On November 11, the website of the Brazilian magazine Forum published an article titled “COP30: Dialogue of Great Civilizations across Great Rivers.”
The article states that the Yangtze River is one of the cradles of Chinese civilization. To this day, the Yangtze Basin region maintains economic vitality thanks to its deep integration with other regions of China and the world. The Amazon River, however, witnessed the decline of indigenous trade. It later became the main conduit for rubber exports.
In recent years, trade exchanges between China and South America have brought new hope for development to Brazil. The economies of China and South American countries complement each other significantly. Economic integration achieved through the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative links the Yangtze River basin with the Amazon basin, opening up new development opportunities for the people of South America.
The exchange of experience between the Amazon and Yangtze basins also has broad prospects for environmental protection.
In the Yangtze River basin, the number of these endangered dolphins is steadily increasing, thanks to the work of the China River Dolphin National Nature Reserve in Tian'ezhou.
Amazon river dolphins are also facing the threat of extinction. Brazil can learn from China that environmental protection must go hand in hand with economic and social development, as people need environmental education to understand the importance of protecting the natural environment, as well as professional opportunities that will enable them to coexist harmoniously with nature.
In terms of carbon reduction, China is participating in COP30 with ambitious goals and impressive results: as of the end of July 2024, China's total installed wind and solar power capacity had reached the 2030 target, more than six years ahead of schedule. China is actively pursuing the strategy of achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality as a national priority.
China's success in reducing emissions is largely due to the rapid transformation of its energy mix. Previously heavily dependent on coal, the country has built up significant renewable energy capacity in recent years.
COP30 reminds us that exchange and mutual learning among civilizations are the only way to successfully combat climate change and build a community of shared destiny for humanity.
