JERUSALEM/Gaza, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) — Military escalation in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas killed at least 46 people on Sunday despite a ceasefire agreement in place, Israeli and Palestinian sources said.

The Israeli army announced that two of its soldiers were killed in an early morning attack by Hamas. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Hamas militants fired an anti-tank missile and opened fire on Israeli troops dismantling infrastructure in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah.

In response to the attack, the IDF launched a series of airstrikes and artillery shelling on various areas of the enclave.

At least 44 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza, according to health authorities.

Gaza Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal told Xinhua that crews on the ground have responded to more than 20 distress calls since the morning.

Late Sunday evening, the Israeli army announced the resumption of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

IDF spokesman Avichai Edri said: "The IDF has begun re-implementing the ceasefire agreement in accordance with the political leadership's instructions, following a series of significant airstrikes carried out in response to Hamas' violation of the agreement."

The ceasefire agreement, brokered by Egypt, Qatar and Turkey with US support, has been in effect since October 10.

Under the agreement, both sides committed to ending hostilities, conducting a prisoner exchange, withdrawing Israeli troops from several areas of the enclave, and ensuring the flow of humanitarian aid and fuel to restore medical and rescue services.

Bogota, October 20 (Xinhua) — The Colombian government has rejected recent accusations from Washington that Colombian President Gustavo Petro is involved in the production and distribution of illegal drugs, the country's Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday.

"These accusations are extremely serious and are contrary to the dignity of the President of Colombia, who leads and tirelessly fights drug trafficking in our country," the department said in a statement.

As was recently announced at the opening ceremony of the 2025 Global Coastal Forum in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province, the population of milu (David's deer) in the Dafeng National Nature Reserve in Jiangsu has increased from 39 individuals introduced in 1986 to more than 8,500 individuals.
