In the village of Lasite, Altay City, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, 71-year-old Slanbek Shahesh carefully sands a birch board to make fur skis. He has been practicing this ancient craft for over half a century. "I learned the craft from my father since I was 15 or 16 years old. In ancient times, it was a travel tool for the people of Altay," he says.

The rock carvings in Dandebrak, located 40 km from the old man's workshop, depict scenes of ancient Altai people hunting on fur skis more than ten thousand years ago. These valuable petroglyphs are the evidence that earned Altai international recognition as the "origin of skiing."

Zhang Wenting, an employee of the Lasite village administration, explained: "In winter, local herders still use fur skis for everyday life and work in the mountains. We also hold traditional skiing competitions on these skis."

Altai is located in the golden ski belt at 47 degrees north latitude. Four major ski resorts have already been built here: Jiangjunshan, Kektokai, Jikpulling, and Langshan in Qinggil County. The region is rapidly developing into China's premier tourist destination, a world-class winter resort, and a winter economic hub with international influence.

Beijing, September 28 (Xinhua) — An online meeting on the cooperation mechanism for consumer protection in cross-border purchases between Heihe and Blagoveshchensk was held recently in Heihe, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, marking the official establishment of such a mechanism between the two cities, the Heihe Daily newspaper reported.

As noted at the meeting, since the introduction of visa-free travel between China and Russia, and with the deepening of trade, economic, tourism, and human exchanges between the two countries, cross-border consumption has demonstrated growing momentum. The creation of a joint and effective mechanism for consumer protection has become a common need.

The formal establishment of such a mechanism will help create trend-setting cross-border consumption zones and tourism clusters capable of effectively protecting the legitimate rights and interests of consumers in both countries, thereby providing new impetus for promoting economic prosperity and overall development, the meeting emphasized.

At the meeting, representatives of the parties reached consensus on issues such as the creation of specialized positions for handling complaints, the opening of publicly accessible channels for consumer protection, the establishment of a mechanism for regular consultations, etc. -0-

On September 26, a gala reception was held in Beijing to mark the opening of the Russian Cultural Center in its new building. The event was organized by the Rossotrudnichestvo Representative Office in China jointly with the Russian Embassy in China.

The ceremony was attended by Minister-Counselor of the Russian Embassy in China N.A. Stepkina, representatives of the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Ministry of Education, as well as the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. Heads of key departments of Rossotrudnichestvo K.M. Volkov and E.V. Moskokova arrived from Moscow for the event.

Opening the event, N.A. Stepkina congratulated the Center on its new home. "Over the past years, the RCC has successfully fulfilled its important mission and has become a true center of attraction for Chinese friends interested in our country and compatriots living in China," the diplomat stated. She also noted that the Center's staff, led by Tatyana Borisovna Urzhumtseva, is conducting "constant, meticulous work across the entire spectrum of Russian-Chinese humanitarian cooperation."

The head of Rossotrudnichestvo, Evgeny Primakov, addressed the guests with a video greeting. He stated that "the Russian House in Beijing is a living embodiment of the friendship between Russia and China," and its opening "marked an important stage in strengthening the strategic partnership." According to Primakov, over the 15 years of its operation, the Center "has managed to earn unconditional recognition, becoming an integral part of the cultural life of the capital of the Celestial Empire."

In her speech, T.B. Urzhumtseva, Director of the RCC, expressed gratitude to everyone who helped establish the Center. "This was our first home base, our 'alma mater' in China. It became a bridge of friendship for thousands of people, a place where professional and personal connections were forged, and joint projects were born," she noted. Speaking about the new space, T.B. Urzhumtseva emphasized: "The new space is more than just new walls. It offers a whole new level of possibilities. Spacious halls for exhibitions of contemporary and classic works, equipped auditoriums for film screenings and lectures, modern language classrooms, a dance hall—all of this is created for you."

An awards ceremony was held as part of the reception: K.M. Volkov and E.V. Moskokova presented departmental awards from Rossotrudnichestvo to the Representative Office's partners. Furthermore, RCC employee Gao Lei received a letter of thanks from the Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation, O.B. Lyubimova.
