UN, November 28 /Xinhua/ — UN Secretary-General António Guterres is deeply concerned by the events unfolding in Guinea-Bissau and strongly condemns the military coup and any attempts to undermine constitutional order in the West African country. This was stated on Thursday by the UN Secretary-General's spokesman, Stephane Dujarric.

Stressing that any disregard for the will of the people, who voted peacefully in the general elections on November 23, constitutes an unacceptable violation of democratic principles, the UN Secretary-General calls for the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order, as well as the release of all detained officials, noted S. Dujarric.

The UN Secretary-General also called on all parties concerned to exercise maximum restraint, support democratic institutions and the rule of law, and respect the will of the people of Guinea-Bissau.

Antonio Guterres emphasized that disputes must be resolved legally through peaceful and inclusive dialogue. The UN fully supports the efforts of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), and the Forum of West African Elders to protect democracy, promote stability, and assist Guinea-Bissau in peacefully completing the electoral process and returning to a democratic path as soon as possible, the head of the world organization noted.

On Wednesday, Guinea-Bissau's armed forces announced on national television that they had assumed full state authority amid "attempts by certain political figures to destabilize the situation in the country." On Thursday, Major General Horta Inta-a was sworn in as President of Guinea-Bissau for a year-long transitional period. –0–

Brussels, November 28 (Xinhua) — European Commission Vice President Teresa Ribera, responsible for competition, accused the United States of trying to blackmail the European Union (EU) into relaxing digital rules.

On Monday, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in Brussels that his country might change its approach to steel and aluminum tariffs if the EU revises its digital rules.

In an interview with Politico on Wednesday, T. Ribera called Latnik's statement blackmail. "European digital rules are non-negotiable," she emphasized.

According to her, these norms are a matter of sovereignty and should have nothing to do with trade negotiations.

"We respect the rules, whatever they may be in our markets—in technology, healthcare, steel, … automobiles, standards," the European Commissioner said, referring to the United States. "That's their problem. Their regulation and sovereignty."

The US considers the EU's Digital Markets Act discriminatory because nearly all the major tech platforms it regulates, such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, are American. Washington also disagrees with the Digital Services Act, which aims to restrict illegal speech online. The US administration believes these regulations restrict social media platforms, including Platform X (formerly Twitter).

WASHINGTON, November 28 (Xinhua) — US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday his intention to permanently end immigration from "third world countries."

“Immigration policy has undermined” national progress, he wrote on the social network Truth Social, vowing to “permanently stop migration from all third world countries to allow the American system to fully recover.”

D. Trump also threatened to reverse immigration decisions made under President Joseph Biden and “remove anyone who is not a net asset to the United States.”

The White House chief also announced plans to eliminate all federal benefits and subsidies for "non-citizens" and called for the denaturalization of migrants, who, in his view, "undermine domestic peace."

The president said he would deport foreign citizens who are deemed a "burden on society," a "security threat," or otherwise "incompatible with Western civilization."

Trump's statement came after a man from Afghanistan shot and killed a National Guard soldier near the White House.

Pyongyang, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) — Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Friday condemned the military exercises between the United States and the Republic of Korea (ROK) and their arms buildup, calling Washington "a ringleader threatening peace and stability and undermining the strategic security balance."

The US and South Korea recently conducted naval counter-special forces exercises in the waters off Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, according to KCNA. The maneuvers focused on countering "infiltration" and involved a guided-missile destroyer, anti-submarine helicopters, maritime patrol aircraft, and other naval and air force assets.

Washington has deployed additional F-16 fighter jets to Osan Air Base in Gyeonggi Province to strengthen joint operational capabilities aimed at deterring North Korea and regional countries, KCNA added.

The DPRK "will continue to devote itself to protecting national sovereignty and interests and maintaining regional peace and stability through the exercise of its fundamental rights as long as the US continues to break its record of displaying military power that threatens countries in the region," the commentary said. -0-

Madrid, November 28 (Xinhua) — International tourist arrivals will continue to grow in 2025, according to the latest data released Thursday by the Madrid-based United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

According to the UNWTO's quarterly World Tourism Barometer report, more than 1.1 billion people travelled internationally in the first nine months of the year, approximately 5 percent more than in the same period in 2024.

Between January and September, the Asia-Pacific region saw an 8% increase in tourist arrivals. It continues to recover from the pandemic, although figures remain approximately 10% below 2019 levels.

International arrivals to Africa grew significantly, with North Africa up 11 percent and Sub-Saharan Africa up 10 percent. Europe remains the world's most popular tourist destination, with 625 million arrivals in the first nine months of 2025, up 4 percent from the previous year.

North America saw a slight decline of about 1 percent. South America grew by 9 percent, and Central America by 3 percent, thanks to strong demand on several fronts.

"In 2025, international tourism will continue to demonstrate robust growth in both international arrivals and, importantly, revenues, despite high tourism inflation and geopolitical tensions. Africa and Europe have particularly excelled," UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili stated in a press note.

The organization forecasts growth of 3-5 percent in 2025, noting that geopolitical uncertainty and high costs remain potential risks to the sector's prospects. –0–

NEW YORK, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) — The traditional Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade brought festive cheer to New York City on Thursday morning.

Millions of people lined a 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) route to see one of the most popular annual shows in the United States. It lasted over three hours and delighted spectators with giant helium balloons, themed floats, marching bands, and musical performances.

According to Macy's, the parade featured more than 5,000 volunteers, 33 clown groups, and 11 marching bands. Thirty-four giant balloons and 28 themed floats also participated.

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is a symbol of the holiday season in the United States. The company has held it annually since 1924, regardless of weather conditions, except for a three-year hiatus during World War II from 1942 to 1944. –0–
