JERUSALEM, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — Israel on Wednesday launched a new offensive on Gaza City to crush the Palestinian Hamas movement, a move that has drawn international criticism for its impact on civilians in the enclave.

According to IDF spokesman Efi Defrin, the armed forces have begun the next phase of the operation “at the direction of the political leadership.” He said ground attacks are already underway in the Zeitoun area of Gaza City and the nearby town of Jabalya, with additional forces preparing to join the fighting.

Israeli strikes in the past 24 hours have killed at least 58 people and injured 185 others, according to Gaza health authorities. TBILISI, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — The migratory bird watching season has started in Georgia's Adjara Autonomous Republic, the regional department of tourism and resorts said on Wednesday.

TBILISI, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — Four people were killed and three injured in a traffic accident on the bypass road of the resort town of Kobuleti in Georgia's western Adjara region on Wednesday, local television channel Adjara TV reported.

MINSK, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — Presidents of Belarus and Iran Alexander Lukashenko and Masoud Pezeshkian signed a joint statement on deepening bilateral relations in Minsk on Wednesday, the press service of the Belarusian head of state reported.

The signing took place at the Palace of Independence in Minsk during the official visit of the Iranian president to Belarus.
