Chengdu, December 7 (Xinhua) — A new cold chain goods collection and distribution center for China-Europe freight train services has been established in China, aiming to provide services to the European and Central Asian markets. This was announced on Friday at the China-Europe Freight Train Service Global Partner Conference (Chengdu and Chongqing).

The center will provide cross-border cold chain transportation services for the European and Central Asian markets and will issue a plan to launch China-Europe cold chain freight trains in 2026.

According to Xiang Bin, CEO of an agricultural technology company in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province (southwest China), the first batch of locally produced apples was successfully exported thanks to China-Europe cold chain freight train services. The process from picking and sorting the apples to delivery to warehouses in Europe takes just over ten days.

The launch of the above-mentioned center will further expand the service capabilities of China-Europe trains departing from Chengdu and Chongqing, and contribute to the improvement of the cross-border supply chain system and increased openness in the region. -0-

CHENGDU, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) — French President Emmanuel Macron stressed the importance of cooperation and mutual understanding in overcoming modern challenges in a speech at a university in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

The French leader concluded his three-day state visit to China with a speech at Sichuan University on Friday.

Emmanuel Macron noted that humanity is currently undergoing profound transformations affecting our way of life, our environment, and the future of the planet. He emphasized the need not only to cooperate but also to strengthen mutual understanding, get to know each other better, and engage in collective reflection to develop practical solutions to pressing issues such as the climate crisis.

As the President added, humanity has the capacity to reach beyond national and geographical boundaries and develop a common agenda for peace, prosperity and climate, based on respect and a sense of responsibility, which will enable all people to move forward.

In recent years, Sichuan University has established and deepened partnerships with a number of higher education institutions in France, including the Paris Institute of Political Studies, the University of Paris-Nanterre, the University of Toulouse, and the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations.

In 1981, Chengdu and the French city of Montpellier established permanent friendly ties, becoming the first pair of sister cities between China and France.

After visiting the university, Emmanuel Macron met with French tennis players who were competing at the 2025 International Table Tennis Federation Mixed Team World Cup in Chengdu on Friday afternoon. He played a friendly match against Chinese athletes alongside the French team.

Moscow, December 6 /Xinhua/ — A ceremony unveiling a bust of renowned Chinese writer Lu Xun was held in Moscow on Friday at the M.I. Rudomino All-Russian State Library for Foreign Literature.

“Without any exaggeration, this is a historic event, because, as far as I know, this is the first monument to a Chinese writer in Moscow,” noted Feng Litao, Minister-Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in the Russian Federation and Director of the Chinese Cultural Center in Moscow.

The monument was donated to the Library of Foreign Literature by the Lu Xun National Cultural Foundation of China and kindly transferred by the Chinese Cultural Center in Moscow.

"We didn't choose this figure by chance. Lu Xun is the most famous contemporary Chinese writer. He is the creator, the founder of modern Chinese literature. Most importantly, he is closely connected to the Soviet Union and Russian literature," Feng Litao emphasized.

"We came up with the initiative to install a bust of the Chinese cultural leader because there isn't a single monument yet, either in Moscow or at the Inostranka Library (the M.I. Rudomino All-Russian State Library for Foreign Literature). We already have over 40 busts at the Inostranka Library, representing many countries, but China wasn't there. The Chinese Cultural Center in Moscow proposed Lu Xun because he's an iconic figure in Chinese culture," Marina Zakharenko, Director General of the M.I. Rudomino All-Russian State Library for Foreign Literature, told Xinhua.

According to her, interest in China and Chinese culture is currently growing significantly. "We launched a Chinese language course, and demand is constantly growing. We are currently actively stocking our library with Chinese literature because there is interest; many people want to learn Chinese and immerse themselves in Chinese culture," the library director emphasized.

Kyiv, December 6 (Xinhua) — The United Kingdom is considering transferring 8 billion pounds sterling (approximately 10.6 billion US dollars) of Russian assets frozen in its territory to Ukraine, the Ukrinform news agency reported on Friday.

It is noted that London, together with Kyiv's other partners, wants to develop an agreement that would unlock up to $130 billion for Ukraine. These funds would cover more than two-thirds of the country's financial needs for the next two years.

Meanwhile, later on Friday, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported that, according to Western media, the US is trying to persuade European countries not to approve a loan to Ukraine using Russian assets frozen in the EU. Washington allegedly believes these funds will serve as leverage for reaching a peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv.

On December 3, the European Commission presented two options for financing Ukraine in 2026-2027, totaling €90 billion. The first option involves an EU loan backed by the EU budget, while the second involves a so-called reparations loan financed by frozen Russian assets. These proposals are expected to be discussed at the EU summit in Brussels on December 18-19.

In 2026, Ukraine hopes to attract 2.79 trillion hryvnias (approximately $65.9 billion) in external financing to cover the state budget deficit caused by the ongoing armed conflict with Russia. –0–

ROME, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) — The Olympic torch relay for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo began in Rome on Saturday morning, kicking off a two-month journey to the opening ceremony of next year's games.

The launch ceremony took place at the Stadio dei Marmi /Marble Stadium/, an open-air arena decorated with Roman-style statues and located next to Rome's Olympic Stadium.

Around 9:50 AM, the final torchbearer of the 1960 Rome Olympics, Giancarlo Peris, carried the flame onto the launch stage. The flame was used to light the torch, after which Giovanni Malago, president of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Organizing Committee, lit the cauldron with it.

The first torchbearer, Italian Olympic champion Gregorio Paltrinieri, lit the relay torch from the cauldron to the applause of the spectators and ran half a lap around the stadium, officially starting the relay.

The relay was then carried on inside the stadium by Italian fencer Elisa Di Francisca and Olympic high jump champion Gianmarco Tamberi. Tamberi performed a "kiss of the torches" with the next participant, Achille Polonara, who carried the flame beyond the stadium and continued through the city.

The relay route in the “Eternal City” /Rome/ will pass by the main attractions, including the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Piazza Venezia /Venice Square/.

The torch is expected to reach Piazza del Popolo /People's Square/ around 7:30 pm, where a city event with music and art performances will take place.

Over 60 days, the flame will travel 12,000 kilometers across Italy, passing through more than 300 municipalities, visiting all 110 provinces of the country, and illuminating UNESCO World Heritage sites.

More than 10,000 torchbearers from various fields, including figures from sports, culture, film, and civil society, will take part in the relay.

The flame will spend Christmas in Naples, New Year's in Bari, and then return to Cortina d'Ampezzo on January 26, 2026—the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Winter Games opening ceremony. The relay will conclude on February 6 at the San Siro stadium in Milan.

SHANGHAI, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) — For people working in remote places, particularly on the high seas or in deep-sea and polar regions, limited access to fresh vegetables has long been a major concern, but now they will be able to grow their own vegetables and enjoy their own produce.

A smart farm designed for use on ships was unveiled for the first time at the Marintec China 2025 maritime exhibition, which took place this week in Shanghai, eastern China. This innovative product from China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) combines cutting-edge technology, a targeted climate control system, and an eco-friendly design concept to enable year-round cultivation of edible mushrooms, vegetables, and fruits on ships and other floating platforms.

Yang Wenwu, Chairman of CSSC International Engineering Co., Ltd., noted that the hybrid intelligent cultivation system for ships features a "vegetable-mushroom symbiosis" system. By allowing vegetables to absorb the carbon dioxide released by the mushrooms, the system creates an efficient gas cycle in a closed environment. This innovative approach reduces the significant energy consumption caused by significant temperature differences between indoor and outdoor spaces and frequent air exchange, offering a more sustainable solution in this situation.

The ship's farm can grow over 120 varieties of mushrooms, vegetables, and fruits in pesticide-free conditions, ensuring both product diversity and high standards of safety, purity, and quality.

The new development also boasts significant efficiency gains. According to Yang Wenwu, the best energy consumption among global competitors is approximately 10 kWh of electricity per kilogram of vegetables produced, while the innovative Chinese product consumes less than 6 kWh per kilogram of vegetables.

Chinese engineers also found solutions that allow the floating farm to withstand challenging conditions such as high corrosion and strong vibrations, providing optimal conditions for plant growth on board.

For people working on the high seas, in deep-sea and polar conditions, fresh vegetables were a luxury: deliveries sometimes arrived only once every few weeks or even months. And prolonged shortages of vegetables lead to serious risks to physical and mental health.

CSSC's new development has the potential to overcome barriers related to geography, climate, and resources, and become a source of fresh and environmentally friendly vegetables for residents of water-scarce islands and arid inland regions, the company said. -0-
