Beijing, November 24 (Xinhua) — China calls on Japan to clarify its so-called "consistent position" on the Taiwan issue, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Monday. She emphasized that if Japan merely vaguely reiterates its unchangeable position while constantly crossing red lines in its actions, such repetition is nothing more than empty words and undermines the one-China principle.

Mao Ning made the statement at a daily press conference after the Japanese side said during the G20 summit that China's claim that Japan had changed its position on the Taiwan issue was groundless and that the Japanese side had repeatedly clarified its consistent position to China.

Noting that the one-China principle is the unshakable consensus of the international community, Mao Ning said China calls on the Japanese side to take China's grave concerns seriously, genuinely rethink and correct its mistakes, and fulfill its commitments to China with concrete actions.

Japan should refrain from making mistakes and, moreover, ensure that its actions match its words, the Chinese diplomat said. -0-

CHENGDU, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) — The number of bird species at Qionghai Lake in Xichang City, southwest China's Sichuan Province, has reached a record high of 310 this year, with more migratory birds becoming permanent residents of the lake thanks to improved ecological conditions, local authorities said Sunday.

According to the Qionghai National Wetland Park Conservation Center, this increase is due to enhanced ecological restoration and reduced human impact. Yan Jun, lead engineer at the Xichang City Forestry and Grassland Bureau, reported that seven migratory species, including the coot, white-bellied moorhen, and Indian openbill, are now permanent residents.

Monitoring data showed that 120 bird species inhabited the lake in 2014, and by 2024, their number had increased to 302, reaching the current figure of 310 species a year later. Of these, five species are classified as Category I birds and 47 as Category II birds, including rare species such as the common sultan and scaly-sided merganser, which successfully breed on the lake.

Qionghai, the second-largest inland lake in Sichuan Province, suffered severe dehydration between the 1960s and 1990s due to land reclamation, resulting in a reduction in its area and a decline in bird species to just over 20. Recent conservation measures, such as coastal restoration projects, the relocation of more than 50,000 residents, and the creation of 20,000 mu (approximately 1,333 hectares) of wetlands, have restored over 30 km of natural shoreline.

Ornithologists have noted an expansion of habitat and increased bird diversity in the area, with Qionghai now ranked among the top birdwatching destinations in Sichuan Province. China, a key migration corridor for four of the nine major global flyways, has established more than 2,200 protected wetlands and 82 wetlands of international importance, maintaining stable wetland coverage in line with international environmental obligations. -0-

Abuja, November 24 (Xinhua) — Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Sunday confirmed the release of at least 89 people kidnapped earlier last week in the country's central region.

Among the victims who were rescued were 38 worshippers kidnapped during a church service in Eruku in Kwara state and at least 51 students captured in an attack on a school in Niger state on Friday, Tinubu said in a statement on his social media account.

It should be recalled that at least 315 students and teachers of St. Mary's School were taken hostage by terrorists in the Aghwara Local Government Area.

According to B. Tinubu, the abductees were released thanks to the coordinated actions of the security services, which he personally oversaw after the cancellation of a planned trip to the G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.

"Let me be clear: I will not back down. Every Nigerian, in every state, has the right to security, and under my leadership, we will ensure the security of this country and protect our people," he emphasized.

Nigeria's president has ordered police officers providing security for VIPs to focus on core duties as many parts of Nigeria, especially remote areas, have few police officers, making it difficult to protect the public.

He added that police presence should be strengthened in all communities given the current security challenges in the country. –0–

BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) — Wang Huimin, former head of the discipline inspection and supervision team of the China Securities Regulatory Commission accredited by the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) and the National Supervisory Commission (NCS), has been expelled from the CPC for serious violations of party discipline and laws.

The decision was made following an investigation by the CCDI and NCS, according to a statement released by the agencies on Monday.

The statement said Wang Huimin, also a former member of the Party Committee of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, had lost his ideals and convictions, deviated from the CPC Central Committee's basic policy of providing targeted assistance to those in need, abused his power and made rash decisions, which led to serious consequences.

In addition, it was established that he took advantage of his official position to obtain benefits for others in matters such as company share prices and career advancement, illegally receiving money and material assets in exchange on an especially large scale.

The statement also said that Wang Huimin, who was supposed to ensure discipline and the rule of law, himself violated rules and laws by engaging in exchanges of interests and accumulating huge sums of money and gifts.

Wang Huimin is suspected of bribery. His illicit proceeds will be confiscated, and his case will be referred to the prosecutor's office for review and prosecution in accordance with the law.

Beijing, November 24 (Xinhua) — A vocational training course for Mongolian herders recently opened at the Xilingole Vocational College in North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the Chinese daily newspaper Neimenggu Ribao reported on Sunday.

The purpose of organizing the above-mentioned courses is to further implement the Belt and Road Initiative, highlight the role of Inner Mongolia as an important bridgehead for advancing the country's opening up to the north, and promote exchanges and cooperation between China and Mongolia in the fields of agriculture and animal husbandry.

A total of 100 representatives from five Mongolian aimags, including East Gobi, South Gobi, Middle Gobi, Eastern, and Sukhbaatar aimags, are participating in the nine-day courses. The training covers the basic principles of livestock farming, forage preparation, wintering technologies, and milk processing.

Courses for Mongolian herders began at the Xilingole aimag vocational college in 2018. The main forms of training include professional theory, practical classes, excursions, and study tours. The courses introduce Mongolian herders to advances in such areas as animal husbandry and veterinary science, pasture environmental protection, and milk processing.

In May 2025, 39 outstanding Mongolian women selected by the Chinese Embassy in Mongolia and the Mongolian Women's Federation visited Xilingole Vocational College to participate in advanced training courses on traditional dairy and fur processing.

To date, the Xilingole aimag vocational college has organized 17 training courses and trained a total of 1,288 herders from Mongolia. -0-

BEIJING, November 24 (Xinhua) — Around 50 academic researchers, experts, and scientists from China, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, and other countries and regions recently gathered in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, to participate in the International Symposium on Desertification Prevention and Control within the Belt and Road Initiative, where they exchanged experiences and discussed expanding cooperation in this area, according to the Zhongguo Xinwenwang news portal.

Desertification is a serious global environmental problem, impacting human survival and sustainable development. Yi Zhijun, Deputy Director of the Secretariat of the Belt and Road Alliance of Scientific Organizations (ANSO), noted that desertification is linked to the environment, the economy, and human well-being, and must be addressed from an interdisciplinary perspective. This is inseparable from international exchanges and cooperation, and all parties must work together, he emphasized.

Symposium participants shared scientific knowledge and practical experience in preventing and combating desertification. Duan Weili, Deputy Director of the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), spoke about the institute's collaboration with Mongolia and Kazakhstan in combating desertification.

“We look forward to establishing close partnerships with more research institutions around the world and helping all parties achieve sustainable development by establishing joint laboratories, sharing field observation networks, and cultivating young scientific and technological talent,” said Duan Weili.

The symposium discussed the "Scientific Report on Preventing and Combating Desertification within the Belt and Road Initiative." It outlines the current challenges in combating desertification in Belt and Road countries and assesses the applicability and effectiveness of various management programs with the goal of developing a set of science-based management models and knowledge systems that can be widely understood and adopted by the international community.

The current symposium was organized by the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Belt and Road International Alliance of Scientific Organizations. -0-

SAO PAULO, November 24 (Xinhua) — Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Sunday that he is "very concerned" about the deployment of U.S. troops in the Caribbean and plans to talk to his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump to prevent a conflict with Venezuela.

South America is considered a "zone of peace" free of nuclear weapons, and "there is nothing to justify conflict," L.I. Lula da Silva told Brazilian media after the G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.

"War is pointless. Starting a war is easy; you just have to give them the opportunity… It's important that we try to find a solution before we start," he said.

Brazil has an important responsibility in South America because it shares a border with Venezuela, added L.I. Lula da Silva.

The US military has increased its presence in the Caribbean in recent weeks after Washington announced a decision to combat drug trafficking in the region, which allegedly leads to the deaths of millions of Americans.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hamid told media that a suicide bomber detonated his jacket at the main gate of the headquarters of the Federal Police, formerly known as the Frontier Constabulary.

As it became known, two terrorists entered the headquarters grounds, but the security guards on duty shot both of them on the spot, the police chief said.

He added that one of the two killed terrorists was a suicide bomber and his jacket, packed with explosives, exploded after being fired.

Eyewitnesses told Xinhua they heard intense gunfire after two explosions in the area.

Police, security forces and rescuers arrived at the scene and took the injured to the nearest hospital.

Police have closed roads leading to the area and urged citizens to be vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel in the region.

Security forces launched a search and rescue operation in the area and inside the headquarters.
