Phnom Penh/Bangkok, December 7 (Xinhua) — Cambodia's Defense Ministry said Sunday that Thai troops opened fire on Cambodian positions, but that Cambodian troops did not return fire. That same day, the Thai military accused Cambodia of firing first, adding that Thailand was forced to retaliate.

Cambodian Ministry of Defense spokesperson Mali Socheata stated in a press release that at 2:15 PM local time, Thai armed forces launched an attack on Cambodian troops in the border area of Preah Vihear Province. While Cambodia did not retaliate, it immediately contacted the Thai side and called for an immediate ceasefire. The Thai armed forces reportedly ceased fire at 2:32 PM.

According to the press release, Cambodian forces are currently closely monitoring the situation, exercising maximum caution and vigilance. Cambodia has also informed the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Observer Mission of the incident and plans to request an investigation.

Thailand's Second Army Region announced on Sunday that Cambodian troops launched an attack on the Cambodia-Thailand border in Thailand's Sisaket Province at 2:16 PM local time, prompting Thai forces to respond in accordance with established rules of engagement. According to the Thai side, the clash ended at 2:50 PM, but border units remain on high alert due to concerns about a wider escalation.

According to Thai media, two Thai soldiers were wounded, one of whom received a gunshot wound to the leg and the other to the chest.

Thai government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat said Prime Minister Anuthin Chanvirakun is closely monitoring the situation at the border and has instructed the Ministry of Defense and the armed forces to take all necessary measures to protect national sovereignty and ensure public safety.

Addis Ababa, December 7 (Xinhua) — African Union (AU) Commission Chairman Mahamoud Ali Yusuf on Sunday "strongly and unequivocally" condemned the attempted military coup in Benin.

“Any form of military interference in political processes constitutes a grave violation of the fundamental principles and values of the African Union,” the head of the AU Commission emphasized in a press statement.

M.A. Yusuf called on all participants in the coup attempt to immediately cease all illegal actions, fully respect the country's constitution, and immediately return to their barracks and to their professional duties.

He also called on all stakeholders in Benin to prioritize unity, dialogue and maintaining peace in the country.

At the same time, the head of the AU Commission expressed "deep concern over the alarming spread of military coups and attempted coups in some parts of the region." He emphasized that such actions continue to undermine continental stability, threaten democratic achievements, and encourage the military to act beyond its constitutional authority.

According to M.A. Yusuf, the AU remains steadfast and consistent in defending democratic governance, the rule of law and the sovereign will of African peoples.

Damascus, December 7 (Xinhua) — An explosion was heard in the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday, eyewitnesses said.

According to local media, an acoustic bomb was detonated near the Freedom Bridge (formerly known as the Presidential Bridge) in the city center. There were no reports of damage or injuries.

The incident occurred amid preparations for events marking the first anniversary of the fall of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government.

Security measures have been tightened in Damascus and other cities across the country where large gatherings are taking place to mark the anniversary. On December 8, 2024, fighters from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and allied groups launched a lightning offensive, rapidly advancing from northern Syria, capturing the country's capital, and forcing Bashar al-Assad to flee to Russia.

Cotonou, December 7 (Xinhua) — Benin's armed forces have thwarted an attempted coup aimed at destabilizing the state and its institutions, Interior and Public Security Minister Alassane Seydou announced on Sunday.

A. Seydou made the statement after a group of military officers announced on state television channel Benin TV earlier in the day that the country's President Patrice Talon had been "suspended from office."

According to the minister, the armed forces and their command, "true to their oath," responded in a republican spirit and were able to keep the situation under control, preventing an attempt to seize power. The government called on the population to continue living and working as usual.

In an interview with the French-language weekly Jeune Afrique on Sunday morning, Benin's Minister of State for Economy and Finance, Romuald Wadagny, said the situation was "under control."

"The rebels are trapped. We're clearing the area, but it's not over yet. We're safe," said R. Wadagny, adding that helicopters are patrolling Cotonou and the central part of the city is under heavy army security.

In a telephone conversation with Xinhua, local residents said armed troops are stationed primarily at key intersections in and around Cotonou, the country's economic capital and largest city, while civilians continue to go about their daily business and large markets remain open.

BEIJING, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) — The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC Central Committee) released the revised Regulations of the Working Organs of the CPC.

According to the CPC Central Committee's circular, the revised document comprehensively embodies the spirit of the decisions of the 20th National Congress of the CPC and all past plenary sessions of the 20th CPC Central Committee.

As noted, the updated regulation consolidates the results achieved during the reform of China's party and state institutions, tightens political requirements for the party's working bodies, and standardizes the procedure for the establishment and functioning of these structures, which will contribute to increasing their effectiveness and potential to fulfill their responsibilities.

The circular requires party committees at all levels to strengthen their leadership in implementing the provisions in practice, and to carry out proper work on information, explanation, supervision, and verification, ensuring the effective implementation of all points of the updated document. –0–

GUIYANG, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) — Colorful Guizhou Airlines has launched a direct flight linking Guiyang, capital of southwest China's Guizhou Province, with Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam as part of China's expansion of air connectivity with ASEAN countries.

The direct Guiyang-Ho Chi Minh City flight began operating on December 6, according to the Guizhou Civil Aviation Corporation. Flight GY703 departed Guiyang at 10:50 PM Beijing time and arrived in Ho Chi Minh City at 1:30 AM local time. The return flight, GY704, departed at 2:30 AM local time and arrived in Guiyang at 7:10 AM Beijing time.

The new route will operate in parallel with the same carrier's Guiyang-Hanoi route, providing direct air service between the mountainous province of Guizhou and Vietnam's two largest cities.

Expanding air traffic will benefit trade, tourism and business ties between southwest China and ASEAN, officials believe.

In recent months, air traffic between China and ASEAN has expanded. In November, a passenger route connecting Haikou in southern China with Nha Trang in Vietnam was launched, and an all-cargo route connecting Nanjing in eastern China with Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia was also launched.

Trade and economic relations between China and ASEAN countries are demonstrating resilience. Since 2022, annual merchandise trade has remained above USD 900 billion, reaching a record USD 982.1 billion in 2024.

This growth trend continued in 2025: in the first 10 months of the year, trade turnover increased by 8.2 percent year-on-year. -0-

BEIJING, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) — China's Ministry of Emergency Management said Sunday it has sent a task force to northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to assist rescue efforts after traffic accidents killed nine people and injured seven others.

The accidents occurred on Saturday around 10:00 PM on different sections of the expressway, 70 km from the city limits of Wusu in Tacheng County. Five large vehicles and seven smaller cars were involved in the accidents.

Local authorities said the accidents occurred amid sudden heavy fog and sub-zero overnight temperatures, which caused the road surface to become wet and slippery due to icing over a short period of time.

The Ministry of Emergency Management of the People's Republic of China called for a scientific approach to organizing rescue operations to prevent recurrence of accidents, make every effort to provide assistance to victims, minimize losses, and determine the causes of the incident as soon as possible and draw appropriate conclusions. -0-
