OTTAWA, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) — The Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers concluded their two-day meeting on Wednesday by issuing a joint statement that addressed the Ukrainian crisis and the situation in the Middle East, among other topics.

JOHANNESBURG, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) — The Global South Media and Think Tank Forum and the China-Africa Partnership Conference will be held on Thursday and Friday to discuss ways to strengthen global governance and deepen China-Africa cooperation.

More than 200 representatives from over 160 media outlets, think tanks, government organizations and other institutions from China and 41 African countries, as well as the African Union, will gather for discussions on “Reforming Global Governance: New Roles and Visions for China-Africa Cooperation.”

During the forum, guests from the Global South will hold in-depth discussions on three themes: “China and Africa’s Commitments to Global Governance Reform,” “China and Africa’s Actions to Revitalize the Global South,” and “China-Africa Exchanges in the Framework of Global Civilizational Coexistence.”

UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) — Kenyan lawyer Phoebe Okowa was elected on Wednesday to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to fill the seat left vacant by Abdulqawi Yusuf of Somalia on September 30.

F. Okowa will serve until February 5, 2027, the end of A. Yusuf's term.

She is a Kenyan lawyer and Professor of Public International Law at Queen Mary, University of London, and a member of the UN International Law Commission since 2023.

According to the ICJ Statute, judges are elected by secret ballot in both the Security Council (SC) and the General Assembly (GA).

To be elected, a candidate must receive an absolute majority of votes in both houses, which vote simultaneously but separately.

Four candidates competed for the post. F. Okova won after three rounds of voting in the UN Security Council and four rounds of voting in the UN General Assembly.

The ICJ, based in The Hague, consists of 15 judges elected for nine-year terms. They are eligible for re-election. If a judge dies or resigns during their term, a special election is held to elect a judge to fill the remaining term.

Chengdu, November 13 (Xinhua) — China's traction battery production continued to grow in the first nine months of this year. Amid the rapid global adoption of new energy vehicles (NEVs), sales of batteries for them increased 48.9 percent year-on-year to 786 gigawatt-hours (GWh) during the reporting period. This was announced at the opening ceremony of the Global Conference on Traction Battery Development, which was held on Wednesday in Yibin, Sichuan Province, southwest China.

According to published data, exports of these products from China in the first three quarters of this year exceeded 129 GWh, which is 32.7 percent more than a year earlier.

China is steadily strengthening its leading position in the traction battery sector. According to a report published by the Equipment Industry Development Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China, six Chinese companies were included in the list of the world's top 10 traction battery manufacturers in 2024.
