Beijing, November 17 (Xinhua) — Heihe City in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province recently held a presentation in the eastern Chinese metropolis of Shanghai on its potential to promote China's opening up to the north, the Heilongjiang Daily reported on Monday.

The presentation, titled "Together Building a New Height of China's Northern Opening and Sharing New Opportunities for Cross-Border Cooperation," was attended by representatives of approximately 100 companies and chambers of commerce from across the country.

Participants discussed how to highlight the role of Heihe City, a strategic platform for China's northern opening-up, in promoting high-quality cross-border industry development amid the ongoing development of Sino-Russian relations and the deepening implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Ji Wei, Director of the Heihe Economic Cooperation Promotion Office, noted in his speech that Heihe, which borders the Russian city of Blagoveshchensk, is one of the first open border cities in China and enjoys extensive government support in the form of policies developed for pilot free trade zones, comprehensive cross-border e-commerce pilot zones, and cities where measures have been experimentally introduced to promote the prosperity of border areas and improve the well-being of local residents.

As the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) deepen their alignment, Heihe's cooperation opportunities in energy resources, agricultural processing, and cross-border logistics have expanded further.

In the energy sector, the city of Heihe has built cross-border power lines that allow it to import 8 billion kWh of electricity from Russia annually. Furthermore, the eastern route of the China-Russia gas pipeline passes through the city.

Regarding agricultural processing, in February 2025, the Heihe Highway Port was officially designated as the designated import control point for meat and chilled aquatic products. Capitalizing on the high-quality meat and cold-water fish resources of the Russian Far East, Heihe aims to become a "key hub in Northeast Asia" for the processing of meat and chilled aquatic products.

OTTAWA, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) — The city of Burnaby in Canada has apologized to Chinese-Canadians for "historical discrimination" and repealed discriminatory bylaws that affected them.

“I stand before you on behalf of the City of Burnaby to acknowledge and apologize for our historical discrimination against people of Chinese descent,” Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley said Saturday. “Today, we shine a light on the historical injustices and systemic racism perpetuated by the Burnaby municipal government and elected officials from 1892 to 1947, and we commit to ensuring that this dark period in our city’s history never happens again.”

The mayor added that the city condemns discriminatory policies and actions against people of Chinese descent and seeks to recognize their contributions to the city's shared history.

Three major discriminatory bylaws passed by the city between 1892 and 1947 were officially repealed on Saturday.

City Councilman James Wang, who played a key role in the reconciliation process, said in an interview about the work done: "This apology is the result of years of collaboration between the city government and the Chinese community. During the reconciliation process, we uncovered numerous historical manifestations of discriminatory policies."

“Over the past two years, we have established an advisory group and held over a hundred public events to gather community input and ensure that this apology truly meets the needs of the families affected,” he added.

Prague, November 17 (Xinhua) — Euro Tea Expo 2025 concluded in Prague on Sunday, bringing together tea experts, exhibitors, and tea lovers from around the world. This year, special attention was paid to Chinese pu-erh tea and the Yunnan Province in southwest China.

During the two-day event, experts from China shared the history, fermentation methods, and cultural traditions associated with pu-erh tea through lectures and tastings.

The traditional tea roasting performance by the Wa people and the tea ceremony using a Sichuan teapot with a long spout attracted great interest from the public.

CHENGDU, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) — Chinese researchers have discovered a new species of ferret in a national nature reserve in southwest China's Sichuan Province and named it Mustela mopbie, according to the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The scientists reported their discovery this month in the international peer-reviewed journal Journal of Systematics and Evolution.

In July and August 2024, a joint expedition team including researchers from the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, West China Normal University, and Sichuan University collected three ferret specimens during a small mammal biodiversity survey in the Dafengding National Nature Reserve, located in Mabianyi Autonomous County, Sichuan.

A comprehensive analysis of genomic and morphological data led researchers to confirm the discovery of a new species. Mustela mopbie, as the researchers named it, is small in size and capable of penetrating narrow crevices and caves to catch insects and small rodents, a characteristic of this species.

The discovery of Mustela mopbie provides important information about species diversity within this group, and opens up new perspectives on how small predators adapt to different habitats through genetic variation in complex environmental conditions, the researchers believe.

The researchers' work has once again confirmed the great value of the Hengduan Range region, especially the mountains surrounding the Sichuan Basin, for the conservation and research of biodiversity worldwide. -0-
