Hohhot, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) — The volume of China-Europe freight trains through the Ereenhot Port in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the largest land port on the China-Mongolia border, exceeded 5 million tons as of Dec. 15, 2025, up 22.7 percent year-on-year, setting a new record, local customs authorities said.

According to the Hohhot Office of China State Railway Corporation (CSRC), since the beginning of this year, a total of 3,807 China-Europe freight trains have passed through the checkpoint, transporting 433,600 TEU (twenty-foot container equivalent units) of various cargo, indicating an increase of 17.1 percent and 16.2 percent year-on-year, respectively.

In 2025, new routes were launched through this checkpoint, including connecting the city of Wuhu in Anhui Province (Eastern China) with Moscow and the city of Datong in Shanxi Province (Northern China) with the Russian town of Selyatino.

Furthermore, customs authorities have implemented a number of efficiency improvement measures. Border inspection time for each train has now been reduced to approximately 20 minutes.

As the only transit point for the Middle Corridor (Trans-Caspian International Transport Route) within the China-Europe freight rail network, Ereenhot currently serves 74 routes connecting over 70 stations in more than 10 countries, including Germany and Poland. –0–

Beijing, December 16 (Xinhua) — China intends to promote high-quality development of its maritime economy by strengthening comprehensive economic planning in its major bays. This was announced on Tuesday by Shen Jun, head of the Department of Marine Strategic Planning and Marine Economy at the Ministry of Natural Resources.

The country's coastline stretches for more than 18,000 km and is dotted with hundreds of bays, including the Bohai Gulf, Hangzhou Bay, and Beibu Bay.

"These areas serve as important hubs of intense coastal economic activity, repositories of rich marine culture, and spaces of significant ecological value," Shen Jun told Xinhua in an exclusive interview.

She noted that China, by promoting coordinated development of land and sea, integrated planning and high-level design, is striving to create a new model of high-quality growth of the marine economy.

The maritime sector has become a vital pillar of national economic growth. In the first three quarters of this year, China's gross marine product reached 7.9 trillion yuan (approximately 1.12 trillion US dollars), 5.6 percent more than in the same period last year.

Shen Jun added that China intends to accelerate breakthroughs in core marine technologies, cultivate and strengthen emerging strategic industries such as seawater desalination and marine biomedicine, and step up efforts to prevent marine disasters and protect the marine environment. –0–

Helsinki, December 16 (Xinhua) — Talks in Berlin involving the European Union, the United States, and Ukraine have raised hopes for a possible peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian crisis. Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced this on Monday, emphasizing that key issues, including territorial ones, remain unresolved.

A. Stubb expressed cautious optimism about a peace agreement, telling Finnish media in Berlin late Monday that the coming days and weeks would show whether a solution could be found to what he called "this difficult situation."

He said the most important development in the past 48 hours was what he described as the US commitment to provide security guarantees to Ukraine.

Territorial issues remain the most important unresolved problem, he noted, adding that “at least the direction is correct.”

Speaking at a conference on Monday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the United States had offered security guarantees and recent diplomatic momentum had made a ceasefire "possible."

Nevertheless, A. Stubb emphasized that the decisive issue will ultimately be Ukraine's willingness to make territorial concessions in exchange for security guarantees from the United States.

U. Kristersson described the meetings in Berlin as constructive. In a written statement to the Swedish news agency, he noted that Ukraine, the United States, and Europe sat down at the same table "for the first time in a long time" to discuss the possibilities and challenges of a peaceful solution.

He said many difficult questions remain, “primarily about territories and whether Russia really wants peace.”

"But now there's been significant momentum. We'll continue our intensive work in the coming days," he said.

A group of European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, issued a joint statement on Monday welcoming "significant progress."

The leaders pledged to work together to ensure reliable security guarantees, including maintaining the strength of the Ukrainian armed forces at 800,000 troops in peacetime.

Beijing, December 16 (Xinhua) — With the introduction of a mutual visa-free regime between China and Russia, people-to-people exchanges between the two countries are becoming increasingly closer and more convenient.

Against this backdrop, the city of Suifenhe (Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China) on the Chinese-Russian border recently launched a car rental service for Russian tourists, facilitating the implementation of a unified "visa-free car travel" scheme. This announcement was posted on the official website of the Suifenhe City Hall on Tuesday.

Natasha, a tourist from the Russian city of Vladivostok, welcomed the new regulation. She'd visited Suifenhe many times before, but this trip was a pleasant surprise. "Now foreigners can rent cars in Suifenhe, as long as they have a driver's license," she said.

The aforementioned service was reportedly launched by the Suifenhe Financial Investment Company in collaboration with local travel agencies and public security departments. The aim of this innovation is to leverage the new opportunities for tourism exchanges created by the mutual visa-free regime between China and Russia.

The Suifenhe City Hall announced that upon arrival at the Suifenhe border crossing, Russian visa-free travelers can obtain temporary driver's licenses in the border and customs control area. They must present their passports and Russian driver's licenses and watch a video about traffic regulations in China. Temporary permits are issued through a one-stop shop, significantly reducing waiting times for Russian tourists.

After receiving a temporary driver's license, Russians can contact the appropriate companies to complete the car rental paperwork, including signing the contract, paying the deposit, and picking up the vehicle. Once all formalities are completed, Russians can rent a car and travel within the Mudanjiang District, which is under the jurisdiction of Suifenhe City.

The Suifenhe-based Jiatu International Travel Agency noted that the visa-free regime has facilitated tourist exchanges between China and Russia. It will soon launch a travel product offering Russians the opportunity to travel independently by car within the Mudanjiang administrative district. Jiatu staff noted that such trips will allow Russian tourists to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture, savor local delicacies, and enjoy a variety of entertainment.

To ensure the safety and convenience of overseas guests, all rental vehicles in Suifenhe are equipped with a Chinese-Russian bilingual navigation system, dual insurance, and real-time GPS positioning system.

As an important cross-border channel between China and Russia, Suifenhe Port has launched the above-mentioned service, which will stimulate the further development of cross-border tourism exchanges between China and Russia and promote the development of regional tourism services in the direction of individualization, which will become a new highlight of Sino-Russian cooperation in the field of border tourism, according to a statement from the Suifenhe City Hall. -0-
