Beijing, December 9 (Xinhua) — China and Germany should shoulder their responsibilities as major powers, adhere to the principle of mutual respect, and overcome differences in social systems, history, and culture to create a more mature model of positive interaction and a more stable bilateral political framework, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in Beijing on Monday.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, told German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul that he hoped that Germany would regard China's development as an opportunity to deepen cooperation and a driving force for achieving mutual benefit and win-win results, and would work with China to promote the stable and healthy development of the China-Germany comprehensive strategic partnership.
The Chinese Foreign Minister called on Germany to encourage the European Union to return to a rational and pragmatic policy toward China, adhere to the correct vector of mutually beneficial cooperation, resolve differences through dialogue, avoid politicizing economic issues, instrumentalizing trade issues, and securitizing normal cooperation.
Wang Yi emphasized that the one-China principle is an important political foundation of Sino-German relations and does not allow for any ambiguity, and also noted that Japan, unlike Germany, has still not carried out a profound rethinking of its history of aggression in the eight decades since the end of World War II.
As J. Wadephul pointed out, in the current turbulent international climate, Germany and China must assume a special responsibility, strengthen communication and cooperation, and become reliable and predictable partners for each other.
He assured that Germany firmly adheres to the one-China policy and this position remains unchanged.
German companies operating in China have full confidence in the Chinese market and are ready to further deepen their presence there, said J. Wadephul, adding that Germany supports the EU and China in seeking mutual benefit and win-win results through dialogue and is ready to play a constructive role in this regard.
The parties also exchanged views on the Ukrainian crisis. J. Wadephul outlined Germany's position and expressed hope that China would use its influence to help bring the crisis to a swift end.
Wang Yi reiterated China's consistent position, stressing that all parties should cherish the current favorable momentum for a political settlement of the crisis, move towards each other, and ultimately reach a fair, lasting and binding peace agreement through dialogue and negotiations.
China supports all efforts to promote peace and will continue to play a constructive role in this regard, the Chinese diplomat added.
