COLOMBO, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — The Maldives Monetary Authority has revised its tourism forecast for 2025 to a record 2.3 million, state-run PSM News reported Sunday.

The agency said in May it expected international arrivals to total 2.2 million. The revision was based on a strong first half of the year, when international arrivals increased 9.1 percent year-on-year. By the end of June, 1,108,130 tourists had visited the country.

In addition, the agency is forecasting a record 2.4 million tourist arrivals next year.

The data show that by mid-year the total number of hospital bed days reached 6,892,533, which is 1.2 percent more than in the same period last year.

The agency said favourable market conditions and recent infrastructure improvements, including the opening of a new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport, supported its revised forecasts. -0-

CHONGQING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — Heavy rains have forced the evacuation of more than 15,000 residents in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, local authorities said Monday.

Heavy rainfall hit 16 districts and counties in Chongqing from 7:00 a.m. Sunday to 7:00 a.m. Monday, according to the city's meteorological bureau. The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Hechuan District, where the amount reached 167 mm.

More than 15,000 people had been evacuated in Chongqing as of 6 a.m. Monday, the city's emergency management department said.

The Chongqing Meteorological Station and the Chongqing City Key Hydrological Monitoring Station have forecast heavy and torrential rainfall in several areas of Chongqing from Monday morning to evening, including the city's central area, the central and southeastern parts, and the southern parts of the northeastern part of the city.

PYONGYANG, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — North Korean Minister of National Defense No Gwang-chol has condemned the large-scale joint military exercises between the United States and the Republic of Korea scheduled for Aug. 18, saying the move would pose a serious threat to security on the Korean Peninsula, state media reported Monday.

"The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise will be held under simulated conditions of a real nuclear war, and it is not only a direct military provocation against the DPRK but also a real threat that will increase the unpredictability of the situation on the Korean Peninsula, which is in a state of truce, and will perpetuate instability in the region," Noh Gwang Chol said in a press statement Sunday carried by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The DPRK strongly condemns the United States and the Republic of Korea for their provocative steps, which clearly demonstrate the stance of military confrontation with the DPRK and pose another serious challenge to the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and in the region, and solemnly warns both countries of the negative consequences, the DPRK defense minister said.

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — The China Coast Guard (CCG) took necessary measures to expel several Philippine maritime police vessels and service vessels from territorial waters off China's Huangyan Dao Island in accordance with relevant laws and regulations on Monday, said CCG spokesperson Gan Yu.

According to Gan Yu, Philippine vessels persistently entered the specified waters of the South China Sea under the pretext of supplying fishing vessels, ignoring repeated warnings and cautions from the Chinese side.

In response, the BOC ships took necessary measures to displace the Philippine vessels in accordance with the law, including tracking, monitoring and blocking. All actions by the Chinese side on the ground were professional, standardized and legal, Gan Yu said.

Bashneft allocated over 4 billion rubles for environmental protection activities in the first half of the year

In the first half of 2025, Bashneft (part of Rosneft) allocated almost 4.1 billion rubles to implement environmental projects.

Preserving the environment for future generations is one of the key principles of Rosneft's activities. The company and its subsidiaries aim to achieve leadership positions in minimizing environmental impact, increasing the environmental efficiency of production and preserving ecosystems.

One of the significant areas of Bashneft's environmental protection activities is forest restoration. During the first half of the year, the company's employees planted 240 thousand trees on the territory of Bashkortostan on a total area of 69 hectares, of which 24 thousand seedlings were planted on the shore of Aslikul, the largest lake in the region. In the second half of the year, forest restoration work will continue in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug.

Biological treatment facilities (BTF) of the Ufa group of oil refineries play an important role in the Company's work to optimize the use of water resources. During January-June, the treatment facilities processed 11.7 million m3 of wastewater. In total, over 169 million m3 of wastewater have already been purified in 7 years of operation. The facilities not only service the Bashneft oil refinery, but also purify wastewater from 66 enterprises in the northern industrial zone of Ufa and storm water. The high level of purification of industrial, storm water and domestic wastewater has made it possible to increase the volume of reused water in technological processes by 2.5 times. The quality of the resulting water meets the standards for water bodies used for fisheries.

Based on the results of the first half of the year, Bashneft also ensured the beneficial use of associated petroleum gas at its assets in Bashkiria at the level of 95.7%. The company completed the modernization of furnaces at the units of two of its plants. The implemented measures will lead to a reduction in the volume of emissions into the atmosphere by 1% per year.

Bashneft continued active work to reduce the volume of accumulated oil-containing waste using modern technologies that have passed the state environmental assessment. During the reporting period, about 50 thousand tons of oil waste were processed.
