Beijing, November 10 (Xinhua) — The 7th International Team Chess Tournament among members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) concluded recently in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province, northeast China. Over the course of three days, after 11 rounds of fierce competition, Team Russia claimed victory, Team China took second place, and Team Kazakhstan rounded out the top three.

According to local media, a thrilling final match took place between the Chinese and Russian teams, although both teams ultimately tied 2-2. However, the Russian players, with a total tournament result of 8 wins and 2 draws, defeated the Chinese chess players (7 wins and 3 draws) and won gold.

Thus, the Russian team has already won the champion title three times since the tournament was held, and the Chinese team has won silver five times.

Eleven teams from nine countries, including China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and Mongolia, participated in the 7th International Team Chess Tournament among SCO countries. Each team consisted of three men and one woman.

In particular, China was represented by three teams, including grandmasters with a maximum rating of over 2600 points, such as Lu Shanglei, Li Chao, and Ma Qun. Russia's honor was also defended by prominent young players: Savva Vetokhin, Artem Uskov, and Anna Shukhman, all U16 World Chess Olympiad champions, as well as International Master Roman Shogdzhiev.

The SCO International Team Chess Tournament was established in 2019 and has been held seven times continuously, with the first five tournaments taking place in Qingdao, Shandong Province, and the last two in Harbin. The main organizers of the competition are the Chess and Card Center of the General Administration of Sports of the People's Republic of China and the China Chess Association.

The organizers hope that such chess competitions will serve as a platform for the discovery of new models of exchange and cooperation between SCO countries in the field of sports, will promote cultural communication and mutual understanding between their participants, and thereby make an active contribution to strengthening the solidarity and progress of the SCO. -0-

MANILA, November 10 (Xinhua) — Super Typhoon Fung Wong made landfall in Aurora Province, eastern Luzon, on Sunday evening, the National Meteorological Bureau reported.

The Category 5 typhoon hit Dinalungan Municipality at around 9:10 p.m. local time (1:10 p.m. GMT) on Sunday, the department said.

After making landfall, Fung Wong will move through the mountainous terrain of northern Luzon and enter Lingayen Gulf or the coastal waters of Pangasinan or La Union provinces by Monday morning.

Interaction with the rugged terrain of Luzon will significantly weaken the elements, but its strength will remain as it crosses land, the weather bureau reported.

According to local authorities, the super typhoon had already claimed at least two lives before making landfall.

Fung Wong became the 21st tropical cyclone to hit the Philippines this year, exceeding the country's annual average of 20 typhoons. –0–

Sana'a, November 10 (Xinhua) — Yemen's Houthi militia warned Sunday that it would resume rocket and drone strikes against Israel if the Gaza ceasefire is violated, according to a letter sent to the Palestinian Hamas movement.

The threat comes amid heightened regional tensions that could undermine the fragile US-brokered ceasefire in Gaza, as well as renewed tensions between Iran and the US over protracted nuclear talks, the rebel-controlled Al-Masirah television channel reported.

In a letter, the newly appointed Houthi chief of staff, Yousef al-Madani, stated: “We remain true to our promise and will stand with you despite the sacrifices.”

From the start of the Gaza War in October 2023 until the current ceasefire took effect on October 10, the Houthis launched hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones at Israel, most of which were reportedly intercepted. The group also attacked Israeli-affiliated ships in the Red Sea, sinking four of them.

Last week, the Houthis declared a general mobilization, recruiting hundreds of tribal fighters, tightening security in their areas, setting up additional checkpoints, and detaining more UN staff on alleged charges of spying for Israel.

They also sent reinforcements to the front lines near the oil-rich province of Marib, controlled by Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces.

These developments followed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's televised address last week in which he said the Houthis posed a threat to Israel and that "work is underway to eliminate them." –0–

Shanghai, November 10 (Xinhua) — "This is our third trip to the China International Import Expo (CIIE)," said Lali Manasherova, CEO of the Georgian wine company Paradais, while presenting a famous Georgian wine in clay bottles.

The 8th CIIE is taking place in Shanghai from November 5 to 10, bringing together over 4,000 distributors from 150 countries and regions. It's worth noting that Georgia is participating for the first time as a guest of honor.

As L. Manasherova explained, wine in clay bottles is a unique drink that embodies Georgia's centuries-old winemaking traditions.

"Clay bottles containing the drink come in a variety of shapes. They can be decorated with relief patterns, painted, shaped like figurines, ancient amphoras, and jugs, reminiscent of the handicrafts of folk artists," she said, noting that wine in clay bottles is distinguished by its attractive appearance, which immediately evokes the culture and way of life of the country.

L. Manasherova was absent from the exhibition from 2020 to 2024, but she decided to return this year. "The growing Chinese market is very attractive. I see enormous potential here," L. Manasherova said.

According to her, compared to European wine brands, Georgian wine is likely less well-known. "But the Import Expo allows us to showcase our products and creates opportunities to expand our presence in the growing Chinese market," she added.

As Georgia's Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mariam Kvrivishvili, noted, participation in the CIIE will ensure growth in Georgian exports to the Chinese market.

“As part of the exhibition, we will be able to introduce Georgian products to local Chinese companies, as well as the private sector,” she explained, adding that all this will strengthen the position of our entrepreneurs and expand the possibilities for producing Georgian products. –0–
