Wuhan, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) — Saturday marked five years since the completion of the Three Gorges Dam in central China's Hubei Province.

Over the past five years, the project has effectively realized its benefits in areas such as flood control, power generation, shipping and water resource management.

As an important clean energy base, the Sanxia Hydroelectric Power Station has generated over 423 billion kWh of electricity over the past five years, equivalent to a reduction of 128 million tons of standard fuel consumed and 347 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

Over the past five years, the Sanxia Hydroelectric Power Station has played a significant role in providing water to downstream regions during low-water periods, replenishing water reserves by 82.4 billion cubic meters to meet industrial, domestic and environmental needs in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

Over the past five years, cargo throughput through the Sanxia hydroelectric power station's shipping locks has exceeded 700 million tons. Annual cargo throughput has exceeded 150 million tons for three consecutive years, and in 2023, it reached a record high of 168 million tons.

SHANGHAI, November 1 (Xinhua) — China's 42nd Antarctic expedition set sail from Shanghai on Saturday.

"During this expedition, China plans to conduct experimental drilling on lakes located deep within the Antarctic ice sheet for the first time. Using domestically developed hot-water and thermal-melting drilling systems, we will conduct clean drilling and sampling in ice more than 3,000 meters thick," noted Wei Fuhai, leader and chief scientist of the 42nd Chinese Antarctic Expedition.

Antarctic subglacial lakes are characterized by extreme conditions, including high pressure, low temperatures, lack of light, and oligotrophic conditions. These conditions foster unique ecosystems and preserve a vast archive of ice sheet history and climate change. Therefore, studying these lakes is essential for understanding sedimentary processes and the evolution of life.

To further understand Antarctica's role in global climate change, expedition members will collect long-term observations in key regions such as the Amundsen Sea and Ross Sea.

Continuously improving our knowledge, ability to protect and develop Antarctica is not only an inevitable requirement for China, which aspires to become a powerful maritime power, but also a way to make new contributions to the promotion of the idea of building a community of shared destiny for mankind, noted Long Wei, Deputy Director of Polar Expeditions at the State Oceanic Administration of China. -0-

Beijing, November 1 (Xinhua) — From January to September 2025, the number of trains operating on the China-Europe and China-Central Asia routes departing from or arriving at the China-SCO Regional Economic and Trade Cooperation Demonstration Zone in Qingdao, Shandong Province, east China, totaled 962, an increase of 14.1 percent year-on-year. These trains carried over 650,000 tonnes of freight. Both figures reached record highs for the corresponding period, according to a statement posted on the official website of the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China.

During the specified period, 541 trains departed from the China-SCO Demonstration Zone to Central Asia, and 114 trains arrived from Central Asia to the zone, both figures increasing by 56 percent and 50 percent, respectively, year-on-year.

Currently, 22 regular international railway freight routes pass through the China-SCO Demonstration Zone, linking 54 cities in 23 SCO countries and states participating in the Belt and Road Initiative. The freight transported covers a wide range of goods, including mechanical equipment, electronic products, and everyday items.

In order to assist the China-SCO Demonstration Zone in developing international railway freight transportation between China and Europe and China and Central Asia, local customs are actively promoting a work model whereby enterprises can complete all customs clearance procedures at the departure point, effectively reducing the time spent by trains at the Alashankou and Khorgos border crossings (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Northwest China) and ensuring cost reduction for enterprises. -0-

TAIPEI, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) — Cheng Li-wun took office as chairwoman of China's Kuomintang Party on Saturday in Taipei City.

In her speech, Zheng Liwen criticized Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for manipulating the media to spread disinformation, incite confrontation and hatred.

She said the DPP uses the judicial system as a tool to suppress political opponents and commit political oppression, thereby seriously jeopardizing democracy in Taiwan.

She warned that Taiwan's advantages in economics, trade and leading industries could be lost.

Zheng Liwen noted that the DPP has been fragmenting Taiwanese society for many years, leading to internal conflicts and stagnation.

"Taiwan is running out of time. We can't sink any lower and allow hatred to spread," she emphasized.

Zheng Liwen promised that the Kuomintang would take on the mission of overcoming chaos and restoring order, promoting Taiwan's creation of a new economic miracle, and maintaining peace between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.

The Kuomintang Party report, which was approved on Saturday, emphasized that the Kuomintang consistently regards promoting cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation as its responsibility, as it contributes to peace, stability and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait region and meets the aspirations of the majority of Taiwanese people.

The report reaffirms the Kuomintang Party's commitment to the 1992 Consensus and its stance against "Taiwan independence," as well as the Party's commitment to maintaining cross-strait ties, easing tensions, and continuously promoting the peaceful development of cross-strait ties. -0-

Dar es Salaam, November 1 (Xinhua) — Tanzania's incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan, representing the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (Revolutionary Party, CCM), won the presidential election with 97.66 percent of the vote, the country's Independent National Electoral Commission announced on Saturday.

Thus, S.S. Hassan became the first woman elected president of Tanzania. She assumed her first term as president in March 2021, following the death of then-leader John Magufuli, under whom she served as vice president, from cardiovascular disease. This was a historic event for Tanzania, where supreme power had previously always been in the hands of men.

General elections took place in the country on Wednesday. They were marred by several days of violent protests.

In elections held every five years, Tanzanians chose their president, members of parliament, and local council members. Seventeen parties nominated candidates for the presidency, and 18 contested seats in parliament and local councils.

Gyeongju, South Korea, November 1 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Saturday that economies in the Asia-Pacific region should strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation, effectively seize new opportunities, confront new challenges, and jointly build a sustainable and bright future.

Xi Jinping made the statement in his speech titled “Building a Sustainable and Bright Future Together” at the second session of the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.

Currently, a new wave of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation is deepening, opening up new horizons for humanity, Xi Jinping noted.

On the other hand, the world faces weak economic growth and a widening global development gap, while challenges such as climate change, food and energy security are worsening, he said.

Xi Jinping put forward a three-point proposal.

First, he called on Asia-Pacific countries to further unlock the potential of digital and intellectual development in order to give the Asia-Pacific region a new impetus for innovative development.

According to Xi Jinping, economies should make full use of new technologies to expand their capabilities and advance, seize the opportunities of digital, intelligent and green development, and accelerate the creation and development of new-quality productive forces.

He called for efforts to promote the secure and orderly flow of data, deepen collaboration on open-source technologies, and create an open, competitive ecosystem for innovation.

According to him, the economies of the Asia-Pacific region must care for the well-being of all humanity and promote the rational and orderly development of artificial intelligence (AI), while ensuring its usefulness, safety and fairness.

China proposed the establishment of a World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization to provide public goods in the field of AI to the international community, he said, adding that China is ready to work with all APEC members to improve AI literacy and bridge the digital and artificial intelligence divide in the Asia-Pacific region.

Secondly, Xi Jinping called on Asia-Pacific countries to maintain their commitment to green and low-carbon development in order to create a new paradigm for sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region.

According to the Chinese leader, the economies of the Asia-Pacific region should remember their responsibility to future generations, strengthen the synergy between the green development strategies of all economies, promote the free flow of high-quality green technologies and products, accelerate the transition to a green and low-carbon economy, and vigorously combat climate change.

Xi Jinping noted that since announcing the carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals, China has built the world's largest and fastest-growing renewable energy system.

China also presented its national proposals for responding to climate change through 2035 and will implement a dual-control system for the volume and intensity of carbon dioxide emissions across the board, he said.

Third, Xi Jinping called for building an inclusive and win-win future to inject new dynamism into inclusive growth in the Asia-Pacific region.

He called on Asia-Pacific economies to always put people first and strengthen policy communication, experience sharing and results-oriented cooperation to fully implement the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, jointly end poverty and promote shared prosperity for all people in Asia-Pacific.

Xi Jinping said Asia-Pacific economies should make full use of APEC's traditional strengths in economic and technical cooperation to promote balanced growth among developing economies.

China will more actively improve the system that provides a full lifecycle of services for all Chinese people and promote the high-quality development of the population, the Chinese leader noted.

China will also promote initiatives to introduce artificial intelligence into healthcare and improve women's digital literacy and skills so that the entire Asia-Pacific region can benefit from APEC cooperation, he added.
