Moscow, September 22 (Xinhua) — The First World Public Assembly "New World of Conscious Unity" was held in Moscow on September 20-21. Canberra, September 22 (Xinhua) — The Australian government's decision to recognize Palestinian statehood represents a step forward toward a peaceful settlement in the Middle East, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Monday.

SEOUL, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) — South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said his country would face a financial crisis comparable to 1997 if it accepts U.S. investment demands without any guarantees, Reuters reported on Monday.

"Without the currency swap, if we withdraw US$350 billion in accordance with US requirements and invest all of these funds in cash in the US, the Republic of Korea will face a situation similar to the 1997 financial crisis," he told Reuters in an interview on Friday.

Under a verbal agreement reached in July, South Korea promised to invest $350 billion in the United States in exchange for tariff reductions on South Korean goods.

At the end of August, South Korea's foreign exchange reserves stood at $416.29 billion. Seoul proposed a currency swap agreement with Washington.

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) — The leaders of the African Union (AU), the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) met Sunday at the UN headquarters in New York, reaffirming their support for multilateralism as the most effective way to address contemporary challenges.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, was attended by AU Commission President Mahmoud Ali Yusuf, European Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, as well as senior officials from the secretariats of the three organizations.

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday called on the international community to "put down our weapons, end suffering, build bridges and create stability and prosperity" in his message to mark the International Day of Peace, observed annually on September 21.

"The world cannot wait," the head of the global organization said, adding that this year's International Day of Peace calls on each of us to support this call.

According to A. Guterres, all over the world, in the face of the cruelty and devastation of war, people are dying, children are deprived of their childhood, and human dignity is trampled upon.
