ISLAMABAD, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — At least 13 people were killed and 31 others were injured in a blast in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province on Tuesday, health and police officials said.

Waseem Baig, media coordinator of the Balochistan provincial health department, confirmed the casualties and told Xinhua that the death toll could rise as several injured people were in critical condition.

Police sources told Xinhua that the blast occurred near a political gathering in the Shahwani Stadium area of Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan.

Government officials said the blast appeared to have been carried out by a suicide bomber and an investigation was underway to determine the exact cause and arrest those responsible.

Following the explosion, law enforcement and rescue teams arrived at the scene. The injured were taken to hospital. Security forces cordoned off the area and began collecting evidence.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the explosion. –0–

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — A U.S. federal judge ruled Tuesday that the Trump administration violated a 19th-century law when it sent National Guard troops and Marines to Los Angeles in early June to quell protests against federal immigration raids.

Charles Breyer, senior judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, wrote in his ruling that the Trump administration violated the Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits the use of U.S. military forces for domestic law enforcement without congressional approval.

The order prohibits the Trump administration from “deploying, directing, instructing, training, or using the National Guard currently stationed in California and any military units previously stationed in California to enforce the law.”

“There were indeed protests in Los Angeles, and some individuals engaged in violence. However, there was no insurrection, and civilian law enforcement was able to respond to the protests and enforce the law,” the ruling states.

It notes that nearly three months after the National Guard was deployed to Los Angeles, there are still 300 National Guard troops there, adding that US President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have said they intend to bring the troops into federal service in other cities across the country, thus creating a national police force with the president as its chief.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, one of the plaintiffs, said in a statement: “Today, the court sided with democracy and the Constitution. No president is a king, not even Trump, and no president can trample on a state’s right to protect its citizens.”

“Trump’s attempt to use federal troops as his personal police force is illegal, authoritarian, and must be stopped in every courtroom across the country,” the statement said.

In response to the decision, White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly said in a statement: “Once again, an unscrupulous judge is attempting to usurp the commander in chief’s authority to protect American cities from violence and destruction.”

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a notice of appeal against Breyer's ruling with the federal appeals court and requested a stay of enforcement of the ruling pending the appeal.

According to CNN, Brenner Fissell, vice president of the National Institute of Military Justice, said that while Breyer's ruling does not have an immediate impact outside of California, it will undoubtedly be a first for other judges who may hear similar cases. -0-

Special Report: From Blue Skies to the Gobi Desert – Remembering the International ‘Lifeline’ Built Through the Fires of War

MOSCOW/LANZHOU, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — More than 80 years ago in northwest China, the international anti-fascist "lifeline" laid through the fires of war witnessed the unity of the Chinese people in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and National Salvation, as well as mutual assistance between China and other anti-fascist forces around the world.

In May of this year, Chinese President Xi Jinping, in his opinion article published in Rossiyskaya Gazeta, paid special attention to the exciting past of China and Russia, which fought side by side and supported each other in the World Anti-Fascist War: “In the fiery years, large-scale deliveries of Soviet weapons to China and the reverse flow of strategically important cargo that was in great demand for the USSR were provided by a cross-border “lifeline” laid through the “dead” desert by the joint efforts of the two countries and played a significant role in mutual support for the fight against the fascists.”

THEY ARE ALL HEROES

Soon after the full-scale Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression began, China and the Soviet Union opened the Northwest International Transport Corridor. Lanzhou City (the capital of Gansu Province) became an important hub of this international "lifeline."

"At that time, China was in dire need of pilots and aircraft. The Soviet Union sent a volunteer air squadron, provided assistance in the form of weapons and equipment, which was very helpful," said Pan Jie, a junior researcher at the Lanzhou Branch Memorial Museum of the 8th Army.

“I want to volunteer to fly to China to fight,” Pavel Zhigarev, who later became the Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet Air Force, addressed the command. He was later sent to China, where he participated in the command of the Soviet volunteer air detachment, mainly based in the city of Lanzhou. They were assigned many duties, such as transportation, reinforcement and training.

A joint photo of P. Zhigarev with his wife and daughter is one of the few of his pictures that have been preserved in the family to this day. Looking at the yellowed photo, P. Zhigarev's granddaughter Elena and her husband Konstantin Bobylev said: "He's getting ready already. This is, let's say, probably a farewell photo. I think, just in case, as usually happens."

P. Zhigarev's memories of China were passed down from mouth to mouth in the family. At that time, Soviet pilots were leaving from Almaty (present-day Kazakhstan) for Lanzhou. "The route was quite long, the tasks were difficult, and they had to fly over the plateau and the Gobi. The danger was obvious," said K. Bobylev. "They were all heroes. It was a miracle that they were able to get to China at all."

According to the memoirs of P. Zhigarev, the heroic Chinese people made unimaginable sacrifices and made incredible efforts to resist the Japanese invaders in the most difficult conditions. K. Bobylev said that if we take only the servicing of aircraft as an example, “they simply carried fuel on their backs, in their arms.”

Shipments of Soviet aircraft and pilots arriving to help China used Lanzhou as a staging post. Chinese pilots also trained in Lanzhou before heading to the front.

In order to destroy this transportation corridor, the Japanese invaders repeatedly attacked Lanzhou and other places. According to statistics, since 1937, the Japanese aggressors have carried out 1,081 sorties and attacked various parts of Gansu Province 71 times. In particular, Lanzhou was attacked 36 times, as a result of which more than 10,000 houses were destroyed, and more than 20,000 people were killed and injured.

Chinese and Soviet pilots carried out joint counterattacks. According to the victorious reports published in newspapers at the time, in the battles of February 20 and 23, 1939, Chinese and Soviet pilots shot down more than ten Japanese planes, which significantly raised the fighting spirit of the people. The heroic and tragic air battles near Lanzhou thwarted the Japanese invaders' plan to seize air supremacy in northwest China and cut off the international "lifeline."

FRIENDSHIP OF MUTUAL ASSISTANCE

In Lanzhou, Wuhan, Chongqing and other places, more than 2,000 Soviet pilots participated in the volunteer air squadron in providing assistance to China, and more than 200 of them gave their precious lives. Chinese President Xi Jinping has repeatedly told the story of Soviet pilot Grigory Kulishenko, who heroically fought against the Japanese invaders and died in China, about the Chinese mother and son who looked after his grave for decades, and about the Soviet air squadron that helped China in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.

During one of her trips to China, Russian Academy of Sciences researcher Ekaterina Zaklyazminskaya visited Jiefang Park /Liberation/ in Wuhan. She was deeply moved to see the graves and monuments to Soviet volunteer pilots, carefully preserved by the Chinese for many years, and has since made the history of those joint battles one of her areas of research.

Recently, through lectures and other means, she has been introducing Russians to this international “lifeline,” specifically mentioned by President Xi Jinping in his opinion piece. According to her, this “lifeline” demonstrated the “friendship and mutual assistance in difficult times” between the two countries and ensured their final victory.

“LET’S MAKE JOINT EFFORTS”

From 1937 to 1941, the Soviet Union provided China with more than 1,200 aircraft and large quantities of weapons and equipment, while China in turn sent the USSR large quantities of agricultural products, minerals, and other important strategic materials. The land route through Central Asia to China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) and Gansu was the main transport line of the international "lifeline."

Chen Lu, a professor at the Taihu Institute in Wuxi, believes that this international “lifeline” was of great strategic importance. China received weapons support to contain the main forces of the Japanese army in a protracted war, and the USSR received strategic resources, while avoiding a war on two fronts.

“Let’s work together! We are not afraid of the high mountains, we are not afraid of the endless Gobi Desert, we are not afraid of the wind, frost, rain and snow…” In May 1939, the Xinjiang Daily, a newspaper under the leadership of the Chinese Communists at the time, published a special issue entitled “Provincial Road Conference”. A small column on the newspaper page was specially set aside for handwritten notes and lyrics of a song called “Road Construction Song” by the famous writer Mao Dun. The song called on all ethnic groups in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to work together to build the road. This is just one example of the enormous efforts made by the Chinese Communists to open the Northwest International Transport Corridor.

Since August this year, the Lanzhou 8th Army Memorial Museum has been hosting a themed exhibition on “Northwest International Transport Corridor during the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.” Yellowed invoices, engineering drawings, records of active donations from the public, as well as trucks, camels, horses, and sheepskin rafts captured in archival photographs have brought history back to life.

“These trucks delivered Soviet weapons and equipment to China, and brought back wool, sheepskins and other materials produced in abundance in the northwest of the country. Locals nicknamed them ‘wool trucks,’” Pan Tsz pointed out the exhibits.

As time goes by, everything changes. Gongxingdun Airport in Lanzhou, which witnessed the takeoffs and landings of fighter jets during the war, has now become a bustling area with skyscrapers and convenient transportation. The comprehensive free trade zone, international airport, international land port and railway border crossing in Lanzhou connect Gansu Province with the world. An important stop on the Northwest International Transport Corridor is Horgos in Xinjiang. It is currently an important port for the high-quality joint construction of the “Belt and Road”, witnessing the rapid development of the first cross-border free trade zone and a new era of “steel camels” — China-Europe freight trains — moving across Eurasia. The international transport corridor in the past is now an “artery of cooperation” and a “road of happiness”, which will definitely continue to write new stories of jointly advancing towards prosperity and common progress. –0–

BEIJING, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — China held a large-scale military parade in central Beijing on Wednesday to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, declaring the country's commitment to peaceful development in a world still in turbulence and uncertainty.

Tiananmen Square was filled with tall installations in the shape of the Great Wall of China, symbolizing the courage and solidarity of the Chinese people in resisting external aggression.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, delivered an important speech and toured the parade vehicles.

Standing next to Xi Jinping on the podium in Tiananmen Square were Russian President Vladimir Putin and General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK Kim Jong-un, as well as more than 20 other foreign leaders.

Representatives of people who helped China during World War II or their family members from countries such as Russia, the United States, Great Britain, France and Canada were invited to the event.

For the second time since 2015, China held a military parade to commemorate the hard-won victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Three helicopters flew over Tiananmen Square carrying banners that read, respectively, “Justice Will Definitely Prevail,” “Peace Will Definitely Prevail,” and “The People Will Definitely Prevail.” Troops marched in a tight, powerful formation, their faces beaming with confidence and pride. Columns of new tanks, artillery pieces, and other military hardware roared across the square.

Xi Jinping delivered a speech before the parade, stressing the importance of the victory 80 years ago, noting that this was China's first complete victory in repelling an external invasion since the beginning of modern history.

Xi Jinping noted that the Chinese people made enormous contributions to saving human civilization and safeguarding world peace by making enormous sacrifices in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, calling on countries to address the root causes of wars and prevent historical tragedies from recurring.

On September 2, 1945, Japan officially surrendered with the signing of the Instrument of Surrender. China declared September 3 as Victory Day.

A procession of 80 honorary banners of heroic military units that fought in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression passed by Tiananmen Square, highlighting China's position as the first country to rise up against fascist aggression and the longest resistance since 1931.

China tied down and attacked more than half of Japan's armed forces abroad, at a cost of 35 million military and civilian casualties, about a third of all World War II casualties worldwide.

More than 10,000 military personnel, as well as more than 100 aircraft and hundreds of ground vehicles of the country's armed forces were formed in accordance with the wartime command system. The new system of services and weapons of the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA) was presented for the first time – the result of military reforms led by Xi Jinping.

Modern weapons on display at the parade included unmanned intelligent and counter-unmanned vehicles, hypersonic missiles, directed energy weapons and electronic jamming systems, as well as strategic weapons capable of global strikes.

In his speech, Xi Jinping demanded that the PLA provide strategic support for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

He reaffirmed China's commitment to the path of peaceful development. "Humanity once again faces a choice: peace or war, dialogue or confrontation, win-win or zero-sum games," he said.

Chinese soldiers serving in UN peacekeeping operations marched through Tiananmen Square, taking part in the Victory Day parade for the first time. “We are capable of defending the peace that our ancestors shed their blood to achieve,” said Shao Xiaoguang, a member of the reviewing troops who previously served in the peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

It was also the first military parade since Xi Jinping led China on a “new march to comprehensively advance China’s modernization.” The country’s authorities have drawn up an action plan to ensure that China’s modernization is basically realized by 2035.

“Eighty years ago, we were reborn. Eighty years later, we are thriving with even greater vigor,” said Liu Shuye, a graduate student studying artificial intelligence who attended the event.

“Our country has now reached a stage where we need to take on even greater responsibility,” he added. -0-

first day of freshmen at RUDN

Translation. Region: Russian Federal

Source: Peoples'Friendship University of Russia –

An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

In hand is a university map, the goal is to visit all the places marked on it, complete tasks and get rewards. The first day at RUDN for first-year students was held in the style of a quest or a computer game-walker in reality. 21 locations and three hours of time – on your marks, get set, let's go!

A healthy mind resides in a healthy body!

The students had to go around more than one building, and for this they needed to warm up well and get a boost of energy after the first September classes. The newcomers were helped with this at the location of the Druzhba physical education and health complex. The girls were given mats and given the task of doing abdominal exercises for 30 seconds, the exercise could be replaced with squats. The guys demonstrated the strength of their arms by doing push-ups.

"Everyone is so athletic! Come on, sign up for the sections!" the FOK trainers said with a smile.

But not only the athletic first-year students of RUDN, but also masters of humor. This was confirmed at the Interclub at the KVN location. The newcomers discussed the topic: "There are many ways to lose money, but how to increase income?"

The girls jokingly suggested finding a guy for this. But the answer to the question of what to take with you to another planet would please the creators of the MAX messenger. According to one of the first-year students, it must definitely catch and provide communication with Earth there.

After joking around, the students went off to sing karaoke songs and dance Russian folk dances.

The smartest new kid

However, music was also played at the location where one could get acquainted with communities from Lebanon, Vietnam, Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Columbia and others. Foreign students from RUDN University led first-year students in dancing to the sounds of their national melodies. Representatives from Lebanon taught the dabka dance to the sounds of the drum.

"It's great, it's so much fun here! They even let us try on national costumes! We also liked the KVN location, we even thought about trying ourselves in humor. We entered RUDN in the "Journalism" program. I did it because I dream of working in television, and my friend followed in the footsteps of her mother, a photojournalist. We chose RUDN because of the good reviews, especially about the internship, interesting education. In addition, it is a point of attraction for different cultures, an unusual university!" – Elizaveta Smirnova and Alisa Makarova, bachelors of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of RUDN.

Literally next to this atmosphere of an oriental holiday, students answered questions on a test about digital literacy. The answer options made everyone smile. For example, to the question: "Why do you need Excel?" you could answer that it helps to count the stars in the sky or keep track of train schedules. But, of course, everyone chose the right option – to calculate the project budget. But the guys really wanted to call Pavel Durov the creator of the Internet, because there is a grain of truth in the joke if we are talking about popular social networks in Russia. However, the father of the World Wide Web was still the British scientist Tim Burners-Lee.

At the admissions office location, students were also tested for erudition, but here many questions concerned facts about the university. For example, how many countries do students come from, do they give a car for excellent studies, and what are the corporate colors of RUDN. Future historian Karina Zhumagalieva had no trouble completing these tasks.

"I really like the atmosphere of the university, it's so beautiful and green here! And today is such a wonderful holiday, I've already managed to sing my fill and have fun. I entered the History program because I've always loved this subject and I'm especially interested in the history of the Soviet Union. Therefore, I hope to delve deeper into the study of this period," Karina Zhumagalieva, Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences at RUDN University.

Friends from 170 countries

Three hours of the RUDN University quest flew by unnoticed, and now the students began to gather at the stage on the square in front of the main building in anticipation of a welcoming speech from the RUDN University rector. The first-year students held posters in their hands with support for their faculties and institutes. Here and there, guys and girls began to chant: "Philology department-philology department!", "IMEB-IMEB!"

And here is the culmination – the flags of Russia and RUDN were brought out, and Oleg Aleksandrovich Yastrebov appeared in front of the first-year students.

"I congratulate you, you really have a very important day today. Knowledge Day at your new alma mater, this is your second home, which, believe me, will stay with you for life. I congratulate you on entering one of the best universities not only in Russia, but also in the world, whose graduates are in all countries without exception. You opened these doors with perseverance, talent, knowledge. We have a university of opportunities – use them! You will have amazing teachers. Do sports, volunteer. Meet – in your address book there will be friends from 170 countries of the world. I wish you success, good luck, guys!" – Oleg Yastrebov, Rector of RUDN.

After Oleg Aleksandrovich's warm words, our university's anthem began to sound, which was immediately picked up and sung by new RUDN students, who turned on the flashlights on their phones. On this touching note, the first day of the first-year students' journey came to an end. But ahead of them are many educational and career roads, achievements and victories.

"I entered RUDN University for "Foreign Regional Studies" because I dream of becoming a diplomat and a specialist in relations with China in the future, as this is a promising direction, which is confirmed by the foreign policy of our country. Relations with this state will play a big role. The university attracted me because it has high positions in the rankings, and in general it impresses with the level of education and the international scale of its activities," Roman Petrov, a bachelor of the RUDN University Institute of Foreign Languages.

"And I will study in the direction of "Innovation Management in Industrial Sectors". This is a promising direction that combines both the humanities and the exact sciences. I think it will be interesting for me to study.
