Nanning, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) — The 22nd China-ASEAN Expo and China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit opened Wednesday in Nanning, capital of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, focusing on technological and economic cooperation between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

The 5-day event covered nearly 160,000 square meters of exhibition space, with more than 3,200 companies from 60 countries participating.

For the first time, a new 10,000 square meter artificial intelligence (AI) pavilion was created at the China-ASEAN Expo, making it the largest thematic pavilion in the history of the Expo.

This year's emphasis on artificial intelligence comes amid the upcoming upgrade to version 3.0 of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA), the world's largest developing-economy free trade area. Negotiations concluded in May, and the official signing of the documents is expected before the end of the year.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vice President Han Zheng said that the China-ASEAN comprehensive strategic partnership has continuously deepened in recent years, becoming the most successful and dynamic model of regional cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region and a shining example of advancing the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

He expressed hope that all parties would make full use of the China-ASEAN Expo and the China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit to jointly share opportunities and move forward towards a better future.

Over the past two decades, the China-ASEAN Expo has become more than just a platform for trade and investment. It has become a catalyst for deeper integration, innovation, and long-term growth, noted ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Horn.

CAFTA 3.0 sends a strong signal that ASEAN and China remain committed to maintaining a rules-based trading system, even amid rising geopolitical tensions and global uncertainty, said Kao Kim Horn, adding that CAFTA 3.0 goes even further by making technology and innovation central to cooperation, deepening supply chain integration and regional prosperity.

The theme of this year's Expo also highlights the role of technology in stimulating bilateral trade and cooperation.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Office of the Council of Ministers of Cambodia Vongsay Vissoth said the theme of this year's Expo highlights the "urgent need" for cooperation in building a prosperous and peaceful region through the use of digital technology and innovation, as well as promoting trade and investment.

Official data show that bilateral trade volumes have been growing steadily, with China remaining ASEAN's largest trading partner for 16 consecutive years, while ASEAN has been China's largest trading partner for the past five years. -0-

OTTAWA, September 18 (Xinhua) — Canada plans to begin formal consultations on the North American Free Trade Agreement (CUSMA) between Canada, the United States, and Mexico within the next week, CBS News reported on Wednesday.

The government will soon issue a formal notice requesting public comment and feedback on CUSMA, the office of Dominic LeBlanc, the minister responsible for Canada-U.S. trade, said in a statement.

Canada will engage with its industry leaders, provinces and territories, and Indigenous partners to prepare for a review of the agreement, the statement added.

Mexico's Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard released a video on Wednesday announcing that the country is also launching a public consultation process.

On Tuesday, the United States announced the formal launch of consultations to assess the agreement's progress over the past five years. This move will kick off a months-long process, signaling that formal negotiations to revise CUSMA could begin in early 2026, the statement said.

CUSMA, which came into force on July 1, 2020, provides for a “joint review” to be conducted in six years. –0–

SHENYANG, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) — On Thursday, the 94th anniversary of the September 18 Incident was commemorated in northeast China with the ringing of bells and the wailing of sirens. The events of September 18, 1931, marked the beginning of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

Hundreds of people, including veterans and their relatives, gathered in the square in front of the Shenyang September 18th History Museum in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning Province, northeast China, to honor the memory of those who participated in the war against Japanese aggressors.

At exactly 9:18 a.m., 14 representatives from various walks of life rang a giant bell 14 times, symbolizing the 14 years of courageous struggle of the Chinese people against the Japanese invaders.

The wail of air raid sirens pierced the sky, sounding for three minutes. Vehicle horns blared throughout the city, and pedestrians, heads bowed in silence, stood still to pay their respects.

Since 1995, Shenyang has annually commemorated the events of September 18, 1931, with the wail of sirens.

On September 18, 1931, the Japanese Kwantung Army blew up a Japanese-controlled section of the railway near today's Shenyang, falsely blaming Chinese troops for the incident, which served as the pretext for the Japanese aggression against China. -0-

UN, September 18 /Xinhua/ — Escalating Israeli bombing and ground operations in the Gaza Strip are leading to mounting Palestinian casualties, UN humanitarian agencies said on Wednesday.

The Ar-Rantisi Children's Hospital in the Gaza Strip was hit by multiple attacks overnight, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported, citing Gaza health authorities. The building housed 80 patients, including 12 children and infants in intensive care. Half of the patients and their caregivers were forced to flee for safety amid the shelling.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) stated that the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip is forcing women to give birth on the streets, without doctors or clean water. According to the Fund, 23,000 women are left without medical care, and approximately 15 babies are born every week without medical assistance.

According to OCHA, its humanitarian partners reported that 80 health posts and primary health centres providing outpatient sexual and reproductive health services have been damaged since the ceasefire collapsed in March, with 65 of them no longer functioning.

On Wednesday, the Israeli army ordered residents to leave Gaza City within the next 48 hours and move south through a temporary corridor, OCHA said.

Thousands of people continue to flee amid intense fighting. Roads are congested, people are starving, and children are in shock, the report says.

From Monday to Tuesday, UN humanitarian partners monitoring displacement in Gaza recorded nearly 40,000 southward movements. Since mid-August, nearly 200,000 displacements have been recorded, with many women, children, and elderly people forced to walk for hours.

“The issuance of movement orders does not relieve parties to the conflict of their responsibilities to protect civilians during hostilities,” OCHA said.

On Tuesday, two humanitarian missions to collect food at Gaza crossings were either cancelled or denied. Other missions were carried out but encountered obstacles on the ground, the ministry added.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) — With the 22nd China-ASEAN Expo and the China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit held at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in south China's Guangdong Province, there has been a significant increase in passenger traffic from ASEAN countries this year.

According to data from the Baiyun Airport border control point, as of the end of September 16, the airport had already handled approximately 1.5 million arriving and departing passengers from ASEAN member countries since the beginning of 2025, representing a 42.6 percent increase year-on-year. Tourists accounted for 70.5 percent of this total, a 60 percent increase year-on-year.

Over the past two years, China has successively introduced reciprocal visa-free travel with three ASEAN countries – Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand – and this policy has contributed to the growth of people-to-people exchanges between China and ASEAN.

"The flight from Bangkok to Guangzhou takes just over three hours. Since the introduction of the visa-free regime, I've been visiting China every month to purchase electronic goods, and the customs clearance process is incredibly convenient," Thai businessman Somchai Chanthawani told Xinhua News Agency on Wednesday after completing the necessary entry procedures at Baiyun Airport.

Since the beginning of this year, almost 500,000 people from ASEAN member countries have entered China through the airport's checkpoint under the visa-free regime, which is 61.3 percent more than the previous year.

According to the Baiyun Airport border control point, the most frequent travelers to China came from Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. During the reporting period, passenger traffic between China and Malaysia totaled 291,000, between China and Singapore 117,000, and between China and Thailand 104,000, with year-on-year growth rates of over 41 percent, 53 percent, and 67 percent, respectively.

As trade and economic cooperation between China and ASEAN deepens, and amid growing demand for travel to China due to the country's updated visa policy, the number of air routes to ASEAN countries from Guangzhou Baiyun Airport is steadily growing. Currently, over 100 scheduled passenger flights connect Guangzhou with cities in ASEAN countries each week.

To cope with the influx of air passengers ahead of the China-ASEAN Expo, the port has implemented paperless customs clearance procedures, and its staff, speaking Vietnamese, Thai, Malay and other languages, provide multilingual services, thereby improving the traveler experience. -0-
