Dakar, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) — The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Sunday condemned the attempted military coup in Benin and reaffirmed its support for the country's legitimate authorities.

In a statement released in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, ECOWAS expressed “horror” at the attempted rebellion and strongly condemned the unconstitutional actions, calling them an undermining of the will of the people of Benin.

The regional bloc called for full respect for the Constitution, praised the efforts of the government and the Republican army to bring the situation under control, and held the conspiracy leaders responsible for any human casualties or property damage.

ECOWAS said it would “support the Government and people of Benin by all means necessary, including the possible deployment of its regional reserve force, to defend the Constitution and the territorial integrity of the country.”

Early Sunday morning, a group of soldiers in Benin announced on state-run television station Benin TV that the country's president, Patrice Talon, had been "removed from office" months before presidential elections scheduled for April 2026.

Hours after the coup attempt was announced, Benin's Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Alassane Seydou, said in a statement that the armed forces had thwarted a rebellion aimed at destabilizing the state and its institutions.

Chengdu, December 8 (Xinhua) — Paleontologists have discovered more than 20 dinosaur and other vertebrate footprints on a rock face in southwest China's Sichuan Province. They say the discovery sheds new light on the early evolution of dinosaurs around 200 million years ago.

The tracks were discovered in the city of Dujiangyan by a nature enthusiast last month, and their authenticity was later confirmed by a research team led by Xing Lida, an associate professor at the China University of Geosciences (Beijing). This is the first time dinosaur tracks have been discovered in Dujiangyan.

Xing Lida said the prints include theropod tracks of varying sizes left by carnivorous dinosaurs, as well as human-hand-like tracks attributed to early archosaur reptiles.

"What makes this discovery particularly valuable is that at least four layers of the fossils contain preserved tracks. This suggests that dinosaurs lived here for a long time," explained Xing Lida.

Researchers also found fossilized tree pieces near these footprints, including fallen logs and upright stumps, which provided new information about the local ecosystem more than 200 million years ago.

Jiang Shan, a researcher at the Zigong Dinosaur Museum in Sichuan Province, said the discovered tracks could help scientists better understand the early evolutionary history of dinosaurs in China. -0-

Phnom Penh/Bangkok, December 7 (Xinhua) — Cambodia's Defense Ministry said Sunday that Thai troops opened fire on Cambodian positions, but that Cambodian troops did not return fire. That same day, the Thai military accused Cambodia of firing first, adding that Thailand was forced to retaliate.

Cambodian Ministry of Defense spokesperson Mali Socheata stated in a press release that at 2:15 PM local time, Thai armed forces launched an attack on Cambodian troops in the border area of Preah Vihear Province. While Cambodia did not retaliate, it immediately contacted the Thai side and called for an immediate ceasefire. The Thai armed forces reportedly ceased fire at 2:32 PM.

According to the press release, Cambodian forces are currently closely monitoring the situation, exercising maximum caution and vigilance. Cambodia has also informed the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Observer Mission of the incident and plans to request an investigation.

Thailand's Second Army Region announced on Sunday that Cambodian troops launched an attack on the Cambodia-Thailand border in Thailand's Sisaket Province at 2:16 PM local time, prompting Thai forces to respond in accordance with established rules of engagement. According to the Thai side, the clash ended at 2:50 PM, but border units remain on high alert due to concerns about a wider escalation.

According to Thai media, two Thai soldiers were wounded, one of whom received a gunshot wound to the leg and the other to the chest.

Thai government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat said Prime Minister Anuthin Chanvirakun is closely monitoring the situation at the border and has instructed the Ministry of Defense and the armed forces to take all necessary measures to protect national sovereignty and ensure public safety.

Addis Ababa, December 7 (Xinhua) — African Union (AU) Commission Chairman Mahamoud Ali Yusuf on Sunday "strongly and unequivocally" condemned the attempted military coup in Benin.

“Any form of military interference in political processes constitutes a grave violation of the fundamental principles and values of the African Union,” the head of the AU Commission emphasized in a press statement.

M.A. Yusuf called on all participants in the coup attempt to immediately cease all illegal actions, fully respect the country's constitution, and immediately return to their barracks and to their professional duties.

He also called on all stakeholders in Benin to prioritize unity, dialogue and maintaining peace in the country.

At the same time, the head of the AU Commission expressed "deep concern over the alarming spread of military coups and attempted coups in some parts of the region." He emphasized that such actions continue to undermine continental stability, threaten democratic achievements, and encourage the military to act beyond its constitutional authority.

According to M.A. Yusuf, the AU remains steadfast and consistent in defending democratic governance, the rule of law and the sovereign will of African peoples.

Damascus, December 7 (Xinhua) — An explosion was heard in the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday, eyewitnesses said.

According to local media, an acoustic bomb was detonated near the Freedom Bridge (formerly known as the Presidential Bridge) in the city center. There were no reports of damage or injuries.

The incident occurred amid preparations for events marking the first anniversary of the fall of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government.

Security measures have been tightened in Damascus and other cities across the country where large gatherings are taking place to mark the anniversary. On December 8, 2024, fighters from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and allied groups launched a lightning offensive, rapidly advancing from northern Syria, capturing the country's capital, and forcing Bashar al-Assad to flee to Russia.
