Beijing, September 18 (Xinhua) — A Chinese-Russian popular science event titled "Lecture on Airspace" was held recently in Heihe City, Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, for teenagers and young adults from both countries.

According to a report published Thursday on the news portal chinanews.com.cn, the event was jointly organized by the Heilongjiang Provincial Association of Science and Technology and the Heihe City Party Committee and Government as part of a China-Russia exhibition to enhance scientific literacy among the publics of the two countries.

The "Lecture on Airspace" aims to create a scientific education platform for young people in both countries, improve their scientific literacy, and deepen cooperation and exchanges in popular science between China and Russia.

At the event, Zhang Dexin, executive secretary of the Northeast Branch of the Union of Low-Altitude Industries under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China and professor at Harbin Engineering University, delivered a speech.

He paid special attention to the history of the development of the global aerospace industry, the outstanding achievements of China and Russia in this field, and the future directions of the aerospace industry, motivating young people to delve deeper into the secrets of the aerospace industry.

During the interactive portion of the session, young participants actively asked questions and shared their opinions on key developments in the aerospace industries of China and Russia, the significant contributions of outstanding scientists and their far-reaching influence, and deepened their understanding of aerospace science in their pursuit of new knowledge.

It's worth noting that the "Lecture on Airspace" was held simultaneously in online and offline formats. In addition to the main class at the event site, four subclasses were also created, two of which were in Chinese primary schools, and the remaining two in Russian ones, allowing the younger generations of both countries to immerse themselves in the study of aerospace science together. -0-

Combating desertification in northern China is boosting regional prosperity.

HOHHOT, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) — At 6 a.m., a pale light spreads across the Kubuqi Desert as Zhang Xiwang, stepping through the dew, bends down to pluck a fragile stalk of sandwort and lets its grains run through his fingers.

"Ten years ago, when the wind blew, the sand would reach your knees. Now the sand in my fist is damp, and the willows we planted last year are sprouting new shoots," said Zhang Xiwang, a 54-year-old "sand wrestler."

Behind him, endless photovoltaic panels glitter in the rising sun, while purple alfalfa sways below, creating a living picture of the Chinese model, which is constantly being improved.

The 10th International Kubuqi Desert Forum concluded on Wednesday in northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, bringing together more than 260 representatives from China, Saudi Arabia, Mongolia, Brazil and other countries and regions to discuss issues related to combating desertification.

In the past, northwestern China was under the rule of a "yellow tyranny." Sandstorms obscured the skies, and the dunes grew year after year, threatening the very nature of the soil.

In the late 1970s, China launched a decisive campaign to combat desertification. Under the Sanbei Three Norths Forest Shelterbelt Project, the world's largest afforestation initiative, launched in 1978 to restore the northern, northwestern, and northeastern regions, approximately 480 million mu (approximately 32 million hectares) of forest were planted, increasing the forest cover ratio from 5.05 percent in 1977 to 13.57 percent, said Tang Fanglin, deputy head of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration.

On an autumn day on the edge of the Kubuqi Desert, 56-year-old farmer Wang Jianguo squats under photovoltaic panels, his weathered face beaming with joy as he watches the alfalfa bloom.

His home is in the Hanjinqi district of Ordos City, home to a photovoltaic base that manages the desert, which was once a sandy wasteland. In 2020, a local project was launched to combine desert management with clean energy development and targeted planting.

His family's annual income now reaches 60,000 yuan (about $8,421), more than three times their previous farming income, thanks to income from land transfer, daily maintenance of photovoltaic panels, forage harvesting, and selling alfalfa grown under the panels to cooperatives.

Tourism is also booming. Recently, 109 tourists from the Republic of Korea visited the picturesque Yinkengtala area in Ordos to enjoy activities such as sandboarding, camel rides, and dune bashing.

From June 11 to September 15, this picturesque area welcomed approximately 11,000 visitors from the Republic of Korea. The desert, which once terrified the world, is now becoming an attractive tourist destination, offering sand as clear as the sky and folk songs that seem extraordinary from the back of a camel.

The Kubuqi Desert, the seventh largest in China, is located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Years of greening efforts have transformed over 646,000 hectares into lush vegetation, restoring biodiversity and significantly improving the local ecology.

In 2015, the Kubutsi forestry community received the Champions of the Earth award, the United Nations' highest environmental honor. -0-

Ankara, September 18 (Xinhua) — Turkish Gendarmerie has detained 51 people suspected of links to the Islamic State (IS) group during a major counterterrorism operation over the past two weeks, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced on Thursday.

The suspects are accused of ISIS membership, financing so-called aid organizations linked to the group, and spreading terrorist propaganda on social media, A. Yerlikaya stated on the X social media platform, adding that the operations were carried out in 34 provinces.

According to him, several organizational documents and digital materials were seized during the raids.

“We continue our operations day and night, 365 days a year, to ensure peace and stability in every region of our country,” the minister said.

In 2013, Turkey designated ISIS a terrorist organization, blaming it for a series of deadly attacks in the country. Since then, Ankara has been conducting counterterrorism operations aimed at combating ISIS members and their activities both domestically and internationally.

BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) — The northern branch of the Palace Museum (Former Imperial Palace Museum) is expected to open by the end of 2026, a Beijing Youth Daily correspondent learned from the Haidian branch of the Beijing Municipal Planning and Resources Commission on Wednesday.

According to a statement, the main structure of the Palace Museum's northern branch project has already been completed. Interior finishing work has officially begun. This branch is located in northeastern Beijing, in the Haidian district. This district is also home to the former imperial parks of Yiheyuan and Yuanmingyuan.

The branch's total area is 102,000 square meters and will include 12 high-tech exhibition halls, including a department for the protection and restoration of cultural relics, an exhibition hall, a palace gardening center, a hall of intangible cultural heritage, and more. The northern branch will annually display between 20,000 and 30,000 exhibits, which is approximately two to three times more than the Palace Museum itself, which is located in the heart of the Chinese capital.

Currently, due to a lack of exhibition space, many historical relics at the Palace Museum, including massive furniture, carpets, and paintings, are gathering dust in warehouses, and many exhibits cannot be restored in a timely manner.

The design for the northern branch of the Palace Museum is based on cutting-edge technologies and green building concepts. Once completed, it will be a modern space for preserving cultural relics. The new branch will free up, restore, and protect the existing interior space of the Palace Museum, while effectively addressing the challenges of preserving valuable historical artifacts.
