China International Import Expo (CIIE), China's first national import-themed expo, has been successfully held for seven consecutive sessions since 2018.

The 8th CIIE is held in Shanghai from November 5 to 10.

This year, 155 countries, regions and international organizations took part in the exhibition.

A record number of 290 Fortune Global 500 and industry-leading companies are expected to participate.

The exhibition will showcase 461 new products, technologies and services, enabling the vast Chinese market to become a testing, profitable and applied field for global innovation.

The number of exhibiting companies increased by more than 600 compared to 3,496 last year.

43 trade groups and more than 700 subgroups will be formed to conduct negotiations and purchases.

The total exhibition area will exceed 430,000 square meters, which will also be a new record.

Backed by the vast Chinese market, the combined pre-sale volume for the first seven exhibitions has exceeded US$500 billion.

SARAJEVO, November 5 (Xinhua) — At least 10 people were killed and around 20 injured in a fire late Tuesday evening at a nursing home in the city of Tuzla in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), local media reported.

The fire broke out at around 8:45 p.m. (19:45 GMT) on the seventh floor of the facility and was brought under control by professional firefighters and volunteers from Tuzla and surrounding municipalities, the nursing home said in a statement.

Medical teams from several local medical centers provided first aid to the injured, who were later transported to the University Clinical Center in Tuzla for treatment. Among the injured were nursing home residents, police officers, firefighters, medical staff, and nursing home employees.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, one of the deadliest incidents in the region in recent years. –0–

Washington, November 5 (Xinhua) — Two men were killed on Tuesday in the latest U.S. military strike on a suspected drug-smuggling vessel in international waters in the Eastern Pacific, Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on social media.

"Today, at the direction of President Trump, the Department of Defense launched a lethal kinetic strike against a vessel operated by a designated terrorist organization," he wrote in a post, alleging the vessel was carrying narcotics.

"No American service members were injured in the strike, and two 'narcoterrorists' on board the vessel were killed," he added.

P. Hegseth did not provide any evidence.

Since September 2, the US military has sunk 17 ships in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, claiming at least 66 lives lost.

The Trump administration also expanded the US military presence in the Caribbean since August. The current US military buildup in the Caribbean is the largest in the region in more than 30 years.

On Friday, Donald Trump said he had not yet decided whether the United States would launch ground strikes on Venezuelan territory, denying media reports that his administration plans to attack the country's military facilities.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has repeatedly condemned Washington's actions as an attempt to overthrow his government and expand US military influence in Latin America. Colombian President Gustavo Petro last month accused the US government of "assassinating" drug trafficking suspects at sea.

BEIJING, November 5 (Xinhua) — This year's 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE), to be held from November 5 to 10, will be the first major economic event held by China since the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC Central Committee). The event once again demonstrates China's determination to promote high-level opening-up and share development opportunities with other countries.

In the “Proposals of the CPC Central Committee on the 15th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development,” adopted at the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, which concluded in late October, China reaffirmed its commitment to further expanding institutional opening-up, safeguarding the multilateral trading system, and promoting the expansion of international economic flows.

In the eight years since the first CIIE was held, the Expo, by connecting international enterprises with China's vast market, has become an important bridge for foreign companies to share new partnership opportunities with China.

The 8th CIIE, boasting the largest exhibition space ever, will feature a record 4,108 companies from 138 countries and regions, including American companies that have held the largest exhibition space for seven consecutive years. This demonstrates the international community's continued confidence in the Chinese economy.

For companies targeting growth opportunities in China, an event like CIIE is unmissable. This year's exhibition will showcase some 461 new products, technologies, and services, including humanoid robots, digital consumption, the silver economy, and the low-altitude economy. This will provide tremendous opportunities to share the fruits of innovation and tap into China's expanding consumer market.

By participating in the CIIE, foreign companies can gain greater insight into the development of the Chinese market, trends, and consumer habits. Furthermore, they can engage in face-to-face interactions with their Chinese partners and consumers, facilitating the exchange of opinions and opening up opportunities for collaboration.

It is worth noting that this year the exhibition is expanding its specialized exhibition areas for goods from African countries with diplomatic relations with China, allowing their enterprises to fully utilize the zero-tariff policy.

The CIIE has been successfully held for seven consecutive years, with a total estimated transaction volume exceeding US$500 billion, helping businesses around the world cope with market fluctuations.

In the first three quarters of 2025, China's GDP grew by 5.2 percent year-on-year. With a solid foundation, high resilience, and enormous potential, the Chinese economy will continue to drive the global economy as it continues to strive for high-quality development.

Over the years, China's sincerity in providing development opportunities has been clear to all. Looking to the future, China stands ready to work with all parties to further promote common prosperity.

Los Angeles, November 5 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday re-nominated billionaire astronaut Jared Isaacman as his candidate to head the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

“Jared’s passion for space, his experience as an astronaut, and his drive to push the boundaries of exploration, unlock the mysteries of the universe, and develop a new space economy make him the perfect candidate to lead NASA into a fundamentally new era,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

J. Isaacman was initially nominated for the post last December, but the nomination was withdrawn in May due to concerns about his previous donations to Democrats and close ties to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who left the White House just days earlier.

J. Isaacman said he is ready to become the head of NASA and lead a new era of space exploration, including flights to the Moon and beyond.

The billionaire's nomination must be confirmed by the US Senate.

JINAN, November 5 (Xinhua) — Poverty reduction cooperation is currently becoming an important component of strategic cooperation between China and Central Asian countries. The second meeting of the China-Central Asia Political Party Dialogue was held on November 3 in Qingdao, Shandong Province, east China.

As part of this, a visiting meeting on the topic of “Concepts, Experiences, and Interaction of Political Parties in Poverty Reduction” was held in Dongmaiyao Village, Laoshan District, Qingdao City. Representatives of political parties and institutions from China and several Central Asian countries held an in-depth exchange of views on poverty reduction issues, demonstrating a shared will to intensify cooperation in this key area related to the well-being of the population.

Jiao Dian, Deputy Director of the China International Center for Poverty Reduction, noted that under the strategic guidance of the heads of state, cooperation between China and the Central Asian countries has borne abundant fruit. "Both China and the Central Asian countries prioritize poverty eradication in their governance, constantly supporting each other and moving shoulder to shoulder along the path to poverty reduction," Jiao Dian said.

After achieving a complete victory in the fight against poverty, China continued to consolidate its achievements by promoting comprehensive rural revitalization and ensuring policy continuity, operational continuity, and sustained efforts. This consistent national strategy has provided invaluable experience for the global effort to reduce poverty.

Deputy Chairman of Kazakhstan's Auyl Party, Kuanysh Seitzhanov, stated that the party's political program aims to transform Kazakhstan into an agricultural power whose agricultural potential would not only ensure national food security but also contribute to global efforts to reduce poverty.

He also noted that, as a strategic partner in the Belt and Road Initiative, Kazakhstan is actively developing its transport infrastructure, opening up new opportunities for the development of agriculture and the agro-industrial complex. Projects such as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route and the China-Kazakhstan Logistics Cooperation Base in Lianyungang are creating jobs and increasing farmers' incomes.

While the development opportunities offered by infrastructure construction are undoubtedly important, the complexity of the poverty problem requires countries to take a multifaceted approach. Kadyr Malikov, Director of Kyrgyzstan's independent think tank "Religion, Law, and Politics," noted that China's achievements in poverty eradication are impressive and emphasized Kyrgyzstan's interest in strengthening cooperation with China in the cultural, political, and social spheres. He argued that such cooperation could benefit the people of Central Asia through innovative, scientific, and technological projects.

The effectiveness of cooperation in poverty reduction should ultimately translate into concrete projects and improved lives. Nazira Mukhtorova, Chair of the Committee on Labor, Health, and Social Affairs of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, reported that Uzbekistan, drawing on China's experience, has implemented a number of pilot projects to combat poverty. These include the creation of mushroom-growing cooperatives and small processing plants, the installation of solar power plants in hundreds of villages, assistance to low-income families in marketing agricultural products, and the development of cooperatives for growing medicinal plants.

According to her, this exchange of experience is a clear example of pragmatic cooperation between Uzbekistan and China.

In July of this year, the China-Central Asia Cooperation Center for Poverty Reduction was opened in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (northwest China), marking a new stage in exchanges and cooperation between China and Central Asian countries in this area. China and the Central Asian countries will achieve new results in poverty reduction, bring greater prosperity to the people of the region, and move together toward a better future.

Marriage After Dark: China Reimagines Public Services to Meet Changing Youth Situation

SHANGHAI, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) — Next Friday, as dusk falls on Shanghai's Fuxing Park, rich in history and culture, the vibrant energy of INS Land, an immersive amusement park, will take on a whole new meaning.

The sprawling entertainment complex, usually filled with the buzz of eSports and music, will soon host vow exchanges as part of the local government's innovative initiative to transform marriage ceremonies into the city's nightlife hub.

This new collaboration between the Huangpu District Civil Affairs Bureau and one of the city's trendiest lifestyle hubs is the latest attempt to refocus public services on the younger generation, turning marriage registration into the beginning of a great romantic story rather than the end of a grueling process.

As China faces a steady decline in marriage rates, the state is ditching bureaucratic standards in favor of atmospheric ceremonies and moments worthy of sharing on the social media platform WeChat, in an attempt to integrate marriage into the vibrant night-time economy.

On Friday and Saturday evenings from November 14th to 22nd, temporary marriage registration stations will be set up at INS Land. A dedicated "concierge" will guide couples through the registration process, they will receive a personalized marriage certificate during a themed visual and musical performance, and then celebrate with family and friends in a designated location.

All this is done to create unforgettable romantic memories.

However, behind all this charm lies a serious national strategy. In 2024, the number of registered marriages in China fell by 20.5 percent, continuing a long-term decline. However, something has recently changed. In the first half of 2025, the number of couples tying the knot increased by 109,000 compared to the same period last year—a modest but significant increase.

Key to this is a significant change in marriage registration policy across the country. Couples are no longer required to obtain a certificate from their hometown or present a residence permit, known as a hukou. Now, an ID card is sufficient, making the process as flexible as the lives of many young Chinese today.

"The new system overcomes the limitations of residence registration and geographic boundaries," said Jin Lihui, director of the Marriage Administration Department of the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau. "It provides comprehensive coverage of applicants, service types, and locations."

Experts view this change as more than just an administrative one. Li Mingshun, a professor at China Women's University and vice chair of the China Association for the Study of Marriage and Family, sees it as a significant transformation of marriage registration—from an administrative function to a service provider. "This strengthens marriage as a personal civil right," he said.

This shift in attitudes is noticeable across the country. In the eastern coastal province of Zhejiang, local authorities are offering newlyweds "wedding red envelopes" or consumer vouchers. In Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province in northeastern China, city-sponsored group weddings encourage culturally significant yet modest ceremonies. In Beijing, a one-stop service center in the bustling Dashilan shopping district in the historic Qianmen district has reduced the entire marriage registration process to just 10 minutes.

Yet, perhaps nowhere is this rethinking of the "marital situation" more evident than in Huangpu District. This Shanghai neighborhood has transformed marriage registration into a kind of engaging experience. Previous initiatives have included a themed marriage registration website created in collaboration with the renowned jewelry brand Lao Feng Xiang, and a special nighttime certificate presentation ceremony during the Qixi Festival, held near the centuries-old Yuyuan Garden.

And this June, the district upped the ante: Every Saturday night, three lucky couples are chosen to participate in a personalized drone show over the Huangpu River, where they can watch their names light up the sky.

The transition to a "sweet economy" represents a strategic alliance between local governments and private enterprises. By holding marriage registrations in scenic locations, at music festivals, and in complexes like INS Land, the state is effectively leveraging the cultural capital of private brands to reconnect with young people.

INS Land, a seven-story complex billing itself as a "universal cultural center for the new generation," fits seamlessly into this vision. From club spaces to residential buildings, all its facilities create an attractive backdrop away from the bright lights of public buildings.

As China's population continues to shrink and age, and young Chinese delay or forgo marriage altogether, citing either financial hardship or changing values, the country is responding not with persuasive campaigns but with convenience and aesthetic appeal.

The revival of marriage registration reflects a broader understanding of how China is re-engaging with its youth: through innovations in public services and a genuine response to their changing lifestyles and aspirations. This approach is pragmatic, personal, and deeply embedded in consumer culture.

For the couples posing for selfies next week as the lights dance around them, the event will be less a civic duty than a milestone – memorable, shareable, and theirs alone.

The youth-focused transformation of China's public services shows no signs of slowing, and marriage registration is likely to take on increasingly sophisticated forms. As cities learn to express the meaning of marriage in language that resonates with young people, marriage registration, once dreaded as a formal visit to the civil affairs bureau, may regain—and expand—its former charm. -0-
