ACCRA, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) — Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has praised the long-term impact of the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995, saying it helped bring development issues related to women to the forefront of decision-making at the national and international levels.

Ahead of his trip to Beijing to attend the 2025 Global Women's Summit, J.D. Mahama reflected nostalgically on the 1995 conference during an exclusive interview with Xinhua at the presidential palace in Accra.

"The World Conference on Women in Beijing was a significant global event that brought women's issues to the forefront of the global agenda," he said. "Thirty years have passed, and now we must look back and assess the progress our women have made."

He said significant progress had been made in Ghana, including achieving gender parity in school enrolment for boys and girls.

The President outlined a number of initiatives aimed at empowering women, including the adoption of a gender equality law that will significantly increase women's representation in government and public life.

Other achievements he cited included the creation of a domestic violence and victim support unit within the police force, plans to establish a Women's Development Bank, and policies aimed at promoting girls' education.

"Perhaps the greatest achievement is that for the first time in Ghana's history, a woman has become vice president. She broke the glass ceiling: she opened a door, and I'm sure many more women could have taken this position. And perhaps, in the near future, we will even have our first female president in Ghana," he said.

“I really think the Beijing [World Conference on Women] had a very positive impact because it forced every country to take gender issues seriously,” said J.D. Mahama.

Speaking about relations between Ghana and China, the President noted that since the establishment of diplomatic ties 65 years ago, the countries have successfully cooperated in areas such as agriculture and infrastructure development, which has significantly increased labor productivity in Ghana.

"Ghana views China as a partner," the president said. "We value our friendship and solidarity with China and believe that after 65 years of cooperation, our partnership will reach new heights."

According to him, the steady growth of trade is a positive development. Given Ghana's geographic and strategic advantages, he believes bilateral relations can reach an even higher level. He emphasized that Ghana's top priority is working with China to increase the added value of natural resources and locally produced goods.

The President praised the Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FCAC), noting that Ghana's central location in West Africa, its status as a major port hub, and the location of the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat in Accra make the country "a central hub for China-Africa industrial cooperation."

He also praised China's development path, emphasizing that with the right measures, Africa can improve its living standards and achieve prosperity. –0–

BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) — A new generation of talented women, from astronauts to chief designers, are making significant contributions to China's space exploration, supported by government policies aimed at ensuring gender equality in scientific and technological innovation.

The story of Wang Yaping, the first female astronaut to walk on the Chinese space station, is a shining example. Her spaceflight dream began in 2003, when China launched its first astronaut, Yang Liwei, into space. "I watched the rocket's bright light on TV, and a thought flashed through my mind: now China has a male astronaut, but when will it have a female one?" said Wang.

Through her persistent efforts, she became a crew member of the Shenzhou-10 space mission in 2013. Wang Yaping, who once dreamed of becoming a teacher, conducted a 40-minute open lesson – China's first live lecture from space – from aboard a spacecraft on June 20, 2013, for more than 60 million schoolchildren across the country.

The lecture had a profound impact, extending far beyond the classroom. "I received many letters from children and young people. The one that most impressed me was from a graduate student at Beijing Aerospace University," she recalls.

This letter was written by a girl six years after she saw Wang Yaping explain the principles of a gyroscope from space. In the letter, the girl explained that she studied the same principles in a university lab six years after Wang Yaping's lecture. "This is the purpose of our space lesson—to sow the seeds of scientific and space dreams in the hearts of children," Wang Yaping noted.

Meanwhile, in November 2021, Wang Yaping's spacewalk during the Shenzhou-13 mission made her the first Chinese woman to perform a space walk.

Remarkably, to achieve her goal, she underwent the same intense training as male astronauts.

Wang Yaping said space has never changed its environment or lowered its standards because of the arrival of women, and that extensive flight data shows no significant differences between men and women in their ability to adapt and perform in space.

"It was the concept of gender equality that gave me the opportunity to complete two space missions and realize my dreams," Wang Yaping noted. "It's safe to assume that more and more women will participate in human spaceflight. This will have a significant impact on the future of large-scale and long-term human space exploration."

Behind astronauts like Wang Yaping stands another woman: Huang Weifen, chief designer of the astronaut training system for China's manned space program.

In 1992, when China's manned space program was officially established, the task of selecting and training astronauts fell to then-28-year-old Huang Weifen. Lacking a ready-made system to use, she developed China's first comprehensive astronaut training plan in just three months—a plan that laid the foundation for the country's astronaut training efforts for the next two decades.

Under the leadership of Huang Weifen, a complex training system was developed, covering more than 100 subjects in eight categories.

The innovative nature of her work was accompanied by enormous challenges, and Huang Weifen admitted that behind closed doors, she sometimes even cried. "But after those tears, I always returned to work with renewed vigor, solving one problem after another. When I remember that I'm doing this for the country and the nation, I immediately feel a surge of strength. I never thought about giving up."

Her mission, though not in the public eye, is her driving force. "My mission is to prepare more and more outstanding astronauts for our country, who will be able to realize our dreams during their flights," she said. "Ensuring their spaceflights is my goal."

This synergy between the visible heroine and the invisible strategist is reinforced by the state's system of institutional support. As highlighted in the recently published white paper "China's Achievements in Comprehensive Development of Women's Affairs in the New Era," China has implemented a number of measures to support talented women in science and technology in implementing national projects and participating in decision-making, as well as to improve their assessment and incentive mechanisms. These support measures include the National Natural Science Foundation of China relaxing the age limit for female applicants.

Such initiatives reduce the pressure women in science and technology face to care for children and family, support their commitment to research, and allow them to combine family and career, said Wang Yaping, who is also an adjunct vice chairperson of the All-China Women's Federation.

According to the White Paper, there will be 2.846 million women in China's R&D sector in 2024—1.692 million more than in 2012. Women now account for 45.8 percent of China's science and technology workforce.

Wang Yaping and Huang Weifen aren't the only women who have contributed to the country's space aspirations. The list also includes such notable figures as Liu Yang, China's first female astronaut; Zhang Yuhua, deputy commander of the Chang'e-5 lunar probe and deputy commander of the Tianwen-1 Mars probe; Zhang Runhong, the first female commander of the "01" spaceport; and many others.

From Wang Yaping's inspiring lectures from space to Huang Weifen's unwavering dedication on Earth, Chinese women are going beyond mere participation, taking command and leading in key areas of the national space program, proving that, given equal opportunity, the sky is not the limit, but only the beginning. -0-

Beijing, October 15 (Xinhua) — China on Wednesday requested consultations with India at the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding India's subsidies in the electric vehicle and battery sectors, the Ministry of Commerce announced.

India's measures are said to violate a number of WTO commitments, including the principle of national treatment, and constitute import subsidies, which are formally prohibited under WTO rules, a ministry spokesperson said in a statement.

These measures unfairly benefit Indian domestic industries and undermine China's legitimate interests, the ministry spokesman said, adding that China will take resolute measures to thoroughly protect the legitimate rights and interests of domestic industries.

China has noted that over a period of time, some of India's trade and economic measures have been found to be inconsistent with WTO rules, which has caused widespread concern among WTO members, the official said, calling on India to abide by its WTO commitments and promptly correct its erroneous practices. -0-

Beijing, October 15 (Xinhua) — The China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan international multimodal transport route began trial operation on Wednesday. The creation and trial operation of this corridor demonstrates Kashgar's growing importance in the international logistics network under the Belt and Road Initiative, according to the unified information center of the converged editorial office of Kashgar Prefecture in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The trial operation covers two multimodal transport routes, with cargo transported by rail from Xi'an in Shaanxi Province and Chengdu in Sichuan Province to Kashgar for consolidation, and then crossing the border through the Irkeshtam border crossing. One route utilizes combined road and rail transport: trucks depart Kashgar for Kyrgyzstan, where the cargo is transferred to rail trains. The goods then travel to the international seaport of Turkmenbashi, where they then cross the Caspian Sea and reach Baku in Azerbaijan. The other route is the first to use Chinese trucks to directly transport cargo through Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan in a single trip, destined for Ashgabat.

HOHHOT, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) — The total number of freight trains that passed through the Erenhot Port of North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on the China-Europe international freight railway since its launch in 2013 reached nearly 21,000 as of Oct. 14, with the total volume of freight carried exceeding 20 million tons.

The Ereenhot checkpoint is a key hub on the central route for international rail freight transport between China and Europe. Currently, 74 China-Europe rail routes pass through this checkpoint. These lines reach over 140 cities and stations in more than 10 countries in Asia and Europe.

At the same time, the range of goods transported by China-Europe freight trains is becoming increasingly diverse, with more than 40 percent of the total freight volume being high-value-added goods, including Chinese-made vehicles, machinery, and electronic devices.

These freight services have already become an important channel for Chinese goods to enter global markets, said Zhang Jianwei, deputy head of the Ereen Hot Customs. -0-

GUIYANG, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) — As the Huajiang Gorge Bridge in southwest China's Guizhou Province was shrouded in morning fog, Xie Chaoqing, a local guesthouse owner, flew his drone past the bridge's tallest support tower, capturing the awe-inspiring grandeur of the world's tallest operating bridge. He says the structure has completely changed his life.

The Huajiang Gorge Bridge, rising 625 meters above the Beipan River in the Guizhou mountains, is nearly nine times taller than San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. The 2,890-meter-long structure, which spans the Huajiang Gorge, known as the "crack in the earth," is the latest link in the rapidly expanding infrastructure network of the world's second-largest economy.

Since the bridge opened to traffic in late September this year, travel time across the gorge has been reduced from two hours to just two minutes, significantly improving regional connectivity.

Local authorities are striving to transform this engineering marvel into a world-renowned tourist attraction, rivaling the popularity of Huangguoshu Waterfall, Asia's largest waterfall, located just 50 km away. From the very beginning of construction in 2022, the bridge was designed with tourism in mind.

The area around the bridge, covering more than 50 square kilometers, has been included in the plan and is being developed as a high-altitude tourism destination offering a variety of outdoor activities, including extreme sports, scientific education, sightseeing, and leisure, said Jian Jijun, deputy general manager of the Guizhou Local Transport and Investment Corporation.

Xie Chaoqing's guesthouse, located at the foot of the bridge, offers a beautiful view from its rooftop terrace. During the recently concluded National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays (October 1-8), all ten-plus rooms were booked in advance. "We had entire families coming to see the bridge. We even offered some of them a room for free," Xie Chaoqing recalls.

According to official data, 220,000 tourists visited the bridge during the aforementioned holidays. "This project has given many of us local residents a new sense of direction and purpose in life," said Xie Chaoqing, observing the steady flow of tourists.

Like many others, 43-year-old Xie Chaoqing and his wife once found themselves riding the wave of the e-commerce boom in eastern China's Zhejiang Province. A return to his hometown of Guizhou, one of China's least developed provinces, marked a career shift toward content creation. He became a social media influencer, collaborating with friends to create short videos about rural life.

While filming outdoors in May 2022, he saw the future tallest bridge in the world, still under construction, inspiring him to document its construction from start to finish. From that day on, he visited the construction site every month or every other month to capture the progress with his drone.

The completion of the bridge's main support tower in early 2024 marked a significant milestone. Despite his family's concerns, Xie Chaoqing put all other work on hold and dedicated himself to filming the final stages of construction, documenting the bridge's progress throughout all four seasons. The breathtaking, and sometimes dangerous, footage has become a veritable treasure trove of viral content for his online platform.

Currently, his account on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, has garnered 4.6 million likes, and his most popular video has been viewed over 70 million times. He has over 1.5 million followers across various social media platforms.

During filming, Xie Chaoqing explored every nearby hill and visited every village. "When I was a child, the journey here was a difficult trek through mountains and rivers. Now, the deep gorge has become a straightforward route," he said.

He saw an opportunity when he noticed many internet users asking about hotel accommodations in the comments section of his video about the bridge. "So, I went to Huajiang Village, which is located below the bridge, rented a house there, and converted it into a guesthouse," he said. "I had a feeling that once the bridge opened to traffic, there would be a real tourism boom here," he added.

He said the bridge's opening had completely revived the village, with its neat streets, landscaped gardens and old buildings converted into guesthouses and traditional restaurants.

“Many of my subscribers, when they make a booking, say they’re coming not only to see the bridge but also to enjoy extreme sports,” he said.

After visiting the Huajiang Gorge Bridge, social media influencer Lin Xi was so captivated by its grandeur that she decided to climb the bridge and experience the thrill of a "skywalk." She said, "This bridge is a true engineering marvel for humanity. I can't wait to experience what it's like to walk more than 600 meters above the earth's surface."

According to Xiao Yuming, head of the market development department of the aforementioned transportation and investment corporation, during the National Day holiday alone, over 1,000 visitors were able to experience the thrill of high-altitude extreme sports such as skywalking, bungee jumping, and giant swings.

Furthermore, the Guizhou Provincial Geological Museum brought two marine paleontological fossils to the bridge for display. This scientific geological exhibition aims to demonstrate the profound geological changes that have occurred in the area over the past 200 million years. Furthermore, the exhibition also featured over 50 types of cultural and creative products related to paleontological fossils.

According to Wei Qianzhu, a staff member in the museum's cultural and creative products department, the museum's sales during the eight-day holiday exceeded 50,000 yuan (about $7,040), and items such as mystery boxes featuring glow-in-the-dark paleobionts sold out almost instantly.

According to the 2025 Work Report of the Guizhou Provincial Government, Guizhou plans to enhance the role of the Huajiang Gorge Bridge to promote the integrated development of cultural tourism, agro-tourism, sports tourism and bridge-related tourism.

"This is not just a bridge, but a 'golden gate' that channels vital flows of people, goods, capital and information into our area," said Li Zuping, head of Zhenfeng County, where the bridge is located. -0-
