UN, November 6 /Xinhua/ — The UN and its partners are stepping up assistance following the earthquake that struck northern Afghanistan earlier this week. Deputy Representative of the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq announced this at a daily briefing on Thursday.

According to authorities, 25 people were killed and nearly 1,000 injured in Monday's earthquake, he said. The UN estimates that approximately 800 homes were damaged.

Immediate priorities include the provision of temporary shelter materials, warm clothing, cash for heating, and repair kits for damaged homes, said F. Haq. There is also an urgent need for additional medical support, particularly mobile clinics, trauma care in remote areas, and expanded ambulance capacity and referrals to specialist doctors, he added.

The UN and its partners are delivering aid on the ground, F. Haq reported. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is providing tents, shelter kits, and blankets, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and its partners are distributing clothing and hygiene kits, and the World Food Programme (WFP) is supplying food, including high-energy biscuits, he noted.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners have delivered emergency medical supplies and are assisting local authorities in coordinating and providing services, said F. Haq.

"The UN continues to call on Member States to support the people of Afghanistan in meeting their humanitarian needs. The $2.4 billion Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan is only 35 percent funded, with $857 million received to date," he said.

Chongqing, November 7 (Xinhua) — Liu Wanyun's family has passed down the arduous task of hand-picking lemons, bowing before each golden fruit. Farmers carried heavy sacks full of lemons down the mountain on their shoulders and backs. But now, advanced technology offers them new assistance and relief.

In a fruit orchard in Shuikou Village, Tongnan District, Chongqing City, southwest China, Liu Wanyun and his fellow villagers scurry among the trees, picking sun-drenched lemons as the morning haze is cut by the whir of a drone hovering precisely above the orchard before lowering its hook and lifting sacks of freshly picked fruit.

A drone carrying 100 kg of lemons glides down the mountainside and deposits them into the back of a waiting truck, after which the unmanned vehicle quickly returns for more. This scene captures the dawning era of human-machine collaboration, transforming the lemon industry in the mountainous city of Chongqing.

"A few drone flights are equivalent to a whole day's worth of work," Liu Wanyun said.

According to drone pilot Yan Qing, the orchard drone model can be used in scenarios such as spraying, seeding, and overhead cargo handling.

The drone, developed using the latest advances in artificial intelligence and computing power, is capable of autonomous flights without human intervention and obstacle avoidance in all directions.

"A single drone operator can transport up to 20 tons of lemons in a day—an amount that would take ten workers two days," noted Yan Qing. "This doesn't just reduce labor costs; it dramatically increases efficiency." He added that the drone charges to 100 percent in just 10 minutes and takes off again, ready for new tasks.

Drone-harvested lemons arrive at Snow King Agriculture (Chongqing) Co., Ltd., where robotic arms carefully place the crates of lemons on a conveyor belt. Within just 15 minutes, the citrus fruits pass through cascades of washing jets of water, intelligent sorting systems, and precise scales before being packaged and stored in a warehouse.

In the sorting area, where a dozen sorting lines work in unison, a digital system, like an all-seeing eye, assesses every lemon. It detects the slightest imperfections with near-perfect accuracy: from rot and dark spots to bumps on the fruit's surface.

"Our fully automated production line can process over 50 tons of lemons per hour, with daily output exceeding 1,200 tons," said Li Jincheng, the company's CEO. "Automation improves both speed and quality, which is a win-win for both producers and consumers," he added.

Across China, traditional industries are undergoing technological transformation to boost productivity and open new avenues for growth.

China, the world's second-largest economy, recently released an important document outlining its priorities for its 15th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development. The document, in particular, emphasizes the need to "achieve a high level of scientific and technological independence and self-sufficiency" and "stimulate the continuous development of new productive forces" over the next five years.

Numerous companies across China are accelerating their digital transformation efforts. According to the China Internet Development Report 2024, the country currently has approximately 10,000 digital workshops and smart factories. Of these, over 400 facilities have been recognized as national model factories for smart manufacturing, utilizing technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital twins.

This boost has contributed to the expansion of Tongnan lemons into overseas markets. In the first nine months of 2025, the Tongnan district exported 14,400 tons of fresh lemons valued at 176 million yuan (approximately $24.84 million), up 10.8 percent and 58.6 percent, respectively, from the previous year.

"We can now schedule lemon shipments to areas within a 40-day shipping window," said Li Jincheng. "Technology helps us meet the demands of our overseas customers."

Currently, the total area of lemon plantations in Tongnan is 320,000 mu (approximately 21,330 hectares). This year, lemon production is estimated to reach 350,000 tons, with a total value of 9 billion yuan.

"The next step will be to deepen processing technologies and build an integrated value chain from cultivation to deep processing of fresh fruit," said Hu Guangjian, head of the Tongnan District Committee for Agriculture and Rural Affairs. "We strive to make the Tongnan Lemon brand known far beyond China," he stated. -0-

The 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE), which opened in Shanghai on November 5, showcased 461 new products, technologies, and services. Since the inaugural exhibition in 2018, the total number of new products unveiled there has exceeded 3,000. The CIIE has become a powerful platform for observing China's high level of openness to the outside world.

One of the most notable products showcased for the first time at CIIE was crisp blueberries grown in the desert regions of Peru. The blueberries were shipped from the port of Chancay via a high-speed cold chain route and reached Shanghai in just 23 days, covering a distance of approximately 17,000 km.

"We introduce new products every year, and through the CIIE platform, we can continue to deepen our presence in China and expand into global markets," said Anthony Greenstein, CEO of Joy Wing Mau Asia Holding, which brought this South American fruit to the exhibition. Through its participation in all eight CIIE exhibitions, the company has secured deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

The exhibition is attended by 4,108 international companies from 155 countries, regions, and international organizations, with a total exhibition space exceeding 430,000 square meters. The enterprise section features 290 Fortune Global 500 companies and industry leaders, 43 trade delegations, and the number of registered visitors reached approximately 450,000. The scale of this year's exhibition has reached a new record across multiple parameters.

As a global public good, CIIE always shares China's capabilities with the world and steadily expands its circle of partners.

Sixty-seven countries and international organizations are participating in the national exhibition, actively promoting the implementation of multilateral mechanisms such as the China-CELAC Forum, the China-Central Asia Summit, the China-EU Summit, and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. The participation of companies from countries such as Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, and Peru reached a record level. American companies retained their first-place position for the seventh consecutive year.

Jeff Martha, Chairman and CEO of Medtronic, a global medical technology company, announced that the event will feature one product debuting in the Asia-Pacific region and five products debuting in China. He noted that China is not only one of the company's most important markets but also a key driver of medical technology innovation.

To unilaterally expand openness to least developed countries, the current exhibition, in addition to existing measures such as partially free exhibition space and tax incentives on the purchase of exhibited goods, expanded the African product pavilion. The number of participating African companies increased by 80% year-on-year.

Cashews from Gambia, avocados from Burundi, and shrimp from Honduras, first showcased at the CIIE, were "introduced as a group" at the Expo with the support of the UN International Trade Centre (ITC). Since the inaugural exhibition, ITC has supported over 500 enterprises from developing and least developed countries.

“This fully demonstrates the importance of the CIIE as an international public good and the vision of contributing to the building of a Community of Shared Destiny for Humanity,” said Ashok Gomes, Director of Country Programs at the UN International Trade Centre.

BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) — The Ganqimaodu border crossing in North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has seen rapid development and demonstrated significant trade potential during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), the Neimenggu Ribao daily reported Thursday.

According to local customs statistics, cargo turnover through this checkpoint exceeded 135 million tons from the beginning of 2021 to the end of September 2025. Specifically, in the first nine months of this year, the figure approached 30 million tons.

The Ganqimaodu checkpoint is a key hub of the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor and one of China's border logistics hubs. It facilitates the creation of a relatively convenient land channel for mineral imports from Mongolia, accounting for a third of the combined cargo turnover of the 14 border checkpoints in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

The rapid development of the Ganqimaodu checkpoint would not have been possible without the implementation of a number of innovative measures. Local customs implemented an intelligent vehicle inspection and release system, ensuring that each vehicle clears customs in just over 10 seconds. Remote customs control significantly increased the efficiency of customs clearance at the checkpoint.

"The use of an intelligent system has simplified customs clearance of goods, saving businesses a significant amount of time and money," noted one local customs official.

The Ganqimaodu border crossing has demonstrated strong innovative potential in cross-border transportation. On July 16, 2022, its administration launched a cross-border freight transport model using automated guided vehicles (AGVs). By the end of October 2025, AGVs had transported a total of 9.6 million tons of imported cargo, providing a significant boost to freight throughput at this crossing.

Infrastructure construction is a reliable guarantee for the development of the Ganqimaodu border crossing. On May 14, 2025, construction of the 9.91-kilometer cross-border railway, which will pass through this border crossing, officially began.

It will be the second cross-border railway line between China and Mongolia. Its construction is expected to be completed in 2027. Once operational, its throughput capacity could reach 30 million tons per year, allowing the Ganqimao crossing to further increase freight volumes and trade. -0-

Minsk, November 6 (Xinhua) — The Belarusian new passenger car market saw a significant upswing in October, according to data released by the Belarusian Automobile Association (BAA) on Thursday.

New passenger car sales in October increased by more than 15 percent compared to September of this year. "At the same time, compared to the same period last year, the market volume in October 2025 remained at the same level as in 2024," the BAA noted.

The association reported that the positive sales dynamics in October compared to September were largely due to the expansion of dealer model ranges. The market was driven primarily by the active launch of new hybrid and electric vehicles.

The Belarusian brand Belgee maintains its leading position in the Belarusian market, with 2,395 vehicles sold in October. The Belgee X50 holds the undisputed lead in the model rankings. Cumulative sales of this crossover since the beginning of 2025 have already exceeded 8,400 units. –0–
