JAKARTA, November 28 (Xinhua) — The death toll from floods and landslides that ravaged Indonesia's Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra provinces has risen to 174, with 79 people still missing and 12 injured, the country's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported on Friday.

As the head of the Suharyanto agency stated at a press briefing, the highest number of casualties has been recorded in North Sumatra province: 116 people have died and 42 are missing. He added that access to several affected areas remains difficult due to damaged roads and ongoing mudslides, which is slowing rescue operations.

“It’s possible that there are even more dead and injured in the landslide sites, which remain difficult to access,” Sukharyanto clarified.

In Aceh province, 35 people have been confirmed dead, 25 are missing, and eight others were injured.

In West Sumatra province, according to the latest reports, 23 people have died, 12 are missing, and four more have been injured. Floods and landslides damaged roads and bridges in several districts, forcing approximately 3,900 families to move to temporary shelters.

To reduce further risks, the BNPB initiated simultaneous weather modification operations in the three affected provinces to drive rain clouds away from high-risk areas. –0–

Hong Kong, November 28 (Xinhua) — The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) has established a task force to launch a comprehensive investigation into alleged corruption related to a major renovation project at the fire-damaged Hongfuyuan residential complex in Dabu County, Taipo, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) announced Friday.

The agency reported that on the same day it successively detained eight people involved in the project.

Seven men and one woman, aged between 40 and 63, were detained. Four of those detained are employees of the consulting firm overseeing the major renovation of the Hongfuyuan residential complex: two are board members of the company, and two are project managers responsible for overseeing the work. The other three detainees are subcontractors involved in scaffolding construction, including the married couple who own the company. The remaining detainee is a middleman.

On Friday, NCCB officers executed search warrants at 13 locations, including the offices of the consulting firm and its subcontractors, as well as the homes of those detained. Relevant design documents and bank records were seized.

Moscow, November 28 (Xinhua) – Russian-Hungarian relations are based on pragmatism and "the best of what has happened" in their history. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated this on Friday at a meeting in the Kremlin with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

“We are well aware that there have been different periods in our history, but today our relations are based on the best of what has happened and on pragmatism, on a pragmatic approach to the development of bilateral ties,” Vladimir Putin stated.

The Russian President noted Hungary's balanced position on the Ukrainian issue and praised the existing cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector.

"We have extensive cooperation in the energy sector, very good cooperation," the head of state noted. "And there are issues and problems here that require our discussion."

V. Orbán, for his part, noted Hungary’s interest in maintaining the energy dialogue.

“Hungary is interested in maintaining energy dialogue with your country,” the Prime Minister stated.

Earlier, V. Orbán stated that his main goal in the Moscow talks was "to continue to secure Hungary's energy supply." The prime minister recalled that his country maintains the lowest prices in Europe for fuel and raw materials for industry and households. "This is because we have access to cheap Russian oil and gas, whose prices are below international levels," he explained.

Moscow, November 28 (Xinhua) — A seminar entitled "Opening a New Chapter in China-Russia Cooperation and Jointly Proposing a New Vision for Global Governance" was held Thursday at the Chinese Embassy in Moscow. Leading Russian sinologists, scholars, and researchers discussed the prospects for cooperation between China and Russia in jointly advancing China's Global Governance Initiative.

Opening the seminar, Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui recalled that on September 1 of this year, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Governance Initiative at the SCO Plus meeting in Tianjin, a city in northern China. "This is another important international public good offered by China to the world in the new era. This initiative, along with the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative, brings much-needed stability and certainty to an unstable world," the diplomat noted, emphasizing that immediately after its launch, the initiative quickly gained the support of more than 140 countries and international organizations.

Andrei Denisov, First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs and former Russian Ambassador to China, pointed out that China is the only major country in the world to have put forward a series of major, interconnected strategic initiatives that are, on the one hand, conceptually coherent and, on the other, an invitation to further collaborative work. "The ideas they embody will define the ideological framework for human existence in the foreseeable future—until the end of the 21st century," he added.

Kirill Babaev, Director of the Institute of China and Modern Asia at the Russian Academy of Sciences, stated in his speech that today's Russian-Chinese relations represent a unique phenomenon in global politics—a steadily strengthening friendship and partnership between the two largest powers on the Eurasian continent. "Today, we see China actively building not only a new policy but even an ideology—a system of ideas for the future of all humanity. Xi Jinping's ideas are the foundation of today's Chinese policy, which is being laid not for a year or two, but for the coming decades," he noted.

The seminar participants concluded that it is necessary to study Xi Jinping's ideas as closely as possible in order to understand how China will develop and how to effectively and competently build relations between the countries. –0–
