London, January 4 (Xinhua) — British and French air forces carried out a joint airstrike on Saturday evening on an underground weapons depot believed to have been previously used by the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization in Syria, the British Foreign Office said in a statement Saturday evening.

A Royal Air Force aircraft has reportedly discovered an underground facility in the mountains several miles north of the ancient city of Palmyra. The facility was likely used to store "weapons and explosives."

The British Air Force used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of tunnels leading to the facility. According to preliminary reports, the target was "successfully hit," the statement said.

BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) — Three key indicators of Urumqi Tianshan International Airport in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have reached new historical highs by the end of 2025, the Xinjiang Daily newspaper reported, citing a source in the airport administration.

According to data, for the entire year of 2025, the airport's passenger turnover amounted to almost 29.18 million person-times, an increase of 5.09 percent year-on-year, while the volume of cargo and mail transportation amounted to 331,800 tons, which is 40.65 percent more than the figure recorded at the end of 2024. Meanwhile, this airport also supported 194,900 departures and landings, which is 3.27 percent more than the previous year.

It's worth noting that Tianshan Airport has seen rapid growth in international and regional flights, up 79.88 percent from 2024 levels. This growth reflects the airport's continued growth as an international aviation hub.
