HANOI, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — Some 2.08 million people visited Vietnam's capital Hanoi during the four-day National Day celebration from Saturday to Tuesday, three times the number in the same period last year, the Vietnam News Agency reported Tuesday.

The city's tourism revenue reached about 4.5 trillion Vietnamese dong (US$172.1 million) during the holiday, up 80 percent from last year, state media reported.

The average occupancy rate for hotels in the three- to five-star category was 83 percent, with many hotels fully booked on Monday, the reports said.

The Hanoi Department of Tourism said tourist sites in the city remained safe and orderly throughout the holiday period, adding that efforts had been stepped up to ensure smooth traffic flow, public sanitation and quality visitor services.

ANTANANARIVO, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — An official ceremony to return colonial-era relics from France was held in Madagascar's capital Antananarivo on Tuesday.

Three skulls of the Sakalava ethnic group, one believed to have belonged to King Toera and two to his warriors, have been returned to Madagascar after 128 years in France.

“Today we pay tribute to the heroes who sacrificed themselves for their country, and in particular to the courageous struggle that King Toera led in Ambiki (in western Madagascar) in August 1897 against the French colonialists,” Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina said during the ceremony.

Stressing that history cannot be forgotten, he noted: “The return of the relics allows us to understand that the memory of those who fought for their country will never fade.”

“She lives on in our hearts, reminding us of our duty to preserve this heritage and build a united and prosperous nation,” he said. “Making Madagascar a prosperous and respected country, steadily developing and occupying its rightful place on all fronts, is the task we have set ourselves and the goal we must achieve.”

The skulls were officially handed over to Madagascar at a ceremony held at the French Ministry of Culture in late August. Following the official ceremony in Antananarivo, they will be transported later this week to the Menabe region in western Madagascar for burial.

SAO PAULO, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has the right to a fair trial for allegedly trying to overthrow the government after losing the 2022 presidential election, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Tuesday.

BEIJING, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — The rejuvenation of the Chinese nation cannot be stopped, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Wednesday as the country marked the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

The victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, a great and exhausting war, was a complete victory for China in repelling an external invasion for the first time since the beginning of modern history, Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, said in a speech at a grand gathering held in Beijing to mark Victory Day.

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — Eighteen people have been killed and 29 others injured in floods and rain-related incidents in Pakistan in the past 24 hours, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Tuesday.

The eastern province of Punjab and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir each reported seven deaths, while the northern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported four, the ministry said.

Causes of death include drowning due to flooding, structural collapse and accidental electrocution due to rising water levels in urban and suburban areas.

KABUL, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — The death toll from a powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake that hit eastern Afghanistan has risen to 1,411 in Kunar province alone, with 3,124 injured, Afghan interim government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Tuesday.

On his page on the social network X, the official wrote that the earthquake primarily affected the city of Asadabad, the administrative center of Kunar province, and the districts of Nurgal, Suki, Vatapur, Chapa Dara and Pech Dara. According to him, 5,412 residential buildings were destroyed in these districts.
