St. Petersburg, October 13 /Xinhua/ — Despite all the challenges, China achieved tremendous economic growth and unlocked the potential of domestic demand during the implementation of its 14th Five-Year Plan from 2021 to 2025. Irina Kokushkina, Associate Professor of the Department of World Economy at St. Petersburg State University, stated this in an interview with Xinhua.

She noted that from 2021 to 2024, China's economy grew by an average of 5.5 percent annually. More than 86 percent of the country's gross domestic product growth was driven by domestic demand. Investment in research and development has increased significantly. Significant progress has been made in developing green technologies.

"China's development is an example of how determination in pursuing goals bears fruit. China is building a society for the benefit of its people," I. Kokushkina emphasized.

In her opinion, China is not afraid of expanding its openness to the outside world and is pursuing a multi-vector policy to strengthen its global influence. This is evident both in the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative and in its active participation in various associations, such as BRICS and the SCO.

"In the next five years, China's domestic development will be largely linked to its global development and significance. Only a strong and self-sufficient China will be able to take its place in the global arena. Therefore, China has set the goal of becoming a self-sufficient and independent economy. In today's turbulent world, it is important to be able to rely on one's own strengths while ensuring economic growth," the Russian expert concluded.

With Rosneft's support, the first stage of research into valuable fish species in the Yenisei River has been completed. Leading scientists from the Lomonosov Moscow State University Marine Research Center, the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Company's Arctic Research Center participated in the expedition to the Taimyr Peninsula. The work was carried out as part of the company's Tamura corporate environmental program.

The Tamura project, which launched in 2024, aims to update information on the status of key animal species in the Far North. Scientists are studying the Kara subpopulation of polar bears, wild reindeer, and valuable bird and fish species in western Taimyr. The program will run until 2027.

The first phase of ichthyofauna research involved a comprehensive survey, including assessing the population status of the most valuable fish species and the environmental conditions of their habitats. Scientists covered more than 600 km of the Yenisei River estuary, including its most important and major tributaries—the Bolshaya Kheta, Pelyatka, Dudinka, Tanalau, and Muksunikha rivers.

Biological analysis of fish such as muksun, whitefish, Arctic omul, and vendace was conducted in the ship's laboratory. Scientists measured their weight and size and studied their feeding habits. The selection of study sites was based on an analysis of ichthyological and hydrobiological research from the last 90 years.

Further office processing of the samples is planned to obtain data on the age characteristics of the fish population in the Yenisei River estuary, as well as additional information on their feeding habits. Furthermore, specialists will conduct chemical analysis of water and bottom sediment samples from the fish habitats.

The second phase of fish research is planned for 2026. Scientists will assess the state of the region's ichthyofauna populations at various stages of their life cycle, including feeding and spawning. The research will also include a biological analysis of the Yenisei's most abundant and valuable fish species, such as muksun, broad whitefish, and nelma.

Rosneft places special emphasis on preserving biodiversity and is implementing the largest comprehensive Arctic exploration program since Soviet times. Over the past 13 years, nearly 60 expeditions have been conducted, during which scientists have studied the region's hydrometeorological, geological, and biological features. This has allowed them to collect a unique array of information on the Arctic's climate, natural environment, and wildlife.

Participants of the championship

The in-person round of the first All-Russian Case Championship in Transport Logistics concluded at St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (SPbGASU). Eight teams of fourth-year students majoring in logistics and transport solved three practical cases from industry partners.

Vice-Rector for Youth Policy Marina Malyutina emphasized that case championships have become commonplace at SPbGASU. The university has been using this format for over ten years, creating a platform for interaction between business representatives and students. Marina Viktorovna compared case championships to a tuning fork for assessing the quality of education – they allow one to assess how well educational programs meet the needs of the labor market.

The teams were assigned cases by lottery. They had 45 minutes to solve and graphically present their answers. They then presented their answers to the jury.

Tatyana Komarova, Head of the Transportation Department at St. Petersburg State Unitary Enterprise "Passazhiravtotrans," presented a case study in the "Transport Organization" category. The assignment was to develop an efficient transportation system for guests of a major music festival held over three days at the Igora Drive circuit. The challenge was unique in that spectators arrive gradually and depart simultaneously. To solve the problem, the students used a combined system (rail and shuttle buses).

A case study in the "Courier Delivery" category was presented by Alexey Chudov, Head of Vertical Operations Development at Petrovich Construction Trading House. The students worked on a small-size cargo delivery model, managed risks, and created an optimal solution from a technical perspective.

Anton Valshin, Deputy General Director for Transportation at Tretiy Park Joint-Stock Company, presented a case study in the "New Route" category. The speaker described the situation: Tretiy Park JSC plans to open a new route and utilize its current fleet. The students were asked to consider how to implement this plan most effectively.

Our university's team, "ADF – Road to the Future," won the "Transfer Organization" category. Team captain Ksenia Shatokhina described the strengths of the solution: "We ensured there were enough parking spaces for everyone and everyone was happy. We selected the optimal route, the number and ratio of different modes of transport, and developed a schedule to avoid traffic congestion and passenger congestion."

Ksenia Nuzhnaya, the SPbGASU team's mentor and senior lecturer in the Department of Transport Systems and Road and Bridge Construction, noted the benefits of the case championship: "The students strengthened their theoretical foundation by completing practical assignments. They learned about the challenges and problems facing businesses in their fields of study. They gained valuable experience and additional knowledge. All of this will definitely help them in their job search and interviews."

Sergey Maevsky, chairman of the jury and advisor to the general director for technical issues at St. Petersburg State Unitary Enterprise "Passazhiravtotrans," noted the high level of the participants. According to Sergey Vasilyevich, some of the answers were unexpected and creative.

The contestants enjoyed the opportunity to receive feedback, interact with company representatives, and explore future jobs. They also enjoyed a tour of St. Petersburg's historic center and a visit to the ABZ-1 facility, the company whose case they had solved in the remote round.

Moscow, October 13 /Xinhua/ — Russia expects all agreements on the Gaza Strip reached at the "peace summit" in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, to be implemented, and that US President Donald Trump and regional leaders will ensure an immediate ceasefire. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday at a meeting with journalists from Arab countries in Moscow.

"I hope that all agreements will be fulfilled, although we are hearing statements from both Hamas and Tel Aviv that not everything is over yet and that the crisis could recur," TASS quoted the minister as saying.

Sergey Lavrov believes the "peace summit" in Sharm el-Sheikh is the result of a compromise. "The initiators proposed a compromise, and now we must not tempt fate, but strictly implement everything proposed, which will help stop the bloodshed, resolve humanitarian issues, and begin the reconstruction of Gaza," he said, noting that it is necessary to begin developing a plan for the creation of a Palestinian state without delay.

The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the provisions regarding the West Bank in US President Donald Trump's plan to resolve the Gaza crisis must be specified. "We noted that Donald Trump's peace plan only addresses the Gaza Strip. It mentions statehood, but in rather general terms. These approaches must be specified, including determining what will happen in the West Bank," he said.

S. Lavrov emphasized that Russia, like the overwhelming majority of members of the international community, remains committed to UN decisions, which call for the creation of a full-fledged Palestinian state within the 1967 borders. –0–

Moscow, October 13 /Xinhua/ — Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on Monday the arrest of four individuals who planned to detonate a powerful homemade bomb to assassinate a high-ranking military officer. One of the detainees, a native of a Central Asian country, was involved in the murder of Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of the Russian Armed Forces' radiation, chemical, and biological defense forces.

According to a report from the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), a sabotage and terrorist attack against a high-ranking officer of the Russian Ministry of Defense was planned by Ukrainian special services in conjunction with the leaders of the international terrorist organization Islamic State (IS).

"As a result of the measures taken in Moscow, three Russian citizens involved in covering up the planned crime were detained, as well as a Central Asian national who directly carried out the terrorist attack," the statement reads. It adds that the latter was recruited on behalf of Ukrainian intelligence services by ISIS functionary Saidakbar Gulomov, born in 1979, who is on the international wanted list by the competent authorities of Russia and Uzbekistan.

According to Russia's FSB, S. Gulomov, acting on instructions from his Ukrainian handlers, remotely directed the perpetrator's actions from Ukraine and Western European countries via several foreign messaging apps. He provided him with the necessary funds, information about the target, as well as explosives and other components for making IEDs, which were illegally delivered to Russia by Ukrainian special services using drones.

“S. Gulomov is involved in the murder of the head of the Russian Armed Forces’ NBC Protection Troops, Lieutenant General I.A. Kirillov, which was organized by Ukrainian military intelligence, which once again demonstrates the close ties between the Kyiv regime and international terrorist organizations,” the Russian FSB stated in a statement. –0–

Tehran, October 13 (Xinhua) — Tehran will not attend the international summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, dedicated to the agreement to end the war in Gaza, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced on Monday.

“While I advocate for diplomatic engagement, neither President /Masoud/ Pezeshkian nor I can engage with colleagues who have attacked the Iranian people and continue to threaten us and impose sanctions,” A. Araghchi stated on social media.

Iran welcomes all initiatives aimed at ending Israel's "genocide" in Gaza and ensuring the expulsion of Israeli "occupation forces," he noted.

He said the Palestinians “have every right to ensure their fundamental right to self-determination, and all States remain, and more than ever, obliged to assist them in their legitimate cause.”

He said Iran has always been and will always remain a "vital force" for peace in the region, adding that, unlike Israel, Iran does not seek "forever wars" but lasting peace, prosperity and cooperation.

Leaders from more than 20 countries will attend the summit scheduled for Monday in Sharm el-Sheikh. –0–

BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday put forward four proposals to accelerate the all-round development of women.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Global Women's Summit in Beijing, Xi Jinping noted that the proposals were submitted to achieve broader consensus, open up broader paths and take more practical measures in this direction, as women's comprehensive development still faces complex challenges.

The Chinese President called for joint efforts to create favorable conditions for the growth and development of women and to generate strong momentum for promoting high-quality development of women's affairs.

“Peace and tranquility have become the prerequisites for their comprehensive development,” Xi Jinping said.

He stressed the need to strengthen the protection of women and girls in regions affected by war, conflict, poverty or natural disasters, and to support women's vital role in preventing conflicts and rebuilding their homes.

Xi Jinping added that it is extremely important to improve mechanisms to combat violence and resolutely suppress all forms of violence against women.

The Chinese head of state also proposed giving a strong impetus to the high-quality development of women's initiatives.

Xi Jinping called for efforts to address the imbalance and inadequacy of women's development worldwide and to enable all women to enjoy the benefits of economic globalization.

It is important to use scientific and technological innovations to ensure high-quality development of women's affairs and support them to play an even greater role in green development.

Xi Jinping also proposed developing governance mechanisms to protect women's rights and interests.

He called for improved institutions and laws, the implementation of further concrete and achievable policies, and the provision of better health and education resources for all women.

Xi Jinping also noted that it is crucial to promote the creation of an inclusive and harmonious social environment that frees women from discrimination and bias, expands opportunities for women to participate in political affairs and their discussion, and supports their active participation in public and social governance.

Xi Jinping stressed the need to create an atmosphere of respect for women and turn the principle of gender equality into a code of conduct accepted by all members of society.

He also proposed to jointly write a new chapter in promoting global women's cooperation.

The Chinese President called for support for women so that they can play an important role in global governance and benefit from it.

He stressed the need to maintain the key role of the UN, calling on the UN to pay more attention to the needs of women in developing countries and to create broad platforms for cooperation for women in all countries. -0-
