israeli attack on the group’s office in Doha, in which one of the victims was a Qatari security officer.

Hamas reaffirmed its readiness to consider “positively and responsibly” any proposals put forward by the mediators, but in a way that preserves the national rights of the Palestinian people.

The statement came after international media reported on US President Donald Trump's new 21-point proposal to end the war in the Gaza Strip.

The proposal reportedly calls for the movement to hand over all hostages, both living and dead, within 48 hours and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip. Israel must also release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held for security reasons, allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza, and ensure the establishment of an interim Palestinian government of technocrats to govern the coastal enclave without any involvement from Hamas.

The global governance initiative emerged amid negative trends in Western policy. Belarus supports this initiative, according to the Belarusian Foreign Minister.

Minsk, September 28 (Xinhua) — In a world where Western policies have generated numerous negative trends over the past quarter century, it's entirely fitting that Chinese President Xi Jinping's initiative on global governance has emerged, a timely initiative Belarus fully supports. This was stated by Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov during his speech at the plenary session of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The Belarusian Foreign Ministry released the information on Saturday.

M. Ryzhenkov noted that over the past quarter century, Western policies have generated numerous wars, chaos, and millions of refugees, created barriers to international trade, undermined global food security, and entrenched poverty, hunger, and inequality. Meanwhile, international organizations, primarily the UN and the World Trade Organization, have been sidelined.

According to him, this is precisely why, as a reaction to these negative trends, the idea of regionalization is becoming popular, and cooperation mechanisms not associated with Western countries are growing and strengthening, such as BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Eurasian Economic Union, the League of Arab States, and the African Union.

"These structures reflect the interests of the global majority countries and operate on the principles of mutual respect, equality, and consensus, not domination and plunder. They essentially form a fair, multipolar economic development architecture. And it's entirely logical that Chinese President Xi Jinping's very timely initiative on global governance, which Belarus fully supports, has emerged," Ryzhenkov emphasized.

During his speech, the Belarusian Foreign Minister noted that the theme of this year's general political debate is dedicated to the UN anniversary—"Working Together: 80 Years of Joint Work for Peace, Development, and Human Rights, and the Way Forward." In this regard, he suggested recalling the events of 80 years ago. "Eight decades ago, a bloody and merciless war ended, a huge tragedy for all of humanity. And only at the cost of millions of lives and broken destinies did we overcome this challenge," the Belarusian diplomat stated.

At the same time, as M. Ryzhenkov pointed out, only 80 years of peaceful life have passed in Europe, and the West has developed its own "truth" about the events of those years. "Memory is being erased, monuments are being torn down, history textbooks are being rewritten. Once again, we hear Nazi slogans and slogans on the streets of certain European cities," he noted.

The Belarusian Foreign Minister emphasized that if history is being rewritten, then its results are also being rewritten, and the validity of the post-war world order, based on the universal principles of the UN, is being called into question. "And today we cannot remain silent about this. We remember the hundreds of villages burned by the Nazis along with their inhabitants, we remember the millions of Belarusians torn to pieces and mutilated, and the hundreds of thousands of women and children driven into European slavery. Therefore, we understand that preserving memory is important to prevent history from repeating itself," concluded M. Ryzhenkov.

CHANGCHUN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — China opened a new high-speed railway on Sunday that will significantly cut travel time from Beijing to the famous Changbai Mountain in northeast China's Jilin Province, boosting winter sports and ice and snow tourism in the country.

This line connects Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province, with Changbaishan Station in Antu County, Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, Jilin Province. Trains are designed to travel at 350 km/h. It will reduce travel time from Beijing to the Changbaishan mountain region, a popular winter tourism destination with several world-class ski resorts, to 4 hours and 33 minutes, saving approximately one and a half hours.

For passenger convenience, the distance between seats on trains running along this line has been increased by 5 cm to facilitate boarding and disembarking passengers carrying ski equipment. The intelligent temperature control system has been improved to reduce discomfort from indoor and outdoor temperature fluctuations in winter and spring. Stations along the route are equipped with one-stop tourist service counters offering services such as ticket booking for the Changbai Mountain Scenic Area and self-drive travel itineraries along the G331 National Highway.

Since the aforementioned railway route passes through the Changbai Mountains, 77 percent of the route is laid on bridges or through tunnels. Builders overcame the challenges of extremely low temperatures and complex geological conditions by using domestic equipment and frost-resistant materials. During construction, they also prioritized the protection of key wildlife habitats, such as the Manchurian tiger and Chinese yew. Jilin Province, located between 40 and 50 degrees north latitude, is considered one of China's premier ice and snow tourism destinations. Its snow and ice infrastructure is suitable for skiers of all skill levels. From November 2024 to March 2025, it welcomed 170 million tourists from various parts of China, a 35 percent increase year-on-year. -0-

The snapback mechanism is a "trap" for Iran, says Russia's Foreign Minister.

UN, September 28 /Xinhua/ – The snapback mechanism is a trap for Iran, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Saturday.

This mechanism was included in UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which approved the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, following direct negotiations between the Iranian Foreign Minister and the then US Secretary of State, Lavrov told reporters.

In essence, the mechanism allowed any country to put a resolution to a vote to maintain the sanctions-lifting regime, he noted, adding that even a single member of the UN Security Council with veto power could block such a resolution, which would mean there would be no extension of the sanctions lifting.

Iran agreed to it because it did not expect the US to withdraw from the deal in 2018, noted Sergei Lavrov, who took part in the negotiations on the deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

After the US withdrawal from the JCPOA, Europe, instead of demanding Washington return to its obligations, also began to shirk its commitments under the deal. Now, the Europeans are selectively taking only what benefits them from Resolution 2231, said Sergey Lavrov.

According to him, the mechanism was created as a trap for Iran and is further evidence that Tehran had no intention of violating its obligations under the nuclear deal.

On Friday, the UN Security Council failed to adopt a resolution drafted by China and Russia that would have extended the JCPOA and Resolution 2231.

S. Lavrov warned against initiating the process of reinstating sanctions against Iran, noting that this would deal a serious blow to the authority and credibility of the UN.

According to him, Iran has recently held talks with the European troika. However, their results only confirmed that the Europeans had been trying to find any excuse to reinstate sanctions from the very beginning.

The European Union's three-party bloc recently announced that it had activated the snapback mechanism, notifying the Security Council on August 28 of Iran's "significant non-compliance."

However, the legality of this move was questioned, as the troika bypassed the Dispute Settlement Mechanism provided for in the nuclear deal and Resolution 2231. –0–

Yaoundé, September 28 (Xinhua) — The presidential race officially began in Cameroon on Saturday. Twelve candidates, including one woman, are vying for the country's highest office.

The campaign will last two weeks and will culminate with the presidential elections on October 12.

Incumbent President Paul Biya, leader of the ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement, is seeking to win another seven-year term to extend his 43-year rule.

Joshua Osih, a candidate for the leading opposition Social Democratic Front, has launched his campaign in Bamenda, the main city in the English-speaking North-West region, which has been plagued by armed conflict involving separatists since 2017.

Separatist militants have imposed a month-long lockdown to disrupt elections in the war-torn English-speaking Northwest and Southwest regions, where they seek to establish an independent state.

JINAN, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) — Qufu, the hometown of Confucius in east China's Shandong Province, held events Sunday to commemorate the 2,576th anniversary of the birth of the ancient Chinese philosopher.

The Confucius worship ceremony began around 9:00 a.m. Participants, wearing yellow ribbons, laid baskets of flowers at the statue of Confucius. Shandong Provincial People's Government Chairman Zhou Naixiang delivered a eulogy, and everyone present bowed before the statue. The ceremony lasted about an hour.

To enhance the global impact of the Confucius Ceremony, an online broadcast was also conducted alongside the offline event, allowing people around the world to connect with Confucianism.

The tradition of worshiping Confucius began in 478 BC, a year after the philosopher's death. The ceremony held on this occasion includes traditional music, dance, and other ceremonial forms, embodying the essence of etiquette in Confucian culture.

The Confucius Worship Ceremony has become one of the key events planned for the 2025 China International Confucian Culture Festival.

As an educator and philosopher, Confucius (551-479 BC) founded the school of thought known as Confucianism, which greatly influenced subsequent generations. He was also the first person in China to establish private schools that recruited students from diverse social classes. -0-
