HARBIN, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — A Chinese historical drama film titled "731" about the horrific biological experiments on humans conducted by the infamous Japanese Unit 731 during World War II will be released on Sept. 18, informed sources said.

According to the film's director, Zhao Linshan, the movie tells the story of local merchant Wang Yongzhang and others who were thrown into prison and lured into cooperating with medical examinations and disease prevention research with false promises of freedom.

Instead, they all became victims of brutal medical experiments carried out by the Japanese occupiers, including frostbite experiments, exposure to poisonous gases, and vivisection.

Unit 731 was established in Harbin City, capital of Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China, as a top-secret research base for the development of biological and chemical weapons and served as the command center for Japan's biological warfare in China and Southeast Asia during World War II.

“This is a story that must never be forgotten,” said the film’s historical consultant, director of the Unit 731 Crime Evidence Museum, Jin Chengmin.

"The film shows the inhumane atrocities of the Japanese army through the eyes of ordinary people, and at the same time highlights the unbending spirit of resistance of the Chinese people in the most desperate situation," Jin Chengmin said, adding that "the film serves as a vivid reminder of the need to defend peace."

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

The film's release date coincides with the anniversary of the September 18 Incident in 1931, which marked the beginning of Japan's 14-year invasion of China. –0–

Moscow, August 3 (Xinhua) — The activity of the Krasheninnikov volcano in Kamchatka, which began erupting on Sunday night, has decreased, the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported.

"The volcano's activity has decreased. Moderate explosive activity may still be occurring, but no dense ash plume is visible from the volcano on satellite images. The volcano is currently covered by dense cloud cover," the agency said in a statement.

Scientists note that ash emissions up to 10 km above sea level may occur at any time. The volcano has been assigned an “orange” aviation hazard code.

The volcano belongs to the Eastern Volcanic Belt. It is located on the territory of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve, 200 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The height of the volcano is 1856 m.

According to Olga Girina, head of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team /KVERT/, this is the first eruption of the Krasheninnikov volcano in 600 years. According to her, the eruption is possibly related to the recent strong earthquake on the peninsula. –0–

Moscow, August 3 (Xinhua) — Specialists from the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) have developed an innovative HT-1000 engine based on the Hall effect with high thrust generated by a high-speed ion flow, the institute's press service reported.

The team from the Research Institute of Applied Mechanics and Electrodynamics (RIAME) of MAI worked on the creation of the innovative engine with the support of an industrial partner, the Orbitek company.

As noted, the principle of operation of the HT-1000 engine is based on the supply of electrical energy, which, under the influence of a strong magnetic field, ionizes an inert gas /for example, xenon or krypton/. This means that electrons are knocked out of the gas atoms, it turns into plasma, consisting of free ions and electrons, which generates the necessary driving force.

“The key element is the use of a magnetic field, which is created using an innovative magnetic engine system. It directs and holds the plasma, ensuring its stability and controllability. The electric field created in the ionization chamber accelerates the ions, ejecting them from the engine’s discharge chamber at high speed. It is this high-speed ion flow that forms the jet thrust that ensures the movement of the spacecraft,” said Alexander Bogaty, Deputy Director for Development of the Research Institute of PME MAI.

This development is suitable for spacecraft weighing 450 kg and more, operating in low Earth orbit with an active life of up to seven years. This type of engine, as the developers explained, is characterized by high thrust and fuel efficiency, can operate on various types of fuel, has a relatively small size and weight, as well as a high efficiency factor, can perform orbital microcorrections and maneuvers with great precision.

“These engines will not only ensure the functioning of satellites during their life cycle, but also perform orbital raising maneuvers, separation of devices during group launches, and deorbiting of devices at the end of their service life,” explained A. Bogaty.

In addition, the engine developed at MAI allows for a reduction in the volume of fuel reserves on board. This leads to a reduction in the launch mass of the apparatus, which reduces launch costs and increases the payload.

The development of the HT-1000 engine has now been completed, prototype tests have been successfully conducted, and preparations are underway for qualification tests that take into account specific customer requirements. Preparations for serial production are also underway. For this purpose, as reported by MAI, the Orbitek company in Zelenograd has created a high-tech production site with advanced equipment that meets the strict requirements of the space industry. –0–

BARCELONA, Spain, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — The European Union has little to gain from a new trade deal with the United States, with Germany likely to be the bloc's worst-hit member, Sergi Basco, an associate professor of economics at the University of Barcelona, told Xinhua on Thursday.

As S. Basco noted, “the only positive result for Europe” in the deal, according to which the United States will set a basic 15 percent tariff rate on goods from the EU, while many American exports to Europe will not be subject to duties, is that “instead of 30 percent, it will be 15 percent.”

The expert stressed that Germany would likely “lose the most” as it is the largest EU exporter to the US.

"The tariffs will likely reduce sales of German cars to the United States" and will also hurt Spain's auto industry "since many of the cars Germany sells use components made in Spain," Basco added.

He criticised European leaders for being "too weak" in negotiating the deal, saying the EU had tools to resist US pressure.

"I don't know if it's because the negotiations were complicated by differences, but in my opinion their response was weak," the Spanish economist said.

At the same time, as S. Basco warned, it is “important” to take into account that the trade deal “is not binding”. He referred to the statement of the European Commission, which emphasized that the parties “will conduct further negotiations in accordance with their internal procedures for the full implementation of the political agreement”.

The expert recalled that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the trade agreement as a “framework,” adding that its adoption would require the approval of all 27 EU member states, whose ambassadors will meet on August 4. –0–

ALMATY, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres attended a signing ceremony of an agreement between the Kazakh government and the United Nations to establish a UN regional center for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Central Asia and Afghanistan, a statement to that effect was published on the Kazakh president's official website on Sunday.

K.-Zh. Tokayev noted that today's event is of great importance both for Kazakhstan and the UN. The signed agreement officially confirms the creation of a regional center for SDGs and marks an important stage in the long-term and fruitful cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UN.

“The powers and functions of this center will not overlap with the activities of other organizations either within the region or beyond. On the contrary, the center will complement the efforts already being undertaken, bringing additional value by focusing on the real needs of the residents of the entire region. Such problems of Central Asia as the environmental degradation of the Aral Sea and the shrinking area of the Caspian Sea have become notorious. To effectively address them, it is necessary to strengthen regional cooperation and increase the involvement of the UN,” emphasized K.-Zh. Tokayev.

In turn, A. Guterres stated that the opening of the center means the beginning of a new chapter for the region on the path to achieving sustainable development goals.

“The opening of the centre symbolises a new era of cooperation in Central Asia, based on shared priorities and joint solutions. The centre has great potential to demonstrate how strong ties between the region’s leaders can lead to deeper economic integration,” the UN Secretary-General said.

Kazakhstan will reportedly host a regional environmental summit in Astana in April 2026 in partnership with UN agencies. –0–

Scientists from China and Uzbekistan have discovered the reason for the decline of agricultural civilization in Central Asian oases in the Bronze Age

BEIJING, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — A prosperous agricultural civilization that emerged in the Bronze Age oases of southern Central Asia collapsed largely due to prolonged drought, scientists from China and Uzbekistan have concluded after years of research.

It is known that the oases in the south of Central Asia were an important hub of exchange between ancient civilizations between Asia and Europe. The emergence of settlements in this region about 4,000 years ago was due to the increased frequency of exchanges between eastern and western civilizations and the rapid development of agriculture.

Scholars view Central Asia as a key region for studying the development and spread of agriculture and environmental adaptation of early civilizations in arid zones in the context of intercontinental exchanges of civilizations.

A group of researchers from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, together with Northwest University /China/, Fergana State University /Uzbekistan/ and the State Archaeological Center of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, conducted long-term studies of two archaeological sites of Sapallitepa and Jarkutan in southern Uzbekistan.

Sapallitepa is a settlement of ancient farmers of the Bronze Age in the Surkhandarya River valley, and Dzharkutan is an ancient settlement, one of the largest monuments in Central Asia, dating back to the final stage of the Bronze Age.

The results of the analysis of spore powder and stable isotopes show that 4200-3900 years ago, the oases in the south of Central Asia had favorable meteorological conditions. Local residents grew various types of crops, including barley, wheat, millet, grapes, oleaster, etc.

The scientists also conducted morphological studies of the fruits of the narrow-leaved oleaster extracted from the ground and found out their different origins. Thus, at that time in the oases in the south of Central Asia, a production method of growing foreign crops in combination with the collection of local aboriginal crops appeared, the scientists said.

The team found that paleoclimate data showed that the drying trend in southern Central Asia and northern South Asia began about 3,900 years ago. The deterioration of the environment caused by the drought lasted for about a century, leading to a decline in the number of local inhabitants.

At the same time, the number of pastoralists increased significantly in the southern part of the Eurasian steppes, where the climate was relatively humid. The prosperity and spread of the pastoral culture to the south were important factors that led to the decline of agricultural civilization in the oases of southern Central Asia and the migration of nomads there in the late Bronze Age.

The results of the research by scientists from China and Uzbekistan were recently published in prestigious international scientific journals Journal of Archaeological Science and Quaternary Science Reviews. -0-
