Tokyo, November 20 (Xinhua) — The Yokohama District Court on Wednesday ordered the Japanese government to pay approximately 3.9 billion yen (25 million U.S. dollars) in damages to residents living near Atsugi Air Base near Tokyo due to noise-related health risks and stress, the Kyodo News Agency reported.

The plaintiffs in the case included 8,000 people living near the Atsugi Naval Air Station in Kanagawa Prefecture and others.

Presiding Judge Nobuhiro Okada stated that the loud noise "caused harm beyond what is acceptable in public life." He acknowledged that the base's operations, located in the densely populated cities of Ayase and Yamato, had long-standing negative impacts on local residents and amounted to a violation of their rights, according to the report.

A spokesman for Japan's Defense Ministry's regional bureau said the agency "will work appropriately with relevant agencies regarding our next steps."

Lawsuits over noise pollution at the Atsugi air base, which is shared between the Japanese Self-Defense Forces and the US military, have been filed since 1976. –0–

How the TIR system deepens transport connectivity between China and other SCO countries

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) — Trucks loaded with goods under the TIR (International Road Freight) system are lined up at the China-SCO Regional Economic and Trade Cooperation Demonstration Zone (hereinafter referred to as the "China-SCO Demonstration Zone") in the east Chinese coastal city of Qingdao, ready to depart.

Truck driver Zhang Huaxu has been transporting goods on the China-Russia land route for many years. He believes that the TIR not only increases the speed of transport but also increases drivers' income.

"Even under the best-case scenario, transporting cargo by road from China to Russia used to take at least 15 days, and at a slower pace, it would take a month to reach its destination. Now it takes seven to eight days roundtrip, and drivers' incomes have increased by 30 percent," he told a reporter for the local newspaper Bandao Dushibao.

In the first three quarters of 2025, 342 trucks were shipped abroad under the TIR system from the China-SCO Demonstration Zone, a 97 percent increase year-on-year, according to data from Qingdao Customs.

"Previously, shipping goods from Qingdao to Russia required transshipment at the port. Each trip took about 20 days. Losses were high, and customers had to wait impatiently," said Zhang Shaoyong, a person in charge of Qingdao Yongpeng Huitong Supply Chain Co., Ltd.

Now all this has changed. Zhang Shaoyong has prepared a shipment of beverages worth approximately 300,000 yuan, which will be delivered directly to SCO member countries via the TIR channel, with the transit time expected to be just eight days. Moreover, over the past two years, his company's volume has grown by 30-50 percent annually, making Zhang a direct beneficiary of the TIR system.

TIR is an international system that simplifies the transport of goods between countries. Under this system, cargo is sealed at the starting point of the route and inspected only upon arrival at the destination. At intermediate border crossings, border crossing officers merely verify the TIR carnet data and the customs stamp on the vehicle. This reduces transit time and mitigates potential risks associated with administrative customs procedures and cargo damage. China joined the TIR Convention in July 2016.

The China-SCO Demonstration Zone has currently opened a number of international road freight transport routes, including China-Russia, China-Kazakhstan, China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan, and China-Belarus. These routes transport 40 types of goods, including food products, as well as mechanical and electrical equipment.

Due to the rapid growth of business, Zhang Huaxu's company has purchased dozens more new trucks and is ready to put them into operation. "I hope to switch to a new truck, drive faster and more reliably, earn more money, and help my family live a better life," he said.

With its unique advantages, the TIR system is becoming an important link between China and other SCO countries, as well as the wider international market. -0-

Construction of key industrial projects in Ordos continues to progress rapidly. In the Nalinhe Industrial Park of the Sulige Economic Development Zone, over 5,000 workers are advancing the expansion of the Zhuozheng Coal Mining Complex.

The total investment in the project is 59 billion yuan, of which 24.5 billion yuan is allocated for the first phase. The project aims to modernize the coal chemical industry toward more environmentally friendly, efficient, and diversified development.

Of the 146 planned construction tasks, 128 have already been completed, and several key projects, including the gasification plant and the fourth circulating water supply system, were delivered ahead of schedule.

In the Zhonggar Qi district, the Yidong high-tech materials project for kaolin production is also close to commissioning. The 230 million yuan project is the country's first standardized production line for extracting kaolin from coal.

Once operational, it will process 1 million tonnes of coal tailings annually, converting industrial waste into high-quality materials and creating a closed-loop recycling system.

Hoshun Junggar Qi, a major coal mining region with rich reserves of high-alumina coal tailings, has been actively shifting from waste disposal to high-value use in recent years.

More than 30 new materials projects are currently concentrated in the local industrial park, producing an increasingly diverse range of innovative products and forming an integrated industry-education-science ecosystem.

From cutting-edge coal chemistry projects to coal waste processing plants, these projects strengthen Ordos' industrial base and contribute to the city's high-quality development.

Beijing, November 20 (Xinhua) — On Thursday, a China-Europe freight train loaded with 55 containers departed from the Ereenhot railway crossing in North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region bound for Russia. This journey marks the 3,500th China-Europe freight train that has passed through the Ereenhot crossing since the beginning of 2025, according to a video report from China Central Television.

This is the first time and also a new historical high for this largest land checkpoint on the Chinese-Mongolian border since the launch of China-Europe freight train services here in 2013, in terms of the number of such trains handled by this border crossing in a year exceeding the 3,500 mark.

This year, new international rail freight routes between China and Europe were launched in succession at the Erenhot checkpoint: Wuhu-Moscow, Liulihe-Minsk, and Datong-Seryatino.

According to data, the annual number of China-Europe freight trains passing through the Ereenhot border crossing has exceeded 3,000 for three consecutive years. Since 2013, more than 21,000 such trains have passed through this border crossing.

As a reminder, the Ereenhot checkpoint is a key hub in the central corridor of international rail freight transport between China and Europe. Currently, 74 China-Europe rail routes pass through this checkpoint. These lines reach over 140 cities and stations in more than 10 countries in Asia and Europe. -0-

Washington, November 20 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed a bill requiring the Justice Department to release documents on the case of the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. The American leader announced this on the social media platform TruthSocial that same day.

D. Trump signed the document just one day after it was overwhelmingly approved by the House of Representatives. The bill then passed the US Senate on Wednesday.

The bill was introduced in the House of Representatives in mid-July, but Republican leaders, including Speaker Mike Johnson, delayed the process for several months.

The bill, known as the "Epstein Transparency Act," would require the Justice Department to release all unclassified records, documents, communications, and investigative materials in its possession related to the investigation and prosecution of J. Epstein.

This includes materials relating to Ghislaine Maxwell, who conspired with the late financier to sexually exploit underage girls, flight logs and travel records, and individuals mentioned or identified in connection with the investigation and prosecution of J. Epstein.

The U.S. Department of Justice may withhold certain information, such as victims' personal information and materials that could jeopardize an ongoing federal investigation.

The late financier maintained close ties with many prominent American politicians and businessmen. He was arrested on charges of sexual assault and died in prison in August 2019, officially ruled a suicide.

During his 2024 presidential campaign, Donald Trump promised to release documents on the Epstein case if elected. However, on July 7, the US Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a memorandum asserting that no "incriminating client list" exists, nor is there evidence that Epstein's death was a homicide. They also stated that no other documents related to the financier would be released.

Last week, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee released documents related to George Epstein that implicated Donald Trump. In response, Republicans on the committee released a much larger number of documents, accusing Democrats of selective disclosure.

Trump then ordered the Justice Department to investigate high-ranking Democrats associated with Epstein, including former US President Bill Clinton, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, a major donor to the Democratic Party.

American media are seeing this move as an attempt to counter the consequences of the recent publication by Democrats of documents related to the late financier and concerning D. Trump. –0–

BEIJING, November 20 (Xinhua) — The Third Hui International Wooden Architecture Festival, titled "Inheriting the Spirit of Hui-Style Architectural Masters, Joint Creativity between China and Russia," was recently held in Hefei, capital of Anhui Province, east China.

As part of this festival, students from Anhui University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (AUAC) and Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, using Hui wooden architecture as a common language, engaged in in-depth dialogue both on campus and in the field, and from theory to practice, according to a statement posted on the AUAC official website.

Hui architecture is one of the traditional Chinese architectural styles that historically predominated in the ancient Huizhou region of today's Anhui Province. It was also popular in parts of the neighboring provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangxi.

At the Hui Architecture Museum at AASU, teachers and students from China and Russia systematically studied the history of village development in the Huizhou region. At the ancient settlement of Xidi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, they experienced the cultural pulse of the millennia-old architectural tenon joints. At the modern Bishan Village Library, built on the foundations of traditional buildings, they admired the vitality of traditional wooden structures in contemporary design.

The festival's highlight was a competition for wooden structures, themed "Informal Communication Space." The winning entry, "Blossom," harmoniously blends the spire forms of traditional Russian architecture with the essence of Huizhou's finger-jointed wooden components. This carefully designed wooden structure expands from the center to the periphery, symbolizing the trend of bilateral collaboration, growing from the individual to the larger whole.

“We wanted to express not only the combination of technologies, but also the fusion of cultures and emotions,” explained Chen Hongbo, a member of the Chinese creative team for this project. -0-
