BELEM, Brazil, November 23 (Xinhua) — Global cooperation on climate issues remains vibrant and resilient despite the unfavorable political environment, Simon Steele, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said on Saturday.

"We knew this year's conference would take place in a turbulent political environment. Denial, division, and geopolitics have dealt international cooperation heavy blows this year," Steele said in a statement assessing the results of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30).

Despite this, he emphasized that governments around the world have reaffirmed their commitment to action. "COP30 demonstrated that climate cooperation is alive and well, supporting humanity in its fight for a habitable planet with a firm commitment to keeping warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius," he said.

"I'm not saying we're winning the fight against climate change. But we're certainly still in it and fighting back," said Steele, adding that 194 countries have demonstrated "strong solidarity" in support of climate cooperation.

He noted that the international community has sent a unified signal on the direction of global efforts to combat climate change: “The global transition to low greenhouse gas emissions and climate resilience is irreversible and is the trend of the future.”

S. Steele said the world must now accelerate the implementation of national climate plans and maintain the momentum achieved in Belém. "As we leave here, our task is to keep climate at the top of the agenda for another fifty years," he said.

COP30 concluded on Saturday in Belém, capital of the state of Pará, with the adoption of an outcome document entitled “Global Mutirao: Uniting Humanity in a Global Mobilization against Climate Change” after approximately two weeks of negotiations under the Brazilian Presidency. –0–

Dushanbe, November 23 (Xinhua) — It is shocking that the current Japanese leader is openly sending the wrong signal about attempting military intervention in the Taiwan issue—saying the unspeakable and crossing the untouchable red line, said Wang Yi, a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chinese Foreign Minister.

Wang Yi made the remarks in a media interview after concluding his visit to Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, where he held strategic dialogues with the foreign ministers of these countries from November 19 to 22.

China must fight back resolutely, not only to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, but also to defend the gains of World War II, won with blood and the cost of many lives, and to uphold international justice.

“If Japan persists in its delusions and continues to make the same mistakes, all countries and peoples who advocate justice have the right to reconsider Japan’s historical crimes and the responsibility to resolutely prevent the resurgence of Japanese militarism,” Wang Yi said. –0–

BERLIN, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Saturday that ending the crisis in Ukraine requires the consent of both Ukraine and its European partners, not major powers.

Speaking at a press conference during the G20 summit in Johannesburg, F. Merz emphasized that the conflict unfolding on the European continent and its outcome concern the security of Europe as a whole.

"Wars cannot be ended by great powers without the countries involved," he said, adding that ending the crisis could "only happen with the unconditional consent of Ukraine."

F. Merz said that foreign policy advisers from Germany, France, Great Britain and EU representatives plan to hold further consultations with representatives of the United States and Ukraine on Sunday in Geneva.

According to him, reliable security guarantees must be created for Ukraine. While acknowledging that there is currently a chance to end the conflict, Merz added that the parties remain far from achieving a mutually satisfactory outcome.

SANAA, November 23 (Xinhua) — A court in Yemen's Houthi-run capital Sanaa on Saturday sentenced 18 Yemeni UN aid workers to death on charges of spying for Israel.

The verdict states that the "convicted" will be executed by firing squad in public in Sana'a. Two other workers, including a woman, were sentenced to 10 years in prison on the same charges.

In a statement broadcast by the Houthi-controlled Al-Masirah TV channel, the court accused the defendants of providing Israel, the United States, Britain, and Saudi Arabia with information on the whereabouts, movements, and classified information on dozens of Houthi leaders related to political, military, and security matters, as well as information on missiles, including their launch sites and storage locations.

The court added that the convicted individuals recruited several citizens, installed surveillance cameras and received compensation for this, which led to attacks on several military, security and civilian facilities, killing dozens of people and causing significant damage to infrastructure.

In August, a series of Israeli airstrikes on Sana'a, carried out in response to Houthi missile and drone attacks on Israel, killed dozens of Houthi officials, including 12 "ministers" and Mohammed al-Ghamari, the Houthi military's chief of staff, dealing a major blow to the movement.

In response, the Houthis stormed several UN humanitarian agency offices, detaining dozens of Yemeni aid workers, including those sentenced on Saturday.

Last week, Al-Masirah TV showed footage of those convicted, who the Houthis claimed, giving “confessions.”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the Houthis, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all UN aid workers, and warned that obstructing humanitarian aid in Yemen puts millions of people at risk of starvation.

Since October 2023, the Houthis have launched a series of missile and drone strikes against Israel to demonstrate solidarity with the Palestinians amid the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Israel responded with airstrikes on Houthi-controlled targets and cities, causing casualties.

Gaza, November 23 (Xinhua) — Israel launched a series of airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, killing at least 22 people and injuring dozens, the Gaza Civil Defense reported on Saturday.

A Hamas source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity that the movement expressed "anger" to regional mediators over continued Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, despite Hamas and other Palestinian groups adhering to the ceasefire agreement.

The source added that Hamas called on the mediators to "intervene immediately to prevent the agreement, which Israel seeks, from collapsing," stressing that the movement and other factions remain committed to the ceasefire despite the escalation.

The source also warned that Israel's continued killings of residents of the enclave, along with what he called "slow pressure" by the US on Israel to restrain its actions, could lead the situation to potential chaos. -0-
