Shanghai, October 16 (Xinhua) — On Wednesday, China's General Administration of Customs (GAC) signed documents granting market access to 15 categories of food products from 10 countries, including South Africa and Belarus. This move will allow more food products from countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative to reach Chinese consumers more quickly.

This was announced at a conference on customs cooperation in food safety within the Belt and Road Initiative, which took place in Shanghai on Wednesday. More than 100 participants from China and other Belt and Road Initiative countries attended.

In recent years, food trade has become a new important area of China's trade with Belt and Road countries. According to customs data, in the first three quarters of 2025, China's food trade volume with these countries reached 915.24 billion yuan (approximately $128.92 billion), an increase of 2.5 percent year-on-year.

Since the establishment of the food import and export security cooperation mechanism for countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative in 2023, significant progress has been made, Sun Meijun, head of the General Administration of Customs, said at the conference.

"Thanks to green channels for fresh and perishable products, Thai durians now reach Chinese markets in just 13 hours, and Chinese salmon can reach the Indonesian market in just 39 hours," Sun Meijun added.

According to Zhao Zenglian, Deputy Director General of the National Customs Union of China, since the mechanism's establishment in 2023, the National Customs Union has signed 197 cooperation agreements with relevant countries on access to agricultural and food products. By optimizing China's visa-free transit, regional visa-free entry, and visa-on-arrival policies, Russian patients now have more convenient access to medical services in China.

Cities such as Dalian, Anshan in Liaoning Province, and Hunchun in Jilin Province have seen a steady increase in the number of Russian patients and people undergoing treatment at traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) facilities.

TCM, with its unique diagnostic and treatment methods, is gaining increasing popularity among Russian patients. They come to China not only for treatment and rehabilitation but also combine this with tourism. This new model of cross-border medical tourism, deeply integrating treatment, rehabilitation, and wellness tourism, is attracting an increasing number of Russian tourists.

Enhe Village, located in Enhe Russian Ethnic Township, Ergun City, Hulunbuir City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is nestled deep in a primeval forest in the northern Greater Khingan Region, on the banks of the Haur River. It covers an area of approximately 1,500 mu (15 mu = 1 hectare). The permanent population is over 1,000. The village boasts well-preserved traditional houses known as "Mukelen" (Russian wooden huts).

In recent years, local authorities have been actively developing tourism and specialized industries, combining traditional Russian songs and dances with harvest celebrations. Tourists stay in wooden huts, learn to bake traditional Russian bread, and participate in festive events celebrating the bountiful harvest. Many artists and students come here to create and sketch, while local Russian residents play the accordion, perform traditional dances, and treat everyone to delicacies, sharing in the joy of the harvest.

Local Russian folk dances were included in the Intangible Cultural Heritage Register of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in 2007, and the traditional Basyke festival (similar to Easter) was included in the third group of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List of China in 2011.

As one of the villages with the most fully preserved unique Russian culture, Enhe Village was included in the second group of the list of traditional Chinese villages in 2013.

Chongqing, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) — Four trucks loaded with electronics departed from the Xiyong Bonded Industrial Zone in southwest China's Chongqing on Wednesday for Almaty under the TIR (Travel International Road) system.

This event marked the beginning of the operation of the Chongqing-Central Asia freight road route within the above-mentioned system.

The trucks will cross the Chinese border through the Khorgos border crossing point in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, northwest China. The entire journey is expected to take approximately 4.5 days, which is almost 30 percent shorter than traditional cross-border road freight and significantly improves logistics efficiency.

TIR is an international system that simplifies the transport of goods between countries. Under this system, cargo is sealed at the starting point of the route and inspected only upon arrival at the destination. At intermediate border crossings, border crossing officers merely verify the TIR carnet data and the customs stamp on the vehicle. This reduces transit time and mitigates potential risks associated with administrative customs procedures and cargo damage. China joined the TIR Convention in July 2016.

The opening of this TIR route will provide businesses in Chongqing and neighboring areas with a more efficient and flexible cross-border logistics solution for developing into the Central Asian market. It will also strengthen Chongqing's role as an international logistics hub and further promote logistics connectivity between Chongqing and Central Asia.

Novosibirsk, October 16, 2025: The ninth Moscow international ranking "Three University Missions"In 2025, 2,581 universities from 165 countries were ranked, with the final ranking table including 2,000 universities from 112 countries, including 156 universities from Russia. NSU ranked 238th globally, moving up 3 spots from last year, and retained its 6th place in Russia. The top 10 Russian universities also included Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Higher School of Economics, Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, Tomsk State University, Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, Bauman Moscow State Technical University, and MISiS.

The ranking methodology includes an assessment of 16 indicators, which are grouped into three groups: education (45%), science (25%), and university and society (30%). The "education" and "science" groups consist of four indicators, while the "university and society" group consists of eight indicators.

According to the ranking's compilers, Russian universities improved their positions thanks to the third group—"university and society." Specifically, a significant increase was seen in the "number of massive online courses" indicator. Furthermore, Russian universities proved competitive in two indicators within the "education" group: "share of international students" and "number of student victories in international student competitions."

"International engagement is a key focus at NSU. Currently, the university has approximately 1,700 students from 60 countries, and we collaborate with 98 partner universities in 21 countries. We have significantly increased our cooperation with China, where we currently have 14 partner universities and 20 dual degree programs," commented NSU Rector and RAS Academician Mikhail Fedoruk.

Thus, in September, a new joint undergraduate program in physics was launched with Chongqing University, with a pilot enrollment of 80 students. NSU is also launching new dual-degree programs and increasing the number of Chinese students within the Sino-Russian Institute, a joint project with Heilongjiang University. Furthermore, over the past two years, NSU has strengthened its collaboration with West African countries.

"Our students demonstrate excellent results in international competitions. For example, this year our team won a gold medal at the prestigious SynBio Challenge synthetic biology competition in China, and at the 32nd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMC-2025), the NSU student team achieved its best result in 10 years. This further confirms that NSU attracts some of the strongest students in the country and has built a unique education system based on strong fundamental training," added Mykhailo Fedoruk.

BEIJING, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) — China is firmly committed to safeguarding its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, and believes that maritime disputes should be resolved peacefully through negotiations and consultations between the countries directly concerned, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said.

"Any provocations or threats in this regard will be futile and will lead to nothing," the diplomat emphasized at a press conference on Wednesday, commenting on recent statements by a US State Department spokesperson regarding the South China Sea.

As Lin Jian pointed out, all the available facts and evidence indicate that the Philippines was the first to provoke China's territorial sovereignty, while the United States, ignoring the facts, is making unfair accusations in an attempt to denigrate China's legitimate actions to protect its rights and intimidate China with the "United States-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty."

These attempts have once again exposed the American side's malicious intent to incite confrontation and destabilize the South China Sea, and have also demonstrated once again that the United States is the biggest source of risk to undermining regional stability, he concluded. -0-
