OTTAWA, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) — The city of Burnaby in Canada has apologized to Chinese-Canadians for "historical discrimination" and repealed discriminatory bylaws that affected them.

“I stand before you on behalf of the City of Burnaby to acknowledge and apologize for our historical discrimination against people of Chinese descent,” Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley said Saturday. “Today, we shine a light on the historical injustices and systemic racism perpetuated by the Burnaby municipal government and elected officials from 1892 to 1947, and we commit to ensuring that this dark period in our city’s history never happens again.”

The mayor added that the city condemns discriminatory policies and actions against people of Chinese descent and seeks to recognize their contributions to the city's shared history.

Three major discriminatory bylaws passed by the city between 1892 and 1947 were officially repealed on Saturday.

City Councilman James Wang, who played a key role in the reconciliation process, said in an interview about the work done: "This apology is the result of years of collaboration between the city government and the Chinese community. During the reconciliation process, we uncovered numerous historical manifestations of discriminatory policies."

“Over the past two years, we have established an advisory group and held over a hundred public events to gather community input and ensure that this apology truly meets the needs of the families affected,” he added.

Since 2005, the Canadian federal government, the provincial government of British Columbia, and the City of Vancouver, among others, have apologized for past discrimination against Chinese Canadians. –0–

BEIJING, November 17 (Xinhua) — China earnestly calls on the Japanese side to take back its erroneous words and fulfill its commitments to China with concrete actions, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Monday.

The diplomat made this statement at a regular press conference, commenting on statements by some Japanese politicians who called China's reaction to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent statements regarding Taiwan "excessive."

China has repeatedly stated its firm and just position on Takaichi's erroneous statements related to Taiwan, Mao Ning noted. The official spokesperson reiterated that these statements seriously contradict the spirit of the four Sino-Japanese political documents and fundamentally undermine the political foundation of relations between the two countries.

Prague, November 17 (Xinhua) — Euro Tea Expo 2025 concluded in Prague on Sunday, bringing together tea experts, exhibitors, and tea lovers from around the world. This year, special attention was paid to Chinese pu-erh tea and the Yunnan Province in southwest China.

During the two-day event, experts from China shared the history, fermentation methods, and cultural traditions associated with pu-erh tea through lectures and tastings.

The traditional tea roasting performance by the Wa people and the tea ceremony using a Sichuan teapot with a long spout attracted great interest from the public.

The exhibition featured a wide range of interactive programs integrating tea culture with physical and mental well-being, including lectures on tea, tai chi classes, master classes, and presentations from participants from Europe, China, Argentina, and Myanmar. Over 30 tea and teaware brands from across Europe showcased their products.

Discussions also covered sustainable tea cultivation, healthy tea consumption, and the link between tea and sustainable development.

The event was organized by the Czech Charitable Foundation for the Support and Development of Tea Culture. –0–

CHENGDU, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) — Chinese researchers have discovered a new species of ferret in a national nature reserve in southwest China's Sichuan Province and named it Mustela mopbie, according to the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The scientists reported their discovery this month in the international peer-reviewed journal Journal of Systematics and Evolution.

In July and August 2024, a joint expedition team including researchers from the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, West China Normal University, and Sichuan University collected three ferret specimens during a small mammal biodiversity survey in the Dafengding National Nature Reserve, located in Mabianyi Autonomous County, Sichuan.

A comprehensive analysis of genomic and morphological data led researchers to confirm the discovery of a new species. Mustela mopbie, as the researchers named it, is small in size and capable of penetrating narrow crevices and caves to catch insects and small rodents, a characteristic of this species.

The discovery of Mustela mopbie provides important information about species diversity within this group, and opens up new perspectives on how small predators adapt to different habitats through genetic variation in complex environmental conditions, the researchers believe.

The researchers' work has once again confirmed the great value of the Hengduan Range region, especially the mountains surrounding the Sichuan Basin, for the conservation and research of biodiversity worldwide. -0-

HARBIN, November 17 (Xinhua) — Since the Tongjiang Railway Checkpoint (in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province) opened in 2022, it has handled a total of 273 China-Europe international freight trains, carrying over 14 million tonnes of export and import cargo, according to the Harbin branch of China Railways.

The Tongjiang railway checkpoint is a first-class national border crossing. Since its commissioning in November 2022, the travel distance from this checkpoint to markets in the interior of Europe has been reduced by 809 km compared to the Suifenhe railway checkpoint, saving approximately 10 hours, effectively reducing traffic congestion at the Manzhouli and Suifenhe checkpoints.

Currently, China-Europe freight train services operating through the Tongjiang Port of China cover 14 European countries and connect over 60 Chinese cities. They primarily transport cargo to Europe from the cities of Changsha, Shenyang, Harbin, Shanghai, and their surrounding areas. The range of goods transported has expanded from coal and iron ore concentrates to more than ten categories of goods, such as auto parts, aluminum ingots, and food products.

The project to reconstruct and expand the capacity of the Jiamusi-Tongjiang Railway is currently proceeding smoothly. Upon completion, the line's capacity is expected to triple, and the volume of imports and exports through the Tongjiang Port will increase by more than 40 percent.

TEHRAN, November 17 (Xinhua) — Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday that the country is currently not enriching uranium, while stressing the country's right to do so.

"Currently, uranium enrichment is not being carried out in Iran because our relevant infrastructure has been attacked," he said on the sidelines of an international conference in the Iranian capital Tehran, according to the official IRNA news agency.

Iran's right to enrich uranium and peacefully use nuclear energy is "indisputable" and must be recognized by the international community, including the United States, the foreign minister said.

S. A. Araghchi stated that there are no “undeclared” nuclear facilities or uranium enrichment facilities in Iran, and all Iranian nuclear facilities are under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Commenting on the possibility of resuming negotiations between Iran and the United States on the nuclear issue, he noted that the current approach of the US government in no way indicates its readiness for honest negotiations on equal terms to protect mutual interests.

“What we have seen so far from the Americans has actually been an attempt to impose maximum, excessive demands,” he said.

Iran and the United States had held five rounds of Oman-brokered proximity talks on the nuclear issue and lifting US sanctions and were preparing for a sixth round when Israel launched airstrikes on nuclear and military sites in Iran on June 13, killing senior commanders, nuclear scientists and civilians.

On June 22, US forces struck Iranian nuclear facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan. –0–
