SEOUL, November 13 (Xinhua) — Twenty-one people were injured on Thursday after a truck crashed into a sidewalk at a market in South Korea, Renhap News Agency reported.

A truck driven by a man in his 60s crashed into the sidewalk at a market in Bucheon, west of the capital Seoul, around 10:55 a.m. local time /01:55 GMT/.

The accident left 21 people injured, including three women in their 70s and 80s who suffered cardiac arrest, and nine others with serious injuries.

Fire services sent about 20 units of equipment and 60 personnel to the scene.

The truck driver reportedly told police that the vehicle's brakes failed.

The truck drove about 100 meters through the market area, then crashed into a store.

ANKARA, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) — The Palestinian Hamas movement has demonstrated its willingness to take constructive steps to achieve a lasting ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said here on Wednesday, calling on Israel to take the same approach to achieve peace.

Ottawa, November 13 (Xinhua) — Canada imposed new sanctions against Russia on Wednesday. They target individuals and entities linked to the energy sector, military capabilities, and cyber infrastructure.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced in a press release that the measures target 13 individuals and 11 entities under the country's Special Economic Measures regulations.

UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) — Kenyan lawyer Phoebe Okowa was elected on Wednesday to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to fill the seat left vacant by Abdulqawi Yusuf of Somalia on September 30.

F. Okowa will serve until February 5, 2027, the end of A. Yusuf's term.

She is a Kenyan lawyer and Professor of Public International Law at Queen Mary, University of London, and a member of the UN International Law Commission since 2023.

According to the ICJ Statute, judges are elected by secret ballot in both the Security Council (SC) and the General Assembly (GA).

To be elected, a candidate must receive an absolute majority of votes in both houses, which vote simultaneously but separately.

Chengdu, November 13 (Xinhua) — China's traction battery production continued to grow in the first nine months of this year. Amid the rapid global adoption of new energy vehicles (NEVs), sales of batteries for them increased 48.9 percent year-on-year to 786 gigawatt-hours (GWh) during the reporting period. This was announced at the opening ceremony of the Global Conference on Traction Battery Development, which was held on Wednesday in Yibin, Sichuan Province, southwest China.

According to published data, exports of these products from China in the first three quarters of this year exceeded 129 GWh, which is 32.7 percent more than a year earlier.

China is steadily strengthening its leading position in the traction battery sector.
